I slowly walked into the room as the doors automatically swung shut behind me.
“Artemis, what’s going on?” I asked hesitantly as I looked at him, then at Theo and then back at him.
Now that they were standing next to each other, it was a little bit easier to tell who was who. Artemis was slightly taller, his hair thicker, his suit fitted better, his stance straighter and more confident, and his eyes had more depth and emotions—maybe because I knew him intimately that I could these things clearer.
“Grace.” Artemis spoke up, his voice indifferent. “Go home first and we’ll talk later.”
The moment I heard the last two words—talk later—my blood instantly boiled because that was what he had said many times before. He was back to his old self and shutting me out.
I was his wife, damn it. I deserved to know. Shouldn’t he trust me? Confide in me? Lean on me? Was I so weak and untrustworthy that he would tell Samantha and not me?
That last thought pissed me off further—that even freaking Samantha took precedent over me.
I waited a whole week to see him and the first thing he said after seeing me was this. I had imagined running into his arms and kissing him senseless when I see him again but not this, definitely not this—him being cold and distant to me.
Did that night mean nothing to him? Why is it that it’s the women who always put more importance into the love making act than the men. The infuriating thought only made me angrier.
Samantha took my silent fuming as defeat and walked up to the real Artemis as she put her painted red nails on his chest. “You again.” She cozied up to him as she smirked at me. “Why do you keep showing up to places where you’re not welcomed?”
I can say the same for you, I wanted to say but instead, I ignored her. All I could focus on was Artemis and how he didn’t do anything. He just stood there, stiff and not pushing the annoying woman away as he stared back at me.
“Artemis.” My voice pleading. I was nonverbally begging him to detach himself from the despicable woman, to tell her that I was his wife and that he was already taken, that he didn’t want to have anything to do with her, and that I had every right to be here despite what Samantha might think.
“Didn’t you hear him?” Samantha said sweetly as her eyes threw daggers at me. “Go home, little girl.”
I continued to ignore her and kept my gaze on Artemis. My eyes stung and I could feel tears forming but I refused to blink in case I missed the emotions showing in his eyes. I wanted to see what he was trying to tell me, if he cared about me at all.
My incisions started to throb as I stood patiently waiting for a response from Artemis. I bit down on my bottom lip as the pain slowly intensified but I stubbornly persisted to ride it out.
Suddenly, things seemed to move around me and I swayed as my hand involuntarily came up to cup my forehead.
“Oh please. You can drop the act.” Samantha snickered but Artemis speedily moved and got to me in five quick steps.
“Are you okay?” He asked as he gripped my shoulders. “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know.” I said, unsure, as I held my head. “I feel a little dizzy.”
Samantha walked up behind Artemis and tried to refute me. “She’s acting! She pretends to be in pain whenever she tries to get out of an awkward situation.”
Artemis kept his attention on me as his head bent worriedly over me. Not getting the reaction she wanted, Samantha plowed forward. “She even doubled over at a fancy restaurant while everyone stared at her. I’m telling you, this girl has no shame.”
Finally, Artemis turned to her and asked icily. “What the hell are you talking about?”
Satisfied that she got his attention, Samantha proceeded smugly. “Theo and I met her at a restaurant last Friday. After our encounter, she tried to get away by doubling over in pain. Some guy even claimed to be her boyfriend.”
“Boyfriend.” Artemis repeated distractedly.
“Yeah. So don’t believe a word she says. She claimed to be your wife and also claimed to be someone else’s girlfriend. She obviously gets around, if you know what I mean.”
“Enough.” His voice dripped with irritation. “Nate, get these people out of here and I’ll deal with them later.”
“Wait. Artemis…” Samantha was cut off as Nate motioned for her to go to the door. “This is far from over. You need me, Artemis.” She huffed as she stomped out with Theo right behind her.
“You’re burning up.” He said with his forehead touching mine. “What’s going on?”
“I think my incisions might be infected.” I slightly pressed on the larger incision and winced.
Artemis was immediately on guard. “What’s the matter? What incisions?” Concern etched in his handsome face.
“Can you take me to the hospital?” I grabbed onto his sleeve. “I’ll tell you on the way.”
He instantly swept me off my feet and the action made me even more dizzy as he carried me to the elevator.
Once in the elevator he said. “Why is it that every time I’m back from a trip, I’d be carrying you somewhere. Can’t you stay out of trouble when I’m not around?”
“No. That’s why you need to stay home more often.” I stated, half serious and half joking…well, mostly serious but he probably didn’t know that.
“What happened while I was gone. Why do you have incisions?”
“I had my appendix taken out.” I said casually and he paused after getting out of the elevator.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked looking down at me.
“I didn’t want you to worry and I knew you couldn’t fly back in time anyway.” I said with a little resentment, I couldn’t keep it out of my voice.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there.” He said regretfully. “I’ll make sure to be there next time.”
“I hope there’s no next time.” I whined.
He chuckled and started walking. “So who’s this boyfriend that Samantha mentioned?”
“Oh.” I was hoping he had forgotten about this. “Erin only said that to save me from embarrassment.”
“Erin again.” He said disapprovingly.
“What. What’s wrong with Erin?” I asked. “He’s a really nice guy. And he’s been nice enough to take me to and from school this past week.”
His grip tightened around me and he stopped at his car. “I just don’t want you to get too close to him.”
“Why?” I didn’t know what he had against Erin.
He ignored me and added as he put me down in the passenger seat. “I could’ve had a driver take you to and from school.”
“But you didn’t.” I said cheekily. I had not complained about Samantha and yet he had the nerve to complain about Erin. I mentally shook my head.
He got in on the driver side and started driving. I closed my eyes to see if that would help with the dizziness. He reached over and grabbed my hand, interlocking our fingers.
“I missed you.” He said out of nowhere.
I had to do a double take because I thought I had imagined it. Artemis, my Artemis actually just blurted out his feelings? Okay, so they were only three words—not the three I wanted to hear—but it was still better than nothing.
I stared at his profile and asked. “Can you say that again?”
He chuckled and repeated as his fingers tightened around mine. “I missed you.”
“I missed you, too.” More than you’ll ever know, I thought sadly.
“Artemis?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you love me?”
