Just as Leroy was hesitant, the dishes were served. The smell of stinky tofu greeted him and Reyna. While he could hardly stand anymore, the latter was delighted.
Leroy walked to the table after staring at her satisfied expression for a while. Then, he cleaned a chair with napkins and sat down.
“Aren’t you hungry?” Reyna pushed the barbecue toward him and said, “Why don’t you eat? It tastes good.”
Reyna wished she could have a big appetite.
Leroy’s gaze fell on the black barbecue in front of him. He closed his eyes and tried hard to stop himself from leaving immediately.
“I’m not hungry. Don’t mind me.”
“Didn’t you say you are hungry?” Reyna looked up at him and finally saw his pained expression.
It seemed that he indeed didn’t want to eat.
It made sense. Leroy was born noble and probably had never eaten junk food like this. He grew up eating healthy and nutritious food, and most of them was imported. No wonder he didn’t want to eat here.
“I’m not hungry now.”
“Alright.” Reyna didn’t force him and began to eat.
Leroy sat up straight and put his hands on his laps. He worked hard not to touch the table. Looking at Reyna’s contented face, he was puzzled and asked, “Is it delicious?”
Reyna passed him a barbecue and said, “Have a try?”
“No.”
Reyna pulled her hand back and continued to eat.
Leroy asked, “Do you often come here?”
How she made her way through the crowd and came to the stall occurred to him. Obviously, she was familiar with the stall and came here frequently.
Reyna stopped eating for a moment. Then, she half-closed her eyes and hid her sadness from him. She forced a smile and replied, “It’s not far away from my university. When I was at school, I often came here to eat.”
At that time, she was still in love with Bentley. They were regular customers in the stall. With their favorite dishes and cold beers, they spent a few hours staying with each other. Back then, she felt like she was the happiest person…
As long as she was with him, she didn’t mind it was a messy stall.
Leroy looked at her and didn’t say anything else.
After eating for a while, Reyna found that Leroy was in a good mood. So, she asked him, “Leroy, can I … go home tonight? My younger brother will come back.”
Reyna asked cautiously and was afraid to offend him.
He probably wouldn’t agree, but she wanted to give it a try.
She hadn’t told Lance about her moving to the Imperial Garden. Fortunately, she went to the Imperial Garden with a few things. Lance hadn’t discovered it yet.
Lance was at school and couldn’t go to her home frequently. What was more, since she lived in the Imperial Garden, she had even fewer opportunities to meet him. When she missed him, she could only have a chat video with him.
“Yes.”
Reyna did not expect that Leroy would agree.
Reyna was happy and couldn’t help but have a better appetite.
Leroy remained silent and stared at her. Rarely, they didn’t have quarrels. Instead, they sat together and ate, enjoying the time quietly.
However, Leroy didn’t know that it was the last time he could stay with Reyna in peace.
As Leroy had agreed, Reyna was glad and ate much faster. She finished the meal within three minutes and stood up, saying, “I’m leaving.”
Leroy also stood up and said, “I’ll send you back.”
“No need. It’s not late. I can take a taxi and go home by myself.”
Reyna waved her hand at him as a goodbye. Then, she turned around and was quickly swallowed up by the crowd.
Leroy knew she was happy as Reyna had never said goodbye to him in such a cheerful manner.
It was also the first time she put on such a beaming smile in front of him.
At her twenty-two, Reyna was in fact an innocent girl. It was because of harsh reality and heavy pressure, she had to become mature.
Leroy didn’t know it was also the last time she showed her innocence to him. Moreover, it was him who at last plunged her into darkness.
…
Reyna returned to where she lived at past eight o’clock. Surprisingly, she saw Bentley rather than Lance.
With his back leaning against the rough wall and his left leg curling up, Bentley put one hand in his pocket and held a cigarette with another. As he smoked, the fire flickered in the darkness and Reyna could saw his face from time to time.
“Bentley?” Reyna was shocked. Her voice echoed in the corridor.
Bentley stopped smoking and looked up at her.
When Reyna went upstairs and was about to speak, Bentley pulled her into his arms.
Reyna was dumbfounded and didn’t know what she should do.
“Reyna, I miss you so much.”
Reyna felt bitter at his words. Without a word, she threw her arms around his waist.
She missed him too.
Reyna opened the door and asked him to sit down. Since he hadn’t eaten yet, she went to the kitchen to see if there was any food.
Given there were only instant noodles and an egg in the fridge, Reyna made a bowl of instant noodles for him.
As he was in poor health, she didn’t put any chili pepper.
“Bentley, come over and have noodles.”
She took out the instant noodles and saw Bentley flipping through her notebook.
“Stop!” Reyna’s face turned red as she rushed over him. She snatched the notebook from his hand and said with an embarrassed smile, “Don’t look. There’s nothing to see.”
She was so anxious that she didn’t notice that there was something dropping to the ground.
It was a photo. Bentley bent down and picked it up. He became upset when seeing the couple on it.
He held the photo harder and fixed his eyes on the woman’s smiling face. “I saw it,” he said.
Reyna was stunned. She saw the photo of them in his hand, and the smile froze on her lips.
She grabbed it and put it back in her notebook, “Give it to me, Bentley.”
This photo was taken before the fire. At that time, Bentley’s face was not disfigured, and she was careless.
But now, everything changed. Whenever she saw this picture, she would think of the fire and Bentley, who was badly hurt by the fire.
And she felt like she couldn’t breathe. So, she didn’t want him to see it and felt miserable.
Bentley wore a gloomy and cold expression. No one could tell what he was thinking from his deep blue eyes.
He stared at her face and asked, “You have been keeping it, right?”
Reyna nodded and looked up at him, “I thought you had died. Whenever I thought of you, I would look at the photo. I’m sorry…”
Only in this way would she be strong and brave enough to live.
