Scarlett’s POV:
A frown appeared on Charles face as though Alice has already asked so many questions.
“Fine I won’t ask you anymore. As for the divorce I suggest you think it through again, but you know it will be great if Scarlett gets pregnant while you are at.” Alice hurriedly said with the shrug.
“Alice I just came here to get my face treated, it’s not what you think.” I quickly explain not wanting Alice to misunderstand me more. After fighting with the buttons for a long time I finally buttoned them up.
“You don’t have to explain I am the one who should apologize. I didn’t know you both return here last night. But you don’t have to be shy about it, that’s normal for a man and woman, after all. Besides you two are legal couple. You are free to do anything you want.” Alice admitted her faults but still did not let the matter go.
Truth be told I felt the urge to cry when I heard what she had said.
Charles and I had already made up our minds about the divorce but now Alice misunderstand what was happening between us again. What should I do now.
Anxious, I grabbed Charles hand and asked him, “Please tell mom that we have already agreed on divorce yesterday.”
However Charles merely withdraw his hand and rested his head on it. He then looked at me blankly, as if it was none of his business.
That made my blood boil. I wanted to beat him up then and there, but there was nothing I could do but hold anger.
Flustered, I turned my face away from him. It was then when Alice caught the sight of the palm print on my face.
“Scarlett!! what happened to your face? Oh my God!! Charles did you beat her? Oh my god you jerk!! how can you do that?”
Alice was fuming in anger as she thought that it was Charles who slapped me on the face. “It wasn’t me but I have already taken care of it”. Charles held my chin gently and turn my head to face him. His high spirits did not seem to change at all. At that moment he opened the medicinal kit on the table and applied the ointment on my face again.
My face did not hurt as much as it did last night but since I was still angry and resentful, I tried to push his hand away and keep him at an arm’s length.
As Alice saw that Charles and I did not fight again she did not ask any further questions. She just left without a word and also closed the door behind for us.
Judging from her brisk pace, she must be eager to tell Michael and Christine about what she has seen.
“Why didn’t you explain her everything? We agreed to get divorce today. Didn’t we?” I asked Charles once his mother was gone.
“Mom has already misunderstood me. If we told her that we are going to divorce today, she would even beat me. You know how violent she can be,” Charles explain patiently while applying ointment on my face with a cotton swab.
“Then why didn’t you let me go last night?”
“I never stopped you”, he retorted with an innocent look.
I was speechless. Yes he did not stop me but he held me tightly in his arms. I had to sleep in his warm embrace all night long.
It was all his fault. Alice would not have seen us like that if he would have not done it in the first place.
“Nevermind. But I am telling you don’t try to delay the divorce. You have promised me,” I reminded him. However his mouth remain shut about the matter.
This maddened me so I pulled down his hand and advised, ” I’ll make an appointment with the lawyer later. I won’t leave until you come. I’ll wait for you no matter what. Don’t postpone it anymore. It’s unlike you.”
With that, I left leaving him in daze.
Charles POV:
Two hours ago I receive the call from the hospital that Rita was in a critical condition. I drove to the hospital at once. As soon as I reached there Rita’s mother Susan held my arm and broke into tears.
“Charles please fullfill Rita’s wish. She cannot hold it any longer. Please we are begging you, Rita is our only daughter. I can’t bear to see her like this. I… I wish it was me instead of her who was dying. I am begging you Charles, she cannot hold it any longer. Her health is deteriorting.”
“I’ll talk with Rita.” I walked away from Susan as a dreadful feeling washed upon me.
“Charles you cannot tell this to Rita. Her health is already getting worse. She would not be able to bear the bad news. If you really love her and if you don’t want her to leave with any regret, you should be get married to her as soon as possible.”
Just as I was about to walk into rita’s room Susan walk a step forward and deaftly grabbed my arm.
“To tell you that truth we do not expect her to make it. we just don’t want her to leave the world with any regrets. Please stop messing with Scarlett and marry my daughter as soon as possible.”
I turned around and looked at her coldly. “Is that why you went to the TV station to meet Scarlett.”
Susan froze. She stopped crying and lowered the head with a guilty look.
Although tempting, I figured out this was not the right time to settle the account with her, so I shrug off her arm and went straight to Rita’s ward.
But before I could touch the door knob, I stiffened in my spot. It suddenly occurred to me what Scarlett has told me this morning. She said she would call a lawyer and wait for me no matter what.
I was a loss. For a moment, I felt like my body had a mind of it’s own. Before I knew it, I turned around and left.
Through the glass panel of the ward, I saw a familiar figure get up from the bed and sprint towards the door.
She did not seem like a patient in a critical condition at all.
Scarlett’s POV:
I stood at the entrance of the law building and watched people go in and out of it. Unfortunately, the one I was waiting for was nowhere to be seen.
This morning, I excused myself from the TV station so I could go through the divorce formalities. However, it seems like I excused myself for nothing.
But suddenly I remembered that I had told Charles that I would not leave until he will come. Because of this I decided to wait for him nevertheless.
Finally, in the afternoon just as I was about to give up, a familiar black car came to a halt in front of the building.
It was Charles.
As he got of the car, I noticed he was wearing a nice, crisp suit. It seemed that he came here prepared.
“Here you are. Hurry up. They will be closing soon.” I urged.
