“Your pizza looks…appetizing.” Pru said sarcastically as she eyed my plate. “What is it?”
“Chicken alfredo.” I answered. “I figured since I like chicken alfredo and I like pizza, I might like the combo as well.”
Pru shook her head as she sat down next to me. “I don’t know. In my opinion, those two shouldn’t be in the same sentence together.”
I shrugged, picked up a slice and bit into it. A few minutes later, Erin arrived at our table and sat down with his own meat supreme pizza. This had been our new routine—Erin having lunch with us. We’ve been doing group texting and agreed to have lunch together from now on.
“You’re right.” I said to Pru as I made a face. “It’s not as good as I thought.”
“Do you want mine?” Erin offered generously. “We can trade and I’ll eat yours for you, if you want.”
“That’d be great!” I said happily. “Although I’m not a fan of this much meat but the marinara sauce will go down easier than the alfredo sauce.” I took his plate and pushed mine toward him with a smile. “Thank you!”
“No problem.” He replied with a charming smile of his own.
“I’m glad I played it safe and stayed with my simple mushroom and pepperoni pizza.” Pru bragged between bites.
I rolled my eyes and laughed. “Like you would ever order anything else.”
“Well, it worked didn’t it?” Pru countered smugly. “At least I’m enjoying my delicious pizza that I knew would taste good.” She had to put emphasis on the word ‘knew.’
“Fine. You won this round.” I grudgingly admitted.
“Are you guys ready for your Biochem exam after this?” Erin interjected into the conversation as he bit into a slice of my not-so-tasty chicken alfredo pizza.
“Yup. Bring it on!” Pru said with certitude.
“As ready as I can be I guess.” I didn’t have the same confidence as Pru. I sucked at memorizing physicochemical processes and that was mainly what the exam consisted of.
I winced when a sharp pain erupted in my stomach after I swallowed a bite of food.
“Are you okay?”
“What’s wrong with you?”
Erin and Pru asked simultaneously with concerned eyes.
“It’s nothing.” I tried to brush it off since the brief prick disappeared as fast as it had came.
This morning, a dull stomach pain appeared as I was getting ready for school. It was mild so I didn’t think too much about it. I figured if it persisted onto the next day then I would start worrying.
After the discomfort subsided, I managed to finish half of my 12 inch pizza. Erin ended up eating the rest of it like a growing boy. He had devoured one and a half pizza like it was nothing.
“So I got a reservation for 4 at this new Italian restaurant tonight. Would you guys be interested?” Erin asked as he took a sip of his Mountain Dew.
“Sure. I wouldn’t pass up a free meal.” Pru grinned.
“Yeah. Why not.” I didn’t feel like eating dinner alone tonight.
Erin smiled broadly at our acceptances and added. “I also got really good seats to tomorrow’s football game if you guys wanna go. We’re playing Ohio State so it should be packed.”
Ohio State is our school’s number one nemesis so of course the stadium would be packed. It would be a very well matched game—one worth watching.
“We haven’t been to a game for a while.” Pru said and then turned to me. “We should go. It’ll be fun!”
“Yeah. Okay.” I was somewhat excited because at least now I got plans for the weekend and not sit around missing Artemis.
I had woken up to an empty bed this morning which wasn’t unusual. However, I was quite disappointed at not being able to see him before he left.
After lunch, the throbbing torment continued through my exam and all the way into the evening when Erin picked us up for dinner. Luckily, it was subtle so I didn’t notice it most of the time. The only time I was aware of it was when it suddenly got sharp for a second or two.
When we arrived at the restaurant, it was completely full. The host brought us to our table and there were no empty seats in sight.
Pru and I picked the chairs next to each other while Erin got the one across from us.
The moment we sat down, Pru asked curiously. “Who was supposed to be the fourth person?”
“My friend Andy was supposed to come but he had something came up at the last minute.” Erin answered casually.
Pru suddenly nudged me and whispered in my ear. “Didn’t you say Artemis flew out this morning?”
I nodded and she continued. “Then what is he doing over there?” She pointed with her eyes.
“I wasn’t lying about Andy if that’s what you’re whispering about.” Erin said defensively.
“Don’t worry. I wasn’t talking about you.” Pru reassured him with her dimples showing while I stayed silent as I looked over to my right.
Sitting a few tables behind Erin were Theo and Samantha, or at least I thought it was Theo. They seemed really lovey dovey as Theo laughed at something Samantha said; he was rubbing his thumb over the top of her hand on the table.
I couldn’t out right tell Pru about Artemis having a look-a-like without revealing secret information. Before I could make up a believable lie, Pru grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward Theo and Samantha’s table.
“Well. Well. What do we have here?” Pru asked as if expecting Theo to be scared because he was caught in an affair.
I pulled at her arm and tried get her away from the table while saying, “Sorry for the interruption. Please excuse us.”
“Wait.” Samantha stopped us before I could get Pru to step away. “Aren’t you that girl who claimed that Artemis is your husband?” She said with a smirk on her fake plump lips.
“Sorry. That was only a misunderstanding.” I apologized with a fake smile and tried to pull Pru away again but she stood rooted to the floor. She was still glaring at Theo waiting for him to react but all she got was a blank stare from him.
Samantha stood up and laughed sweetly. “No. There was no misunderstanding. I remembered seeing you in his office before that. And you were also the one who stood out like a red flag at the gala.”
Suddenly, the mild ache in my tummy got worse and moved to my lower right abdomen as the pain slowly intensified. I bit down on my bottom lip trying to endure the agony.
Erin must have been standing right by me but I was too focused on Samantha to notice. He suddenly spoke up as he touched my arm. “Are you okay? You don’t look so good.”
Samantha snickered. “She’s probably trembling in her shoes because she’s caught in a web of lies.”
“Lady, you better shut up before you say things you might regret later.” Pru snapped.
Theo finally stood up and intervened. “Samantha. Let’s just forget it.”
“No.” Samantha was not relenting anytime soon. “There’s something going on here and I plan to get to the bottom of it. She can’t just claim to be your wife one minute and simply walk away the next while using misunderstanding as a pathetic excuse.”
The pain got so bad that I could barely breathe. I ignored everybody as I grabbed on to Erin’s arm, bruising him in the process and said through gritted teeth. “Please take me to the hospital.”
“You don’t have to worry about my girlfriend interfering with your future dates. I will make sure to take care of her.” Erin said pointedly at Theo.
I couldn’t comprehend what was going on or else I would’ve reprimanded Erin for saying such things. All my attention was zoomed in on the excruciating tenderness in my side. My fingers dug deeper and harder into Erin’s arm signaling him to quickly rush me out of the restaurant.
