Chapter 166
Jasper finally woke up the next day in the afternoon. He repeatedly dreamed of the same scene.
Years ago, he was dispatched on a tough mission on the Luminara battlefield. Fifty of them had to sneak into the enemy's territory to kill the terrorists and save the ten hostages.
The youthful but vile abductors each held an assault rifle. They had been killing since they were five years old. The place was a hell on earth with endless bloodshed.
Jasper had not been assigned to the mission at first. He requested to be sent on the mission, which was how he came to be part of the suicide squad.
"Young man, are you married?"
"No."
"Why would you join the mission if you're single without kids? We are all married with children. If something happened to us, at least we left behind a legacy."
He merely smiled at them with a fearless attitude toward death. "I'm fearless exactly because I have nothing worth losing."
At that time, the two most important women in his life had left him, one after another. As he was already dead inside, he was undaunted by the idea of physical death. In fact, he feared the debilitating loneliness more than death.
He and the forty-nine teammates fought hard for their mission. Only ten survived in the end. He suffered from gunshot and stab wounds on his legs, shoulders, and waist.
Just as he thought he was about to perish in Luminara, a woman in a white coat showed up and gave her best to save his life.
In his memory, she had short hair and wore a thick face mask. Her coat was stained and dirty. She looked like a fallen angel, except for her sparkling eyes, which rivaled the radiance of the sun and moon.
The woman was his savior, Dove, whom he had been searching for years. To his surprise, Dove showed up in his dreams after he met with Alice last night. They were two different people, but he saw Dove in Alice, which was unbelievable.
He rubbed his temples tiredly and was surprised that his headache had disappeared.
At that moment, Mrs. Rosie walked in with a box of pills. She was overjoyed to find Jasper awake and looking better. "Mr. Jasper, you're up! How do you feel today?"
"I'm feeling alright..." He sat up in the bed and was shocked to find himself in pajamas. "How did I get into the pajamas?"
"You came home drenched from head to toe last night. I helped you put on some fresh clothes!" She continued nagging at him while cleaning his room, "You're almost in your thirties. Why can't you take better care of yourself? That's why you need a wife ..."
Frowning, he grabbed his hair in irritation. He recalled suffering from a massive headache and searching for his pills in the study. He couldn't remember anything that happened after that.
"Mrs. Rosie, did you help me change?"
"Who else? Yes, it was me, the old lady."
He put a hand on his forehead with shame. "I'm nearing thirty. I'm no longer a thirteen-year-old. Can you stop taking off my clothes for me, please?"
"Wow, are you complaining because you think I took advantage of you? I'm at your mom's age!" She started roasting him, "Did you think I enjoy helping you change? It was exhausting because you
were freaking heavy. I've seen every nook and cranny of your body as I raised you. There's nothing to see!"
He was rendered speechless.
"It's your fault for driving out your wife. You have no one to blame but yourself now that there's no one to love you! One day, when I'm gone, you'll revert to a caveman's lifestyle, I tell you. Nobody's going to tell you off for roaming around naked. I bet you'll feel happy then!
His temper receded in the face of Mrs. Rosie's endless nagging. "Move fast. Take off your shirt!"
"What are you doing again?" He flinched and inched backward.
"Applying cream to the wound on your back. You have to apply it consistently for it to work. Quick, take off your shirt now!" Holding Alice's cream in one hand, Mrs. Rosie urged Jasper with a stern voice.
He set his sharp gaze on Mrs. Rosie. "How do you know my back's injured?"
"That's because..."
