- Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 It Doesn’t Suit You
Sitting in her office, Caroline was remembering what happened with Roxy. “I guess she really did go into hiding.” Caroline stood up from her desk and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. She overlooked the city from the tall building as she wondered where Roxy could possibly be.
As Caroline was lost in thought, Joseph knocked on the door, bringing her back from her thoughts. Caroline turned around and spoke, “come in.” Joseph opened the door and walked inside her office. “Ms. King,” he said before making a pause.
“Has everything been taken care of?”
“Yes, Ms. King. Mr. Sabbatini made sure everything was taken care of.”
“Did he take my bag?” Joseph nodded. Caroline rolled her eyes as she said, “of course he did.” Caroline walked over to her desk and took a seat. “You may leave now.”
“Ms. King, one more thing.”
“What is it?” Joseph cleared his throat and looked at the envelope in his hands. “I wasn’t sure if I should give you this, but Mr. Sabbatini asked me to give this to you.” Joseph slowly handed Caroline the eburnean envelope.
Once Caroline grabbed the envelope, she opened it. “Is this fucker really giving me a wedding invitation?” Caroline laughed before placing the invitation on her desk. Once she had her laugh she spoke, “fine. RSVP to his wedding.”
“Yes, Ms. King.” Joseph bowed his head and made his way towards the door. He opened the door and walked out of Caroline’s office. Caroline smirked as she looked at the wedding invitation in front of her. “If you want me to attend your wedding that badly, fine. I’ll attend… I’d love to see your miserable expression once you’re married to her.”
Once the sun had set and Caroline was ready to leave her office, the door opened. She instantly looked to see who had walked inside her office without knocking. She rolled her eyes after seeing who it was. “What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be elsewhere making wedding preparations?”
Liam said nothing. “I got your invitation, by the way. I’ll give you my response… I’ll attend.”
“Does it really not bother you me marrying another woman?”
“No, not at all. It’s your life after all. That has nothing to do with me. I have moved on.”
“Lair.”
“I’m not lying.”
“Fine look at me in the eyes and tell me that you have moved on. Tell me that you don’t wish to be with me. Tell me that you don’t desire me.” Caroline stood up and stepped closer to him. She looked at him dead in the eyes. “I’m not lying,” she spoke with confidence.
Liam grabbed her hand and started dragging her out of her office. “What are you doing?” She exclaimed as she pulled back on her arm. “Are you going to walk or should I carry you?” Caroline glared at him without responding. He stepped closer to her and was about to pick her up when she said, “I’ll walk. I’ll walk.”
Caroline pulled her hand from Liam’s grip and walked out of her office, making her way to the elevator. Caroline walked inside the elevator and pressed the button for the elevator doors to close.
When the doors were about to close, Liam extended his arm, making the doors open once again. He went inside the elevator and looked at Caroline. “Why are you avoiding me?”
“Why are you here?” They remained silent until the elevator doors closed. Waiting for the elevator to go down, Liam grew impatient and looked over at the buttons on the side of the elevator. He gave Caroline a quick glance before pressing the button to the lobby of the building.
When the elevator arrived, Caroline walked out and said, “I know I won’t be getting rid of you any time soon, so where are we going?”
“You will see.” Liam stepped closer to Caroline and grabbed her hand as he continued to walk towards the entrance. Liam led her to his black Rolls Royce and opened the door for her. Caroline got in the car and Liam closed the door. After leaving Caroline’s company, they arrived at their destination. Caroline looked out the window before looking at Liam.
He smiled and got off the Rolls Royce. He walked over to Caroline’s door and opened it. He extended his hand, helping her get out of the car. “At least you still remember the basics of being a gentleman.”
Caroline began to walk inside the building as Liam walked behind her. They went to the elevator and got in the elevator. They went to the top floor of the building without saying a word to each other, just like on the car ride.
When the elevator doors opened, Caroline slowly stepped off the elevator while staring at the astonishing view in front of her. Her eyes traveled along with the path of crimson roses in front of her. Caroline turned around to look at Liam and asked, “what is this?”
“It’s your surprise.” Caroline raised her eyebrow, giving him a skeptical look. “Why are you doing this?” Liam stepped closer to her and spoke, “I wanted to do something nice for you.”
‘Do you really want to do something nice? Then don’t marry her,’ Caroline told herself while giving Liam a cold expression. He leaned closer to her while grabbing her hand. “Ms. King, will you do me the honor of spending this beautiful night with me?” Liam brought Caroline’s hand closer to his lips and pressed a sweet peck against her hand.
Liam smiled before leading Caroline down the path made up of boxes of roses and candles in between. The beautiful, crimson path along with the candlelight led them to a table by the floor-to-ceiling window.
Liam accommodated Caroline’s chair for her. She took a seat and Liam sat in front of her. In the dim, candle-lit room they sat in silence, trying to read each other’s thoughts. A waiter walked over to their table with a bottle of wine.
