- Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 I Want the Watch
“Ms. King, I was at the park with the children and Mia disappeared-.”
“What?” Caroline exclaimed. “I’m sorry Ms. King. I looked away for one second and next thing I know, Achilles and Ian are telling me Mia had gone missing.” Caroline took the phone from her ear and took a deep breath. Losing her composure for this would only make the situation worse.
“Where are you right now?” She finally voiced after placing her phone back on her ear. “At the house, Ms. King. I am with Achilles and Ian.”
“Are they okay?”
“Yes, Ms. King.”
“Stay there. Don’t go out.”
“I’m really sorry, Ms. King. I didn’t mean for this to happen. I don’t know how-.”
“It’s okay, Lousia. Just stay inside, I will go find Mia.” Caroline instantly hung up the phone and walked out of the office. As she stormed out, Joseph followed behind her. “Ms. King-.”
“I have something important to tend to. I will finish work later.” Caroline walked over to the elevator as she made another phone call. The elevator descended as she waited for the call to get through.
After a couple of rings when the call finally got through, Caroline finally spoke, “where are you?”
“Caroline? I’m still in France. Why?”
“Someone kidnapped Mia. I need you to mobilize some of your men.”
“What? What do you mean someone kidnapped Mia?”
“She was at the park and then she disappeared.” Charles let out a sigh and then said, “are you sure she was kidnapped?”
“Hold on, I have another call.”
“Caroline, wait-.”
“Hello?” Caroline spoke after accepting Roxy’s call and ending her conversation with Charles. “Caroline, I found Mia wandering around the street. Are you still at the park?” Hearing Roxy’s words, Caroline thought there was something suspicious going on.
“Yes, I am,” Caroline responded, “we were playing hide and seek, but she seems to have wandered a bit far and gotten lost. I’ve been looking for her like crazy.” Roxy chuckled and then spoke, “what a silly little girl you have, Caroline. She told me she wanted to eat some ice cream, so I took her to a nearby ice cream shop.”
“Okay, I’ll be right there,” Caroline responded. “Oh, we’re not at the ice cream shop anymore. I took her for a little drive. I hope you don’t mind.”
“Not at all, just tell me where you are. I will go pick her up.”
“I’ll send you the location right now, but since I am doing this for you, I was hoping you could do me a favor.”
“What is it?” Roxy responded without hesitation, “I want the watch.”
“What watch?”
“The pocket watch. Bring it to me or you won’t get your kid back.” Roxy hung up the call, making Caroline storm out the elevator, swiftly making her way to the entrance of the building.
As she waited for her car, she dialed Sebastian’s number. On the first ring, Sebastian answered the call. “Hey, Care Bear.” Caroline got in her Mercedes-Benz and closed the door before speaking. “Your girlfriend kidnapped Mia. I need you to go to the location I will send you. I will meet you there.”
In Paris, Charles and Persephone were peacefully sleeping when they were woken up by the ringing sound of Charle’s cellphone. Charles slowly sat up and picked up the phone. He answered the call, placing the phone by his ear. “Caroline?” He spoke in a hoarse voice.
After Caroline hung up the call, Charles leaned back, resting up against the headboard. He let out a sigh as Persephone finally sat up. “What happened?” She asked in a sleepy voice. “Caroline just called me. She said Mia was kidnapped.”
“What?” Persephone exclaimed. “How could this happen?” Charles shrugged. “Are Achilles and Ian all right?”
“I don’t know,” he responded. “Call her again. I will go get ready. We need to go back to Miami.” Persephone stood up from the bed and tippy-toed through the cold floor, making her way to the bathroom. Charles dialed Caroline’s phone number, again and again, anxiously waiting for her to answer.
After Caroline ended her call with Sebastian, Caroline answered Charles’ call. “What? You’ve been calling me nonstop.”
“Well, you’re the one who told me Mia was kidnapped,” Charles replied. “I don’t need your men anymore. Roxy kidnapped Mia.”
“What?”
“That bitch took my child.” Charles let out a chuckle and then said, “Caroline, please calm down and tell me what really happened.” Caroline countered, “your sister kidnapped Mia when she was at the park with Achilles and Ian.”
“Come on, Caroline. There is no way that would happen.”
“Oh, really? Then why is that bitch asking me to exchange a pocket watch for my daughter.”
“Caroline. Calm down. Take deep breaths.”
“Don’t you dare tell me to calm down, Charles. She took my child and now she will pay for it.”
“Caroline, you can’t hurt-.” Caroline hung up the call and continued to speed through the expressway in order to get to the mansion as soon as possible. She tightly gripped the wheel, remembering Roxy’s words and tone while talking on the phone. She continued speeding while hearing the sound of her ringing phone in the background.
She was about to get into a car accident when the maddening ringtone brought her back from her thoughts. Caroline took a deep breath as she slowed down. She lowered the window and grabbed her cellphone. She threw the cellphone out the window and got on the exit lane to get off the highway.
When Caroline arrived at the mansion, she swung the giant door open and hurried to her bedroom. She opened the door to her bedroom and walked over to her closet. She opened the hidden safe in her closet and grabbed the aureate chest. She closed the safe and hurried back to the entrance of the mansion.
As Caroline was walking out of the mansion, Ian ran up to her and hugged her leg. She looked down at the little boy clinging to her leg and felt her heartbreak into a million pieces seeing her little boy with a worried expression on his face and tears streaming down his cheeks. “Mommy, find Mia.”
