She fastened it around her neck. It lifted her dress from elegant to stunning—and, after all, she would not have many opportunities to wear such expensive jewellery.
Alexander was waiting for her when she entered the bar, tall, dark and impossible handsome, in a dark suit and white silk shirt. He was standing by the open French windows, staring out at the gardens, but swung round as she approached him, an indefinable expression on his face when he first saw her. Something blazed in his eyes—male appreciation mixed with another curious emotion that caused Stephanie to hesitate several feet from him. It was the same look she thought she had glimpsed the previous night, a look of contempt and disgust that caused a tickle of ice to slither down her spine. His gaze seemed to be locked on the diamonds at her throat— but then he smiled and moved towards her, and she told herself that his unsettling expression had been a trick of the light.
‘Stephanie, bella, you look gorgeous.’ In two lithe strides he was at her side, but instead of taking her hand and lifting it to his lips, as he had greeted her before, he slid his arms around her shoulders, lowered his head and claimed her mouth.
Stephanie gasped at the first butterfly-soft brush of his mouth on hers, and he took advantage of her parted lips, his tongue delving between them as he deepened the kiss in a sensual exploration that left her shaken and longing for more.
All day he had been so charming and attentive that he had made her feel like a princess, and now, when he finally lifted his mouth and stared deeply into her eyes, she felt as though she had fallen into pages of a fairytale and she never wanted to leave.
‘I’ve booked a table at a French restaurant in the village It’s not far to walk, or would you prefer to go by car ?’ He murmured, glancing at her high-heels.
‘Oh, we ‘II walk;’ Stephanie replied quickly, shuddering at the thought of traveling anywhere by car with him again.
‘Coward.’ He grinned.
His eyes crinkled at the corners when he smiled and Stephanie’s insides melted. He was so beautiful, she thought dazedly. So funny, sexy, clever— He was everything she looked for in a man, and it was no good reminding herself that she might never see him again after tonight, no good telling herself that it was impossible to fall in love with a man she’d only known for twenty-four hours. Whatever this feeling was—lust, love, she couldn’t put a name to it—she just knew that she’d never felt this way before. Her body ached for his touch, and she couldn’t fight the sexual attraction that shimmered between them.
She knew from the hunger blazing in Alexander’s eyes that he wanted her, and she had half expected him to have arranged for them to dine in the privacy of his suite—but it seemed that he was not going to try and bulldoze her into anything, and that made her respect him even more.
The sound of her mobile phone made her start, and she hastily fumbled in her purse to switch it off. ‘Oh, it’s James,’ she said, reading the caller display. ‘Do you mind if I answer it?’
‘Of course not,’ Alexander replied smoothly, but his smile faded the moment Stephanie stepped out onto the terrace to take the call. He had ensured that there had been no time for her to visit Ditton Hall all day, and he intended to keep her mind focused exclusively on him tonight, but it infuriated him, that he could not prevent her from having any contact with the Earl.
Stephanie had perfect flirting to an art form, he thought grimly as he watched her laughing and talking animatedly into her mobile. To his intense annoyance he had enjoyed the day with her far more than he had expected. Much to his surprise, she had been an intelligent and interesting companion, and it had struck him halfway through the day that if circumstances had been different his pursuit of her would have been genuine. But circumstances were not different, and beneath her facade of unworldly innocence Stephanie Stewart was a manipulative woman, playing on James’s emotional vulnerability. She had to be stopped—and he intended that her undisguised sexual awareness of him would be her downfall.
The restaurant Alexander had chosen was small and intimate with stone floors and a low-beamed ceiling that added to it’s rustic charm, but the food was French cuisine at it’s very best-each course an exquisite temptation that was out of this world.
‘Thank you for a wonderful evening,’ Stephanie said quietly when they strolled back through the village to the hotel later that night, her hand firmly clasped in his. The long days of mid June meant that dusk was only just falling, and in the soft, fading light Alexander’s eyes gleamed with an unspoken invitation that made her heart skip a beat.
‘My pleasure, bella,’ he murmured in his rich velvet voice that caressed her senses. ‘Would you like to go back to the for a nightcap—or come up to my suite?’ He saw the flare of uncertainty mixed with excitement in her eyes, and was confident that she would go with him. All his life he had been able to charm women with the minimum of effort on his part, and Stephanie had proved no exception, she hadn’t taken her eyes off him throughout dinner, and he knew from the tremor that shook her body now that she was close to capitulating to tempt her further, he dipped his head and captured her mouth, heat coursing through his veins when he felt her soft , moist lips part tentatively beneath his as she responded to the kiss with an intensity that inflamed his hunger, It would be no hardship taking her to his bed, he thought caustically, Rarely had duty been so pleasurable.
When Alexander finally broke the kiss,Stephanie swayed slightly, her heart beating so fast that she was sure he must feel it thudding against his chest.
