Can’t Win Me Back by Ginger Sue

Chapter 728

"Well, I just thought you might not be able to save me. I mean, you won't be rescuing a damsel in distress. You'll just be adding to my troubles," Alyssa made up an excuse.

She added, "Jasper has a different physique. He's stronger than the average guy. He stands a better chance of surviving the surgery. I might not have been successful in saving you if you were injured, and I'd be burdened with guilt for the rest of my life."

Jameson frowned, his heart sinking.

"Oh, by the way, welcome to Belbanks! Can I treat you to dinner tonight?" Alyssa extended an invitation with a smile, not wanting his trip to Belbanks to be in vain.

"Lyse, come with me to Solana City. We'll have dinner there," he said, his eyes suddenly brightening. "I'll also bring you to a place you'll love."

After some consideration, she nodded. She wasn't particularly keen on the place Jameson had in mind. In fact, she planned to return to Solana City to meet with Cyrus as they were investigating the assailant behind the attack on Lyla.

Since Alyssa insisted on treating Jameson to dinner, he accepted the offer and took her to the restaurant where they had first dined.

The atmosphere was light and cheerful, but Alyssa appeared troubled due to the issues on her mind.

"Have you not resolved Madam Lyla's issue?" Jameson wondered with concern as he took a sip of tea.

"The attacker is still at the police station. He confessed to the crime, "she replied in a low voice, gripping her cup indignantly.

"Does the police know where to look into?"

His sudden question gave her an idea, and she asked, "Judging from your question, I wonder if you have any thoughts on this."

He smiled and quickly tapped on his phone.

A notification sounded on her phone. Jameson had sent her photos of the attacker and his background.

Jameson explained while pouring her some tea, "This guy used to work on-site for TS Network 20 years ago. He later became a stuntman. But a few years ago, he suffered a left leg fracture in a filming incident and left the network.

"He received medical treatment for his leg, allowing him to lead a normal life, but he could no longer work as a stuntman. Over the years, he has been living in poverty."

Alyssa recalled the odd limp of the attacker when he was placed into the police car.

Jameson continued, "Back then, Madam Lyla and Jasper's stepmother, Mrs. Beckett, were popular actresses and rivals under TS Network. There were rumors of their rivalry in the past."

"Madam Beckett deliberately scheduled her birthday on the same day as Madam Lyla's just to compete for attention. She was disappointed when the guests she invited chose to attend the other event.

"Even Mr. Newton Beckett humiliated her on the spot," Jameson recounted with amusement. "Do you think she might have orchestrated the attack on Madam Lyla out of resentment?"

Alyssa pressed her lips and took a deep breath. "Honestly, I suspected Sophia Kirkman was behind the attack when it happened, but I lacked concrete evidence pointing to her."

He squinted and texted her a few photos.

"What are these?" she exclaimed.

"These are photos of the apartment the attacker rented," he explained. The photos depicted a dark, cramped, and filthy space. On the old-looking walls, the attacker had plastered posters and photos from Sophia Kirkman's heydays, turning the place into an eerie crime scene only seen in movies.

"That man has been obsessively in love with Sophia Kirkman, which establishes a motive. Lyse, do you think this counts as circumstantial evidence?"

Alyssa's eyes widened in shock. "Did you send someone to his place?"

He dabbed his lips with the napkin and replied, "It was no big deal. You don't have to thank me."

She was touched by his effort but reminded him, "Trespassing is against the law, though."

He beamed at her and argued, "Those who have hurt you and your family do not deserve their civil rights. They're animals."