Caroline placed her hand over his head as she assured him, “I will bring Mia back. Don’t worry my little angel.” She showed him a reassuring smile, making him let go of her leg. Ian wiped the tears that kept running down his face as Caroline hurried to her Mercedes-Benz.
When Caroline arrived at the location she had searched for before throwing her smartphone out the window, she got off the car and sprinted around the port, trying to find Roxy amongst the giant containers that stood parallel from each other.
Through the labyrinth of containers, Sebastian and Liam were looking around for Mia and Caroline. They went separate ways to cover more ground. As Liam looked around the tall wall created by the containers, the blazing sun shining above him, he heard a high-pitched scream coming from one of the containers nearby.
He hurried to the container while grabbing the pistol he kept on him. He slowly peeked inside the container and found a man dressed in black tightly holding Mia’s arm while covering her mouth with his hand.
“Hey!” Liam shouted as he stepped inside the container. “Let go of her,” he added as he pointed the gun at the man. The man reluctantly let go of Mia and she sprinted towards Liam. Liam crouched down and embraced the little girl in his arms. “Cover your ears,” he whispered as he continued to aim the pistol at Mia’s kidnapper.
Mia obediently covered her ears as Liam held her head to his chest, ensuring that she would not turn her head. Liam fired the gun, making the bullet pierce through the man’s flesh, puncturing his heart.
Liam stood up while carrying Mia. He rested the gun back on the hem of his pants before placing his large hand over Mia’s head once more. He held her head to his chest again as she tightly held onto him.
He hurried to the car, hoping to find Caroline nearby. He walked closer to Marcus while holding the teary-eyed girl in his arms. “Daddy,” she softly voiced. “Don’t worry, Mia. Daddy’s here with you.” Liam caressed her cheek and then added, “Marcus will take you home, okay?”
Mia shook her head. “No. I want mommy. I don’t want you to leave me.” Liam slightly frowned and gently spoke, “I know, Mia. My little light.” He wore a reassuring smile and added, “I will go find mommy and bring her home, but you have to leave with Marcus first. He will take care of you.”
Marcus then opened the back door of the car and Liam sat her on the backseat. He buckled her seatbelt and pressed a peck against her forehead. “Don’t cry, my little light.” Liam wiped away her tears and pressed another peck against her forehead before standing up. He closed the car door and looked at Marcus. “Take her to my house and call the doctor… If anything happens to her, you are dead.”
“Yes, boss,” Marcus responded, swallowing his fear and anxiousness. “Have some men clean up the blue container over there.” Marcus nodded before fetching his cellphone from his pocket. He made a quick phone call and got in the car. Liam watched Marcus drive off as he dialed Sebastian’s cellphone.
After running around the port filled with giant containers, Caroline found the door to one of the warehouses open; she sprinted towards it. She ran inside the building and found Roxy sitting, legs crossed, waiting for her to arrive. “Took you long enough,” Roxy spoke.
“Where is she?” Caroline exclaimed. “You mean your daughter? She is here. Well, not here, here. She is out there in one of the containers… If you give me what I want, I’ll tell you where she is.”
“You bitch!” Caroline exclaimed as she stepped closer to Roxy. “I wouldn’t overreact if I were you. After all, you still don’t know where your little brat is.” Caroline stopped in her tracks and glared at Roxy. “If you want to know where your kid is, just hand over the pocket watch.”
Caroline looked down at the aureate-colored chest she tightly held in her arm. “Roxy, please don’t do this. We are my family. Hell, we are like sisters. If you tell me where Mia is, I will forgive you.” Roxy laughed hysterically. “Forgiveness? I don’t need your forgiveness. The only thing I want from you is the pocket watch you took from me.”
“What? What are you talking about?”
“That pocket watch was mine. And you took it from me. Just like every single thing I want you have taken from me.”
“I have never taken anything from you, Roxy.” Roxy scoffed. “You took Maximo from me.”
“You mean the scumbag you were going to marry? Roxy, he was cheating on you. He didn’t deserve you-.”
“That wasn’t for you to decide.”
“Are you serious right now? I don’t know what twisted mindset you have going on right now in order to excuse your actions, but this is not you. I didn’t make Vincent dispose of Maximo because I wanted to take him from you. All I wanted was to protect you and this is how you are reacting? You are victimizing yourself just so you can pull a pity stunt to get the pocket watch? And for what? All of this just to ruin the bond we have? Why do you want a pocket watch that leads to nothing? For the stupid fairytale of having a treasure that doesn’t belong to you.”
Roxy stood up from the chair as she chuckled. “There is more to that treasure than you know.”
“Does it look like I care? Do you seriously think I wanted this stupid pocket watch? I could have happily handed it to you if you would have asked nicely.”
“See? This is what you always do. You have everything you want. Even if you don’t ask for it, everything is handed to you.” Caroline chuckled. “Roxy, everything I have, I’ve worked hard for. Everything I possess has come with a price. This stupid watch cost us our relationship. Your ridiculous desire for this pocket watch broke us apart-.”
Roxy pulled out a pistol she kept on her back, being held by the hem of her pants, and aimed it at Caroline. She stopped talking and took a few steps back when Roxy pointed the gun at her.
