They were shocked and then looked at each other. But before they could react, an even louder sound was heard, accompanied by the sound of something being smashed.
What was going on?
“Let’s go take a look.”
Most of the houses in this neighborhood were constructed by the Malone Group. According to the industry regulations, though the houses were decorated and residents had moved in without any complaint, occasionally, people from the Marketing Department would send people over to pay a visit to ensure the safety of the neighborhood.
When they heard that someone was arguing, they didn’t ignore it and ran over.
As Reyna approached the door to the house, the female voice became even more ear-piercing, “Stay away from me! I don’t want to live anymore! Why are you all forcing me? Why?”
Through the windows, they could vaguely see the situation inside. A middle-aged woman was sitting by the window, holding a knife in her hand. She was shouting emotionally at a man with the knife aimed at him.
When Reyna saw that the situation was not good, people from the property came up. A few people kept knocking on the door and tried to calm the woman down.
“Stay away! I told you to stay away!” The woman was still hysterical. Her eyes were filled with hatred as she stared at the man beside her.
The man beside her was worried that she would jump. He kept persuading her, “Please come down. Let’s have a talk. I was impulsive back then. I promise that I won’t do this again. Please come down.”
Although the man seemed to be appeasing the woman, his tone was somewhat commanding and it carried a hint of threat.
However, not only did the woman not stop, but she became even more hysterical. She waved the knife in her hand as if she was going all out, “Sawyer, how many times have you hit me? Look at me…”
As she spoke, she rolled up her sleeves, lifted her trousers and collar, revealing shocking bruises on her calves, arms, and neck. Everyone present was appalled.
“Every time you hit me, I want to die, but I can’t, because I have a child … You always said you would change, but you would forget about it soon after. I’ve been with you for so many years, and my life is worth than death…” The hatred in her eyes grew stronger. “Our child is at school, and it’s a good opportunity to end this.”
She got off from the window and ran into the kitchen. She still waved the knife in her hand at the crowd, and no one dared to step forward.
“Even if I’ll die, I will have you die with me!”
With that, she detonated the gas tank amidst everyone’s shock.
With a loud bang, a powerful force was released from the narrow kitchen. The few people at the entrance were knocked to the ground by the force. The raging fire began to spread in all directions, and the flames went towards the lobby with heavy smoke.
The screams of fear and the cry of the women made this place purgatory.
The landlord and the people from the property had rushed to the door when they noticed that something was wrong.
“Let’s go!” Mikaela took Reyna’s hand and ran towards the door.
However, the fire was getting bigger and bigger, and the smoke was overwhelming. Reyna was so choked that she was breathless.
Reyna staggered and fell to the ground with a bang. She began to tremble violently from fear.
The fire was like a poisonous snake sticking its tongue out as it approached her.
“Reyna, hug me tightly. We are leaving!”
“Cover your mouth, don’t let go! Someone will come to save us. Reyna, you must hold on…”
“Don’t be afraid, Reyna … I’m here…”
“Reyna, promise me that you will live, okay?”
Dereon’s back had been burned by the fire. The smell of blood and the odor of charred human skin filled Reyna’s nose.
However, he still gave her the only piece of wet cloth and hugged her tightly to prevent the flames from burning.
She felt as if someone was strangling her. It was sick, painful, and desperate.
Excruciating and hopeless scenes kept surfacing in her mind. She hugged her head with both hands and let out a painful roar as she could not suppress the splitting headache.
She felt like she was about to die. She could no longer distinguish between reality and illusions where a worried voice kept calling out her name.
Was that Bentley?
No … it was a female voice, who was it?
The fire grew bigger and bigger. At this moment, the firemen arrived. They broke the door and filed in. Holding the tools, they instantly disappeared in the thick smoke.
“Reyna?!”
Bentley soaked his clothes and rushed in, ignoring the danger. He covered her with the wet clothes and picked the fainted Reyna up. He quickly turned around and ran out of the danger zone.
“Reyna? Reyna, wake up!” Bentley put her down and kept calling her and pinching her philtrum while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
After calling her for more than a minute, Reyna woke up.
When she opened her eyes, she saw a familiar face in her blurred vision. And when her vision got clear, she saw that it was Bentley.
“Bentley? Is it really you?” She took in some smoke, so her voice became hoarse and weak.
Bentley pulled her into his embrace. The feeling of losing and regaining made him gradually tighten his hands. “It’s me, Reyna, it’s me.”
Tears welled up in her eyes as she hugged him tightly, “Bentley, it’s really you. You’re fine … I thought I was dreaming. I had a long, long dream about what happened two years ago.”
It was true. Bentley was still alive. He survived that fire.
“Don’t be afraid, I’m back.”
…
Although Reyna had woken up, she took in a lot of smoke and was sent to the hospital.
But Bentley did not follow.
Reyna woke up again in the hospital and unexpectedly saw Leroy by her side.
He was peeling an apple with a knife.
Reyna was stunned. Normally, Leroy would be condescending and unruly. This was the first time she had seen him do such a trivial thing as peeling an apple.
