“Just shut up and fight me,” I say bluntly.
He doesn’t need to be told twice.
He charges towards me and the crowd goes wild, all of them but Papa. He remains completely still as he watches my opponent lunge for my head, directing his blows towards my brain. I dodge out of his way and swing underneath his arm, taking the chance to hit out at his stomach. A groan comes from him as I land three jabs before bouncing backwards.
I hold my hand up and motion for him to come at me, a small smirk on my face. His eyes burn with hatred as he charges at me a second time, slamming his body weight nto mine. This time, I let my knee come up, hard. It smacks into his face and the crunch noise echoes around me.
I’ve definitely broken his nose…
The men who have placed bets on me begin cheering wildly, their chants echoing through my ears. All of them are urging me to carry on hitting him, beat his body lifeless until they win.
So that’s what I do.
I continue to punch and kick him with the occasional head butt. I feel myself drown out the noise, the crowd around me becoming a blur. The only thing I focus on is my breathing as I lay into him, punch after punch. Blood clouds my vision and it stains my hands. I don’t know whether it’s his blood or mine. I lose myself in the fight, my mind clearing entirely.
I don’t know how long the fight lasts for until Caleb is pulling me back by the shoulders, restraining me. I breathe heavily, my eyes wide with adrenaline. My bare chest is rising up and down and sweat glistens all over me.
“It’s over Alex! It’s over!” He yells at me as he keeps me restrained. I finally stop struggling and shake my head. clearing my vision. My opponent is lying on the floor, lifeless. His body doesn’t move and his eyes are closed, face covered in blood. Red pools cover the floor and my shorts are now stained with it.
“Is it over?” I ask him, my voice only loud enough for him to hear. Behind me, Caleb nods, his face white as he stares at my opponent. I can see the fear in Caleb’s eyes despite him already knowing what I’m capable of. I tear my eyes off my lifeless opponent and stand up, my legs shaking underneath me.
“Good, collect the money.” I say, my eyes cold and emotionless. nods grimly at me before disappearing into the crowd. I glance up and meet eyes with Papa’s. He’s staring directly at me, a glimmer of victory in his eyes. I get the urge to head butt him as he nods towards me, letting me know I did well in the fight.
Of course I did well, I practically killed the guy. I grit my teeth tightly and turn around, walking away from him. As I leave, I wipe my fists on my shorts, staining the fabric further with a mixture of my blood and the other guy’s blood. Once I turn the corner and I’m out of everyone’s sight, I bend down, clutching my stomach. The sight of the guys lifeless body flashes through my mind and I retch, spewing up my guts all over the floor.

…ARIANA’S POV -…
It’s been days.
I’ve isolated myself at home, in bed, doing absolutely nothing but eat tubs of ice cream and order in pizza. Justin has tried every single day to call me, once every hour. Some days, I turn my phone off, sick of seeing his contact flash up onto the screen.
I’ve cried so much, I feel dehydrated and poorly. The doorbell rings and I pull myself out of bed, wrapping my dressing gown around me tightly as I walk down the stairs. I pull open the front door and mumble a thanks to the pizza delivery guy before taking the box from him. The scent of carbs surround me and I instantly feel better.
“Honey, there’s dinner on the side for you.” Mum says, frowning at the pizza box in my hand. I hold it up, shrugging.
“Sorry Mum, pizza wins.”
“You’ve had pizza for the past five days Ariana…”
I look at her with a blank expression, motioning for her to continue with my spare hand. When she doesn’t give me a valid reason on why I shouldn’t have pizza every single night, I sigh.
“Is there a problem with that?”
“No, of course not honey. I just thought you might be sick of pizza by now.” Mum frowns, her eyebrows creased with concern. I shake my head, making my way back upstairs.
“Not yet Mum! thanks for caring though.”
“When are you next in work honey?” Mum asks, stopping me from halfway up the stairs. I close my eyes for a brief second.
I’m not sure yet Mum. I took a few days off as an emergency holiday: Cue the questions.
“Oh… that’s not like you.”
“Yeah, I know.” I murmur, scurrying up the remaining stairs. I don’t want to have this conversation with her, not now. She adores the ground Justin walks on. “Is everything with Justin okay?”
Ah, there it is. The infamous Justin question. I pretend like I don’t hear her and lock myself in my room, exhaling deeply.
“No, everything with Justin is so not okay.” I mutter under my breath, dropping myself back down in bed. The covers are still warm and I sigh deeply, turning the volume up on my TV. My phone rings again and I grit my teeth, burying it under all of my blankets to drown out the noise.
“Stupid Justin,” I mutter, slamming the photo frame down on its front that’s on my bedside table. It’s a picture of me and him at the zoo, we’re standing on either side of a giraffe, sporting cheesy smiles. The giraffe doesn’t look as happy as we do. Did.
“Dîckhead Justin” I continue to talk to myself whilst gorging on pizza and watching some crappy television game show. Right now, it’s all I want to be doing.