As the waiter poured the wine in the wine glasses, Caroline commented, “Mr. Sabbatini, you must give all your women this sort of treatment. You seem quite experienced with all of this.” Liam let out a soft chuckle and responded, “you are mistaken, Ms. King. The only woman that I give this sort of treatment is you.”
Liam grabbed the wine glass in front of him and took a sip. Caroline’s eyes traveled from Liam’s light eyes to his hand. She stared at his ring finger, wondering how long had it been since he took his wedding ring.
A few seconds later, Caroline brought herself back to her senses and decided not to care since they had divorced. She cleared her throat and reached for the glass of wine. She took a sip and let out a slight hum at the taste of the bitter, red wine.
Caroline placed the glass of wine back on the table and asked, “why did you bring me here, Liam?”
“I just wanted to treat you to a meal.” Caroline looked around the empty restaurant before looking back at Liam. “Aren’t you getting married in a couple of days?”
“Yes, I am.” Caroline let out a sigh. “Liam, I just want you to keep in mind that I am being nice to you because we are at a restaurant, but you are making it incredibly hard for me to keep my composure.”
She tried to act tough in front of him. She refused to show weakness in front of him after all he has done. Even though it made her heart ache, she had to shut out her emotions and put up a wall to protect her fragile heart. She convinced herself that she would not get hurt because of him again. It was his turn to get hurt. It was her turn to step on him and walk all over him.
Wishing for his demise was too much to ask for. Before letting her emotions get the best of her, Caroline stood up from her chair as she grabbed her designer handbag. As she was about to walk away, Liam stood up from his chair and walked up to her. He grabbed her wrist, making her stop in her tracks.
“Don’t leave, please.” Caroline took a deep breath and stared at his deep green eyes, begging her to stay. She instantly changed her expression. She turned around and placed her hand over Liam’s cheek and have it a few pats. “Don’t act so desperate. It doesn’t suit you.”
Caroline slipped her hand from Liam’s grasp as she retrieved her hand from his face. She walked back to the table and placed her handbag back on the chair. She sat on her chair once again and looked at the man taking a seat in front of her. Caroline let out a soft chuckle thinking of how Liam was practically begging for her to stay.
Liam stared at the woman in front of him and sensed a difference in her character. Of course, Caroline has always had her temper, but not towards him, at least on usually. He could not help but frown at the thought of losing her. Being away from her for so long was enough for him to do anything to be with her, even if it meant ruining his own reputation.
After having a meal together, they made their way to Liam’s Rolls Royce. The chauffeur began to drive and Caroline uttered, “now that I’ve had dinner with you, will you take me to my house or are you going to kidnap me?”
“Kidnapping you sounds nice,” Liam responded with a smirk. Liam placed his hand and gently caressed the back of her hand with his thumb. Caroline retrieved her hand and placed her hand on her lap. “I do not fool around with men who are taken.”
Liam said nothing. He stared at her as she looked out the window. After looking out the window for some time, the car came to a stop. Caroline looked at the luxurious building in front of her and turned around. She looked at him and spoke, “why are we here?”
“I am keeping you for the night.”
“I’m not an object. I’m not yours to keep.” He let out a sigh. “I don’t understand why you are so desperate to keep me by your side. Is it because you are miserable with that plaything so you decide to make me miserable?”
“That’s right, princess. I need to make you miserable.” Caroline rolled her eyes and responded, “fine.” Liam was taken aback by her response. “If sex is what you want, then I’ll sleep with you.”
“What happened to not sleeping with men that are taken?”
“I’ve done it before. I might as well do it again. Plus, I’m willing to do some charity.” Caroline leaned closer to him and pinched his jaw, bringing his face closer. “Take this as your last night of pleasure before you spend a life of misery by her side.”
Caroline brushed her lips against his before retrieving her hand and opening the door. She got out of the luxurious car and walked towards the luxurious hotel. She made her way towards the elevator without looking back, knowing full well Liam was following behind her.
They got in the elevator and went to the top floor of the building. They made their way to the suite, where Liam opened the doors and Caroline walked inside the dimly illuminated hotel room.
Just like the restaurant, the suite was decorated with crimson roses and candles. The beautiful busy city lights illuminated below, displaying a sea of lights through the floor-to-ceiling window from one side of the suite. “I see you’ve gotten a bit more romantic,” Caroline commented, “too bad you still have that nasty temper.”
“Caroline. I’ve been trying to hold back but you’re making it difficult for me.”
“Ooh, there it is,” Caroline spoke, “somehow I find that temper… sexy.”
“Are you drunk? I told you to not drink that much.”
“On the contrary, Liam. I am completely sober. I am just done getting used by you. From now on, it’s you who will be getting used.”
