- Chapter 362 - I Am Not Worthy of Maverick
The corridor of the hospital was darker than the outside because of its length and dim light. The white light hanging from the ceiling appeared cool. The red light on the door of the emergency room was on. The glaring color was particularly conspicuous. People easily associated it with something inauspicious.
The elevator door opened. And someone rushed to Everly and Gloria with hurried footsteps.
Everly’s arms were around Gloria and she raised her head. Hendrix had reached them. A black shadow enveloped them like a mountain. “What’s going on?”
Everly had been strong enough to comfort her mother. However, when Everly saw her brother, she suddenly surrendered. Her eyes almost immediately turned red at a speed visible to the naked eye. Her nose turned sour. She just said, “Hendrix.” And tears rolled down her cheeks.
She was going to be scared to death. Fortunately, Hendrix was here.
Just now, Hendrix was about to take a plane to go on a business trip. But he did not expect to receive such an emergency call when he was waiting for the plane. He was only told that Parrish had a heart attack and it seemed to be very dangerous. He immediately rushed back and drove through a red light on the road.
He was afraid that if he missed a moment, it would lead to regret for the rest of his life.
Parrish had already had a heart attack this year. The doctor had warned others to take good care of Parrish. Parrish would also pay attention to his condition. So Hendrix could not understand why Parrish had a heart attack, especially when Everly and his mother were present.
“Why did he have a heart attack again?” Hendrix could not understand.
“It was my fault.”
Everly covered her face in pain. By saying these words, she had exhausted all her strength. She fell down as if she couldn’t hold on any longer. She folded herself up and pressed her cheeks against her knees as if she would be able to relax a little.
It was too heavy for her to bear such a sudden change.
If something happened to Parrish, Everly would probably never forgive herself.
Tears flowed down between Everly’s fingers and fell to the ground drop by drop, shattering Hendrix’s mind.
Hendrix sighed heavily, with a hint of helplessness. He subconsciously took a step back and patted Everly on the shoulder.
Now all of this was not important, and the key was that Parrish could safely go through it.
The red light on the door of the emergency room seemed to be a little fire, igniting the flame of hope.
Four hours later, Parrish was pushed out of the emergency room and turned into the intensive care unit. The others could not relax for a moment.
The doctor was Parrish’s acquaintance and was the most famous expert in this field in the hospital. He was not optimistic to inform them, “It depends on the next 24 hours. If Parrish’s vital signs are stable, he will be fine.”
Gloria’s body swayed. When the others thought that she would fall, she stood steadily again and asked for a guarantee with a trembling voice, “Doctor, Parrish will be fine, right?”
It depended on the patient himself. All the doctors could do was to do their best and leave the rest to heaven. Now that they had done everything they could do, it was up to the will of heaven.
The doctor could not give the patient any assurance, even if it was false hope. He just said realistically, “We will know the result after 24 hours.”
Hendrix was now the mainstay of the family. He made a final decision and said, “Blessed are good people. Parrish will be fine. Doctor, thank you for your hard work.”
The doctor was also tired. Even if Gloria asked again, she would not get any other answers. It was useless. Hendrix directly ended the chat.
Hendrix asked his assistant to buy something for dinner. He made several phone calls in the corridor. When he turned back, he found that the dishes were all there and no one had them.
Gloria didn’t feel like eating, and Everly also had no appetite. After such an urgent thing, the two women seemed to have lost their backbone and the function of their other senses.
Hendrix did not force them and just sat down opposite them.
Up until now, Maverick hadn’t even appeared. Hendrix quietly glanced at the watch on his wrist. He quietly lowered his eyes and nobody could see his true emotions.
Gloria suddenly thought of something and bounced up as if she had been shocked by electricity. “Everly, is anyone going to pick up Edmond?”
She remembered that Everly had said that the child had been taken to swim by the teacher.
They had been paying all the attention to Parrish and had forgotten the child.
“Someone should pick him up. The bodyguards and the teacher will send him home.”
“Did you call and ask?”
“No. I’ll make a call.”
Everly picked up the phone and walked out of the lounge. She reached the end of the corridor and stopped by the window. She had been sitting just now and did not feel it. Now she moved, and she felt too weak all over to lift her hand.
Everly directly called Edmond’s phone. Edmond asked her why she was not home. The crisp voice of a child was undoubtedly the only comfort today. Everly wiped the corner of her eyes that began to turn damp again. She tried to steady her breathing and said, “Be good. Have a good sleep. I have something to do and will go back later.”
“Mom, are you alright?” Edmond was quite sharp. But he was a child after all, and Everly was confident of deceiving him.
“It’s OK.”
Everly said a few words before hanging up the phone. She stood by the window for a while. She didn’t turn around until she calmed down. However, she did not expect Hendrix to stand behind her.
Everly was shocked. She took a big step back and looked at Hendrix resentfully. “Why did you move like a cat? Hendrix, don’t you know that people can be scared to death?”
With one hand in the pocket, Hendrix was calm but sharp. “You didn’t hear my footsteps. Everly, I didn’t scare you by lowering my footsteps.”
Everly was obviously distracted. She had something hidden in her mind.
“Don’t go. Someone is accompanying our mom. I will ask you some questions.” Hendrix did not like to oppress his younger sister as an elder brother. On the contrary, he doted on Everly. But once he became serious, Everly was somewhat afraid of him.
Everly had just taken a step forward but took it back. She stood with her legs closed and her hands clasped together. She might not have realized that she looked like a primary school student ready to be scolded.
Hendrix looked at her nervous appearance and had a headache. “It’s OK. I just want to understand the situation.”
Everly did not want to mention it, mainly because she could not say it. At that time, she was present but did not notice that her father’s condition was bad. She even put all of this on herself. All her negative emotions wrapped her tightly. She was unwilling to say anything.
“You… Ask Mommy,” she said, looking sideways.
“If Mom hadn’t refused to tell me, I would not have asked you. Do you think I didn’t ask her? I have the right to know the situation because the person lying inside is also my father,” Hendrix said, stressing each word. He was suppressing his emotions.
Everly let out a deep breath and told Hendrix everything.
Hendrix’s face turned even darker. When he heard the last part, he turned angry. “To be honest, our family doesn’t owe her anything. Back then, when Parrish drove for her family, did he not contribute any labor? Could it be that he was a freeloader in the Waller family? Did he have an obligation to save her? She failed to recognize people and deserved it. In the end, she suffered that kind of thing. Did our family cause it? She just took advantage of Parrish because he had a conscience. How could she do it?”
Everly listened to him all the way and did not dare to say a word. Although she did not agree with something, she agreed with the last sentence.
There was no reconciliation. Kailey was taking revenge on Parrish and Everly.
“She doesn’t like me because she thinks that I am not worthy of Maverick. If it weren’t for me, she might not have humiliated Parrish. I shouldn’t have hesitated then.” The more Everly thought about it, the more she felt sad. Everly buried her head deeply and cried silently. “Dad, you must be fine! Or I will be a sinner.”
