Alexander’s velvety voice caressed her and he moved his head even closer to hers, that his jaw brushed against her cheeks. ‘But perhaps whoever gave you the necklace hopes to be your lover?’
‘No,’ she denied sharply, jerking her head back. James is a dear friend who was still grieving the loss of his wife, and the idea that he had given her the necklace for any other reason than friendship was horrible. She didn’t understand why Alexander was so interested in the wretched necklace anyway.
When she tried to step away from him he drew her inexorably closer, so that she could feel the hardness of his thighs pressed against hers. ‘I’m not involved with anyone right now. Does that satisfy your curiosity?’ He unsettled her, but before she could demand that he release her, he tightened his arms around her.
‘Absolutely,’ he growled, in a low, Intense tone that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. ‘And I am relieved that you are not involved with another man, Stephanie because it means that you are free to become involved with me.
‘Wh…what?’ She said, stunned. ‘We don’t know one another. We only met five minutes ago.’
‘But the attraction between us was instant.’ Alexander states coolly, the glint in his eyes daring her to deny it. ‘Sexual alchemy at it’s most potent.’
As if to prove his point, he slid his hand down her back until it rested at the very base of her spine, and then exerted pressure so she was forced into even closer contact with his blatantly aroused body. His action should have appalled her,but to Stephanie’s shame all she could think was that their clothes were an unwelcome barrier, and that she longed to feel his warm, ***** flesh pressed against hers.
‘Lust is such an honest sentiment, don’t you think?’ He murmured, in his deep, sexy voice that alone had the power to bring her skin out in goosebumps. The chemistry that exists between a man and a woman. I want you and you want me— what could be simpler or more honest than that?’
It would be very easy to be swept away by Alexander Di Cesare’s sultry charm, Stephanie acknowledged. If she was honest, part of her longed to succumb to his magnetism and follow blindly wherever he led—which, from the sexual heat in his gaze, would, she guessed, be straight to his bed. But some deeply ingrained instinct for self-protection warned her that she would be way out of her depth. She had never met a man like Alexander before. In the two years since her divorce she hadn’t even been on a date, and although she could not deny that she was attracted to him, experience had taught her to be cautious.
Fortunately there was a lull in the music, and she stepped firmly out his arms. Across the room she saw James walking adjoining banqueting suite, and she gave Alexander a cool smile. ‘I think I’m going to investigate the buffet, signor,’ she said steadily. ‘The sandwiches I bought at the service station on the way down were inedible, and I’m starving. I’m sure you’II have no trouble in finding another dance partner,’ she added dryly. She had been aware of numerous pairs of female eyes following Alexander around the dance floor, and knew that the moment she walked away from him there would be a scramble for his attention.
He glanced across the room, following her gaze over to James before his eyes settled once more on her face, and for a split second she thought she glimpsed a look of icy contempt in the dark depth.
James Grainger was sitting at one of the tables arranged around the room, and once Stephanie had selected her food she started to make way towards him. But Alexander was instantly at her side, steering her determinedly over to an empty table in a secluded corner. Before she could remonstrate, he took her plate, set it down on the table, and drew out a chair for her to sit down. A waiter materialized with a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket. Alexander filled two glasses, handed her one, then raised his own, his smile revealing a set of perfect teeth that gleamed white against his olive skin. For some reason Stephanie was reminded of a wolf preparing to devour its prey, and a faint prickle of unease feathered down her spine.
‘What shall we drink to Stephanie? To us,as we set out on a journey to see where this sexual awareness between us might lead?’
‘Certainly not,’ Stephanie replied quickly. ‘We ought to toast the bride and groom and wish them a long and happy marriage.’ Her voice faltered a fraction as she thought of her own failed marriage. Luciana and Liam were so in love that it seemed to radiate from them— but would it last?
Her brief marriage had been a salutary life lesson that had left her heart bruised and her pride in tatters. She had been an impressionable twenty-one year-old when Fabian Harper had swept into her life. She’d fallen in love with good-looking ambitious banker, and been overjoyed when he proposed six months later. But the fairy tale had ended a year after their wedding, when he’d left her for a glamorous city trader called Jacqueline.
On her wedding day she had thought that her love for Fabian would last a lifetime— and that he loved her with the same intensity, Stephanie remembered sadly. She had believed that her hopes and expectations had been his dreams too, and it had only been afterwards, after he’d moved out on Christmas Eve and told her he was filing for a divorce, that she’d learned he had been sleeping with Jacqueline even before the wedding and that their affair had continued when he and Stephanie had returned from honeymoon. Her marriage had been a sham from the beginning, she acknowledged bleakly, unaware that Alexander was watching the play of emotions on her face.
