He slid his hand down to her ******, and to her abject shame Stephanie felt her body betray her. The memory of how he had stroked her ***** breasts and laved each sensitive crest with his tongue tormented her, but the cynical expression in his eyes ripped her emotions to shreds.
‘So today,’ she whispered, her voice barely audible, ‘you deliberately set out to charm me?’ She remembered how they had walked hand in hand through the gardens of Hever Castle, talking, laughing, enjoying each other’s company—or so she had believed. It had been a magical day, one that she knew she would never forget, but now she wanted to weep with mortication as she recalled how she had trusted him and believed that he was as drawn to her as she was to him. ‘And dinner tonight? That was all part of your grand plan to win my trust and entice me to your room? You made love to me—‘her voice cracked ‘—simply to end my so called “relationship” with James ?’
Alexander stared at her white face. She was good, he acknowledged, feeling some Indefineable emotion twist in his gut when he caught the shimmer of tears in her eyes. She looked shattered. But no doubt that was because he had wrecked her plans to ingratiate herself with her wealthy Earl, not because he had genuinely hurt her. His stepmother had been an accomplished actress too, with an inexhaustible supply of tears that had fooled his father every time.
But tears did nothing for him, and his eyes narrowed as he stared down at the outline of her full, rounded breasts, clearly, visible beneath the clingy material of her dress. The first part of his plan had been accomplished. Now that James believed he and Stephanie were lovers, the older man would step back and realise that his future did not lie with the beautiful blonde. But Stephanie did not have to lose out completely, and neither did he with slow deliberation he began to stroke her ******, gently brushing his thumb across its center, and heat surged through him when he felt her ****** hardened beneath his touch.
‘Don’t!’ Appalled as much by her body’s treacherous response to him as his damnable arrogance, Stephanie gasped and tried to draw away, but he felt the tremor that ran through her body and laughed.
‘Why not, bella? You know we’re good together,’ he taunted softly. ‘Half an hour ago you could not disguise your desire for me any more than I can deny my hunger to possess you. Forget James,’ he urged, his voice suddenly fierce and feral with sexual tension. ‘I can give you what you want.’
Before she could think of a reply to his arrogant statement, he swooped and claimed her mouth in a searing kiss—hot, hard, forcing her head back as he ****** his tongue between her lips. The chemistry between them was a potent force she could not deny. Her body remembered his touch and trembled with renewed desire, but her pride fought a desperate battle and she tore her mouth from his, breathing as if she had run a marathon as she pushed against his chest.
‘How can you want me? You think I’m a…a gold-digger capable duping a vulnerable man,’ she cried wildly.
‘True, but I am not a vulnerable man, bella—far from it. I know what you are, and to be frank I don’t care. I want you ***** and willing in my bed. As I am sure you are aware,’ he added mockingly, as he slid his hand to her bottom and pulled her up against his hard, aroused body. ‘I want you now Stephanie—in the same way that you want me.’
The gleam in his eyes, coupled with the note of supreme confidence in his voice that said she would be unable to resist him, compounded Stephanie’s humiliation, and she shuddered and gagged on the corrosive bile that filled her throat.
‘Get your hands off me,’ she hissed, and a strength she hadn’t known she possessed empowered her to ****** him away from her. ‘I would rather die than share your bed.’ She sped across the room, Terrified that he would come after her—terrified that if he touched her, her body would betray her once more.
But when she reached the door she could not help but turn her head to look at him, absorbing his masculine beauty for one last time. How had she not noticed the inherent cruelty in the curve of his lips, or the hard, unforgiving coldness of his eyes? She had seen what she wanted to see, she thought bitterly. Once again her judgement had failed her. She had married a man who had had no intention of remaining faithful to her, and now she had been drawn to another who had let her believe he was genuinely interested in her while secretly planning to humiliate her.
She had to get away from him before she gave him the pleasure of seeing her fall apart, but she forced herself to speak. ‘James told me that you are an honorable man,’ she said with quiet dignity as she opened the door. ‘But clearly he was wrong. I hope and pray that you rot in hell Alexander Di Cesare,’ she added fiercely, her voice shaking with emotion. ‘Because that’s where you belong.’
Stephanie arrived back at her North London flat late on Thursday evening, and was immediately greeted by her flatmate Jess.
‘I was expecting you back from your sister’s two days ago,’ Jess said cheerfully as she padded into the kitchen in her pyjamas and filled the kettle. ‘I was beginning to think you’d eloped with a handsome stranger.’ She took one look at Stephanie’s shuttered expression and sighed. ‘But you’re here, so obviously not.’
‘Obviously.’ Stephanie dropped her case and gathered up the pile of letters from the kitchen worktop. ‘Vicky wasn’t feeling well, so I took a few more days off work.’
‘Oh, dear—what’s wrong with her? Nothing serious, I hope.’
‘She’s pregnant,’ Stephanie said, in a voice carefully devoid of all emotion.
