CHAPTER SEVEN
‘This is madness,’ he growled in a raw tone. He seemed to be waging a battle with himself, and he was breathing hard as he stared at her upturned face before he lowered his head once more. Their mouths met, fusing with a wildfire passion that was fierce and hot and shockingly primitive. His tongue forced entry between her lips and proceeded to explore her with thoroughness that left her trembling, her limbs so weak that she clung to his shoulders and anchored her fingers in the silky dark hair at his nape.
Nothing had prepared her for the bolt of white-hot need that ripped through her, scalding her flesh and tossing her doubts and inhibitions aside as if they were flotsam on the tide. She was burning up in the blazing heat of his passion. At last Alexander eased the pressure of his mouth a fraction, and the kiss became a long, unhurried tasting that drugged her senses and stoked her desire, so that her breasts felt full and heavy and ached for his touch.
‘My room or yours?’ he demanded, barely lifting his mouth from hers.
His harsh, grating voice splintered the soft night air and shattered the spell he had woven around her. Reality reared it’s unwelcome head, and she stared at him dazedly.
‘I….’
‘I have to have you, bella—tonight.’ He had never known such fierce hunger for a woman, and such was his desperation to possess her that he was tempted to carry her into the shadowed grounds and **** **** to her on the grass.
Somewhere in the recesses of his mind Alexander knew that he had an ulterior motive for persuading Stephanie into his bed. His intentions was to persuade her to transfer her attention from James to him—secure in the knowledge that, whilst James might be tempted to fall in love with her, he, Alexander, never would.
But right now nothing seemed more important than assuaging the throbbing ache that consumed him.
‘The other guests are starting to leave. No one will notice if we slip away to my suite,’ he murmured hoarsely, staring at Stephanie in disbelief when she shook her head and stepped away from him.
‘I can’t,’ she whispered. ‘I’m sorry,’
‘Madre de Dio! Stephanie—‘
Alexander’s furious voice followed Stephanie as she flew along the terrace and through the doors to the ballroom, her heart beating so hard she was sure it would burst out of her chest.
He was right. Many of the guests were leaving, and only few couples remained on the dance floor. They would not have been missed. If she had said yes to Alexander’s husky request they would already be in his room, and he would be kissing her with the same hungry passion that had overwhelmed them both a few moments ago.
Why hadn’t she agreed to go with him? She asked herself angrily. Why hadn’t she for once in her life followed the dictates of her body rather than her brain? Alexander had aroused her to such a fever-pitch of desire that every muscle seemed to be screaming with sexual frustration. But the sound of his voice, his confident assumption that she would fall into his bed as readily as she had responded to his kisses, had halted her wanton response to him.
After her disastrous marriage her self-confidence was at rock-bottom, she acknowledged miserably, hurrying out of the ballroom and across the hotel foyer. She had been flattered by Alexander’s attention and shocked by the feelings he aroused in her. But she was well aware of his reputation as a womaniser. He was a billionaire playboy who was used to women throwing themselves at him, and her pride refused to allow her to be just another notch on his bedpost.
‘Stephanie, my dear, is everything all right?’ James Grainger emerged from the hotel lounge and Stephanie skidded to a halt in front of him. ‘You look rather flushed.’
‘Oh… it was hot in the ballroom, and I think I’ve had too much champagne,’ she said quickly, casting a nervous glance over her shoulder to see if Alexander had followed her. I’m going up to my room now, James—‘she broke off and caught hold of his arm as he swayed unsteadily. ‘You don’t look at all well.’
I’m just tire, it’s been a long and emotional day—but a successful one, I think,’ James murmured, giving her a weary smile. ‘Luciana and Liam are on their way to the airport, and Jennifer is still in the bar with her friends. But I’m going back to the Hall now. Hargreaves is waiting out front with the car.
‘Let me help you.’ Without waiting for James to reply Stephanie tightened her hold on his arm and urged him to lean on her as they walked slowly across the foyer. At the top of the steps he stumbled, and she was glad when his chauffeur hurried to offer his assistance. ‘I’II come and see you tomorrow,’ she promised gently, and James nodded.
‘I’d like that. I want to discuss ideas for the house,’ He hesitated, and then added in a voice tinged with embarrassment ‘Stephanie, I couldn’t help but notice that you seemed rather taken with Alexander tonight. And there’s nothing at all wrong with that,’ he continued swiftly, when she blushed scarlet ‘I’ve known Alexander for years, and he is a fine, honourable man— but a man, nevertheless, who has a deserved reputation as a playboy. Just be careful, hmm?’ he said softly as he climbed into the car. ‘Goodnight, my dear.’
