“Ye Lin, if you want to change your fate, then you should listen to my warning…”
Fang Xin looked at me with eyes that could see through everything and it made my skin itch.
“If you have my help, then you could protect the one you love the most while also being able to turn the tide in an unfavorable situation…”
Huh, it sounds like Fang Xin wants to help me deal with Ai ShuQiao! How exactly did he know about the class leader’s text message and my relationship with Ai ShuQiao? Does he really have supernatural abilities?
No, my dad is a space physics instructor. My family subscribes to monthly copies of Scientific American, so we’ve already become Scientific Chinese. We’re a scientific family and we can’t believe in this mumbo-jumbo nonsense. Fang Xin must have used some sort of trick.
As I was thinking about how to find out what tricks he used, two people walked over from the end of the carriage. It was the two male nurses from the psychiatric hospital who came before to catch Fang Xin.
“So the Fang lunatic ran over here.” One of the male nurses said, “You’ve been vanishing a lot lately and all of the guards have been calling you a master.”
“Hurry up and come with us, you haven’t taken your meds since this morning. If you run away again, we’ll have to let the manager reduce your visiting hours.”
Fang Xin sighed as if he expected the two nurses to arrive.
“The people of this era are so rough…”
It was the same as last time. Fang Xin looked calm and didn’t resist as the two male nurses held onto him. He was dragged off once the subway reached the station and aroused a wave of discussion among the passengers who just boarded.
“Ye Lin, hurry up and come or you will lose the chance to change your fate forever…”
The passengers were all concerned when they saw a mental patient talk to me. They might have thought we became friends at the hospital, so they all kept their distance from me.
I wasn’t able to come up with a reasonable explanation even when the day came to an end.
Fang Xin was able to call me by my name the first time we met, but it doesn’t really prove anything with how advanced online searches are nowadays.
As for Ai ShuQiao and Ai Mi, it’s not like it’s impossible to find out about it. Su Qiao knows about it, Dr. Yu knows about it, the past head of Tian Mu Xing Guang Media company, Fu ShiJian also knows about it…
I even suspected Fang Xin was someone Ai ShuQiao sent to distract me, but I didn’t understand why he would want to help me deal with Ai ShuQiao.
The hardest part to explain was how Fang Xin knew about the message the class leader sent me and its contents.
Actually, I couldn’t be a hundred percent certain if what Fang Xin said about the message was true or not.
The best way was to confirm with the class leader to see if it was true, so I wouldn’t be tricked by Fang Xin.
I took out my phone and was about to call the class leader, but I hesitated.
What should I say? Should I say I already know the contents of the text message, then ask: “Class leader, didn’t you say that you will marry me if I come back alive. You’ve let me down by not keeping your word.”
First, that might not have been the message. If Fang Xin tricked me, then the class leader would despise me more and it would be humiliating.
Second, the class leader quickly deleted the message because she regretted sending it. If she agreed to marry me in a text message when she lost control of her emotions, that means it wasn’t a rational decision.
Nowadays, there are many people who get engaged and then break it off. I can’t make the class leader take responsibility simply over a text message.
Third, I decided to wait a bit and see.
Fang Xin was right. The most important matter at hand was to free Ai Mi from Ai ShuQiao’s control. In order to achieve that, I would have to cure my heart problems now.
The next morning at 9:00 a.m., I went to the VIP building as scheduled, to receive a routine medical examination from Dr. Yu. I also wanted to see if there were any promising results from the mice that were treated with alcohol.
When I walked into the infirmary, Dr. Yu was staring at the three cages of mice on the lab table while holding his chin in a puzzled manner.
“Dr. Yu, are you on a blind date?” I joked, “Did the experiment fail and alcohol wasn’t able to cure it?”
These white mice were injected with my blood so they would have the same heart problems as me. Dr. Yu’s colleague said drinking alcohol could cure it. Luckily, I didn’t test it on myself and made Dr. Yu test it on mice first.
Dr. Yu’s hair was messy and it looked like he hasn’t shaved in a couple of day. He only just noticed me come in.
“Hey, Ye Lin, when did you arrive? Since you’re here, take a look at these mice with me, it’s interesting…”
The white mice were divided into three cages. There were five mice in each cage. Other than its nose, paws, and tail being pink, the rest of its body was as white as the doctor’s coat.
