Other things—he stared down at the floor,as if wishing a hole would appear at his feet ‘—take precedence,’
‘The fault is entirely mine,’ Alexander replied smoothly, not glancing in Stephanie’s direction. ‘Stephanie and I had dinner together tonight and—well…’ He shrugged his shoulders laconically and smiled at James, seemingly unabashed. ‘One thing led to another, and I completely forgot we’d arranged to meet. Perhaps we can reschedule for tomorrow?’
‘Absolutely.’ James practically sprinted over to the door. ‘I’II wait to hear from you, Alexander. Goodnight, Stephanie,’ he called in a strangled voice over his shoulder, before he shot into the corridor and Alexander closed the door after him.
In the minutes that followed James’s abrupt departure Stephanie did not know where to look—although anywhere but at Alexander seemed good. It was ridiculous to feel so embarrassed, she told herself sternly. But only last night James had gently warned her that Alexander was a notorious womanizer, and instead of heeding that warning she had acted completely out of character and been prepared to sleep with him barely twenty-four hours after she’d met him. If James had not interrupted them she would have made love with Alexander—would probably still be making love with him, she acknowledged. A tremor ran through her when she looked at him, and her body reacted instantly to the fierce tug of sexual awareness that still held her in it’s grip.
‘Don’t look so stricken, bella,’ Alexander drawled as he strode across the room towards her.
Something in his voice sent a prickle of unease through her and she stared at him, shocked by his harsh expression.
‘Who knows? If you please me, I might buy you an even more expensive necklace than the one James have you.’
‘I don’t understand.’ Stephanie shivered. How could she ever have thought his eyes warm? They were as black as midnight, cold and pitiless, and the contempt in their depths was definitely not a figment of her imagination. ‘What has my necklace got to do with anything?’ She shook her head slowly trying to collate the thoughts swirling in her brain. ‘You knew James would come to your suite tonight—you’d arranged meeting him.’ She paused, trying to understand the message that was hovering at the edge of her mind. ‘But then—in the heat of the moment you forgot he was coming?’
Alexander’s mouth curved into a parody of a smile. ‘I didn’t forget,’ he told her coolly.
Although that was quite true, he acknowledged silently. His hunger for Stephanie had been so intense that by the time he had laid her ***** body on his bed his only aim had been to assuage his desperate need to possess her. It hadn’t been until James had knocked on the door that he had remembered his reason for Inviting her to his room, and for a few moments he’d still wanted to forget everything but the exquisite feel of her skin beneath his fingertips, and the sweet, damp heat between her legs that told him she was ready for him.
‘But why did you ask James to come tonight when you’d already invited me to dinner?’ Stephanie persisted in a shaken voice.
Her eyes were huge in her pale face, but the vulnerable, little-girl-lost-look was all part of her act, Alexander told himself darkly.
‘It’s quite simple,’ he said in a bored tone, crossing to the bar and sloshing a liberal amount of whiskey into a glass. ‘Do you want a drink?’
‘No!’
He shrugged and tipped half the contents of the glass down his throat. ‘I set you up, bella. I invited you to my room with the deliberate intention of seducing you, knowing that at some point James would turn up and find us together.’ He moved towards her and trailed his forefinger down to the vee between her breasts. The delicate floral fragrance of her skin teased his senses, and he realised that his heart was slamming painfully in his chest. ‘I have to say you made it very easy for me,’ he taunted softly.
‘I see.’ Something was very wrong. Nausea rolled over Stephanie, and she jerked away from him as if his touch defiled her. ‘Do you want to tell me why you would do such a thing?’
‘I wanted to end your involvement with James,’ Alexander stated bluntly. ‘He may be temporarily blinded by your not inconsiderable charms and your pseudo-sympathy, but he’s a shy, conservative man, and now that he thinks we’re sleeping together he’II forget any romantic ideas he may have had about you.’
‘What romantic ideas?’ Stephanie demanded in a stunned voice. ‘James and I are friends. He doesn’t see me in….that way,’ she shook her head in angry disbelief as Alexander’s words slowly made sense. ‘He’s the same age as my father, and he’s still grieving for his dead wife.’
‘Yes—James is lonely and unhappy. What an idea time for an attractive, sympathetic young woman to engineer a relationship with him,’ Alexander drawled softly.
‘I don’t believe this. What sort of a relationship do you think I hoped to engineer with him?’
‘I think you saw the benefits that could come from having an affair with a rich, older man,’ Alexander said, in a hard, cold voice that sounded the death knell to the stupid fantasies she had woven in her head throughout the day. ‘You saw that James craves companionship. His daughters are growing up and moving away, and soon he will be alone in his great ancestral home. Perhaps you even saw yourself as the next Lady Grainger,’ he continued in that same icy tone. ‘And if you grew bored with being tied to a man forty years older than you, a divorce could be extremely profitable.’
He gave a harsh laugh, remembering his stepmother’s unforgivable treatment of his father once she had secured his ring on her finger. Monica was a greedy, conniving cow, and he was certain that Stephanie had been cast from the same mould.