Dr. Yu introduced: “Cage A is the treatment group. They were the ones treated with alcohol after contracting the disease. Cage B is the control group. They were not treated at all after contracting the disease. Cage C is normal mice I frighten as a comparison.”
“What do you mean frighten as a comparison?”
Dr. Yu shifted his Google glasses, “The main symptom of your heart disease is speeding up your heart rate. The best way to trigger the same problem in the mice is to scare them.”
“Oh.” I nodded, “So the mice in cage C are used to measure how much they get frightened. If they get scared to death, then it means the mice in cage A or B didn’t necessarily die because of the heart disease.”
“That’s right. At first I used cats to scare them, but it wasn’t effective. Since these mice were raised in a closed environment, they might not recognize cats…”
“What about dogs? How about Obama?” I suggested, “I heard some dogs like to catch rats.”
Dr. Yu’s lips curled into a bitter smile as if he wanted to say ‘forget it’.
“Obama doesn’t even bark at these mice and even tries to lick them through the cage. If I didn’t stop it, they would have already become best friends.”
“These mice sound really brave. If they aren’t even afraid of cats and dogs, are we going to have to use tigers?”
“We don’t need tigers.” Dr. Yu shrugged, “We can use mice.”
“Huh, will white mice be afraid of regular house mice?”
“Not house mice, we use other white mice…” Dr. Yu smiled and made a chopping motion with his hands.
So we’re going to kill mice and let the other mice see? The other mice will definitely be scared if they see another white mouse get executed in front of them.
“So is the alcohol treatment effective or not?”
“It’s strange.” Dr. Yu frowned again.
“How is it strange? Hurry up and tell me.” contemporary romance
Dr. Yu pointed to the treatment group in cage A. Among the five mice, two were always in a daze and stumble around. Sometimes they would even stand on their two hind feet as if they were drunk and were about to practice the drunken fist.
“Those two mice have been completely cured, but their brains were also irreparably damaged by the alcohol. Basically, they have brain damage and they are morons…”
What kind of treatment is this? I would rather have heart problems than have brain damage!
I noticed the other three mice were fine.
“Dr. Yu, did those three drink less? Have they been cured?”
“They drank the same amount as the other two.” Dr. Yu said, “But their alcohol tolerance is a bit higher.”
“They aren’t completely cured, but it’s at a level where it wouldn’t damage their heart anymore.” Dr. Yu was still frowning, “The tests show alcohol is effective, but…”
“But what?” I suddenly became optimistic, “Even if you get brain damage from drinking too much, but it seems like it’s a hundred percent effective! If we keep experimenting, we should be able to find the correct dosage.”
Dr. Yu hesitated and didn’t say anything.
I pointed to cages B and C, “Also, none of these mice have died, so that means the disease isn’t that bad. None of the mice in cage C died from fright either, so maybe it’s because you weren’t cruel enough? Or maybe these mice are all apathetic…”
Dr. Yu finally responded, “No, my execution methods were quite cruel, I’ve even done ones where I pulled their spine straight out. The ones you see here are all the ones who were lucky to survive. The number of mice who were scared to the point of having a heart attack or simply being scared to death amount to over 10 times the current population.”
I was speechless. If the radical animal protectionists found out about Dr. Yu’s cruel experimentation, then would they burn the VIP building down?
“Then… what’s the treatment success rate? Also, what’s the death rate for the ones who were scared and didn’t get any treatments?”
Dr. Yu frowned, “Does having brain damage count as being cured?”
“Of course not, I don’t want Ai Mi to have a brother with brain damage. I don’t want to become an idiot she raises on the balcony.”
“If you don’t include ones with brain damage, then the success rate is only 15%. If you include the ones with brain damage, then the success rate reaches as high as 80%.”
How is this treatment with alcohol? It’s more like treatment with brain damage. Dr. Yu, tell your colleague to come to China and I’m going to bite him to death if he comes.
“Ye Lin, that’s not even the strangest part. Come see this video, in the course of the experiment, there were four mice who appeared to have abnormal hyperactivity, similar to when you take certain drugs…”
