In Miami, Caroline had just walked out of the business meeting and was on her way to the elevator when her cellphone started ringing. She looked at the ringing phone in her hand and answered the phone call as she stepped inside the elevator.
She waited for the doors to close to exclaim, “why the **** weren’t you answering my calls?”
“I’m sorry, Caroline,” said the man over the phone, “but we have a problem.”
“What is it?”
“Liam might have probably taken the twins with him…”
“He what?”
“Well, you see, I brought the twins with me. And they met Liam after I told him what we talked about last night. He got mad and took the twins with him and now he is not answering my calls.” Caroline took a deep breath and said, “you are the most incompetent man I have ever met in my life. Even Mason is more competent than you.”
“Caroline, I didn’t call you for you to insult me.” Caroline stepped off the elevator and walked to her office as she said, “well, I didn’t tell you to go to Liam’s wedding to mess up this badly. Yet here we are.”
Caroline walked inside her office and closed the door. She took a deep breath and said, “coño de la madre, Charles. How could you let this happen?”
“I did everything with the best intentions, so don’t get mad.”
“Of course, I can’t get mad when I am already mad!”
“Do you want me to tell you what happened or do you want to calm down first?”
“Just tell me what happened if you elongate this any longer, I might stop considering killing you and actually kill you.”
“Right, sorry. So, I took the twins to Liam’s wedding.”
“You were not supposed to do that. You were not even supposed to take the twins there without me.”
“I know, but I just thought it was the best thing to do-.”
“Charles, you must stop getting involved in my relationship with Liam. I know I may bring you in for small favors because I never thought you were going to mess up this badly.”
“I know, Caroline. But I just want you to be happy. We all deserve happiness and I know being a single mother, without the father of your children, the man you love, you are not happy.”
“I am perfectly fine, Charles. Get on with the story before I hang up.” Charles let out a deep breath and continued, “I told Liam everything. I handed him the documents and when he knew everything, he grabbed the twins and left… Caroline, do the twins like Liam enough to voluntarily go with him?”
Caroline thought for a moment and let out a sigh. “They know he is their father. I told them once; I didn’t think much of it because they pretended like they didn’t know he was their father after that. They would just call him ‘uncle’.”
“I see. Well, now that you know everything, why don’t you try calling Liam?”
“I am flying over there. I will be taking the company jet. You better disappear before I get there.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Charles spoke before hanging up the call. He wiped away the cold sweat on his forehead and continued to dial Liam’s phone number. He walked out to New York’s busy street and hailed a cab.
When Caroline arrived in New York, she went straight to Liam’s penthouse. She dialed his phone number, but he never responded. She got off the car and entered the skyscraper. She walked through the lobby of the building and got in the elevator as the bellman led her to the penthouse of the building.
When the elevator doors opened, Caroline stepped inside the dark penthouse, looking for the light switch. She flipped the light switch, illuminating the entrance of the penthouse. She walked around the penthouse, turning on all the lights as she looked for any signs of Liam or the twins.
She dialed Liam’s phone number one last time, but once again, she was taken to voicemail. She let out a sigh and looked around the penthouse. “It doesn’t look like they were here.”
Caroline turned off the lights of the penthouse and left. She got back in the car with her chauffeur and went to her penthouse. She looked out the window, wondering where her little children could be. “My little angels,” she whispered.
When Caroline arrived at her penthouse, she sat in the living room wondering where the twins could possibly be. She grabbed her cellphone, which was resting on top of the coffee table in front of her, and dialed Charles’ phone number.
“Caroline? Did you find the twins? Are you no longer mad at me?”
“No and no. I was just calling to ask you if Mia was wearing her earrings.”
“What earrings?” After a pause, Charles added, “oh. I’m not sure. I think so.” Without saying anything else, Caroline hung up the call. She opened a tracking application she had developed after Mia’s incident.
Hoping Mia was wearing the earrings she could track through the application. Once the location loaded, she found Mia’s exact location. “The Hamptons, huh? Don’t you have anywhere better to hide, Liam?”
Caroline finished the last sip of the wine she was drinking and let out a sigh. “It’s sad I have to take such precautions and go to such lengths to ensure my children’s safety.” Caroline grabbed the bottle of wine and poured some wine into her wine glass.
She took a sip before standing up from the couch. She walked towards the stairs as she thought, ‘Liam, you are lucky I am too tired to pick a fight with you right now.’ Although that might have been one of the main reasons, she let Liam enjoy this time with the twins, she knew they would be safe with him.
Caroline slept through the whole night and morning after drinking two and a half bottles of wine. She was also going to sleep through the afternoon if it weren’t for the maddening sunlight coming from the floor to ceiling window.
She grabbed the pillow beside her and placed it over her face, but it was too late for her to recover her sleep. She threw the pillow to the side and got up from the bed. She went to the bathroom and opened the medicine cabinet, looking for some pills that would help her get rid of her headache.
After Caroline took a shower, she went to her closet. She picked out an outfit and got dressed after doing her makeup. She threw an eburnean wool-felt coat over her shoulders and left her penthouse.
When she arrived at Liam’s company, she walked inside the lobby as if she owned the place. She walked to the elevator and went to the top floor of the building. When the elevator arrived at the floor, she walked out of the elevator.
Caroline walked past the secretary division and made her way inside Liam’s office. Liam, who was concentrated on the documents he was reading, looked up to see who had barged inside his office without his permission.
Caroline closed the door and took off her dark designer sunglasses. She walked to the couch and took off her coat. She laid her coat on the couch along with her glasses and walked closer to Liam’s desk.
“Give me my children back.” Liam placed down the documents he was reading and looked up at her. “Why would I do that?”
“Because I am their mother.” Liam stood up from the chair and walked closer to her. He stepped in front of her, but she backed away. “So? You’ve kept them from me all these years. You reap what you sow, Caroline.”
“You have no right taking all high and mighty when you have never been part of their lives.”
“And who’s fault is that? You were the one who kept quiet about the twins all this time. This is your fault, Caroline. You brought this upon yourself. This is your punishment.”
“Liam, I have endured a lot of your bullshit, but I will not tolerate this. I will not let you take my children away from me. I will not let you do whatever you like. Not with my children.” Liam grabbed her hand, taking her by surprise.
He placed her hand closer to his lips and said, “if you want to protect your children, leave.”
“What?”
“You heard me… Go back to Miami. I will return them to you whenever I feel like it. For now, I want you far away from me.” He pressed a peck against the back of her hand. He looked at her with a smirk as he let go of her hand.
Overpowered by her rage, Caroline raised her hand and harshly slapped him. The sound echoed in the spacious office. Caroline stood paralyzed for a second, lost in Liam’s eyes, which were filled with fury.
He grabbed her wrist and pulled her closer to him before pushing her down to his desk. Caroline bent over Liam’s desk as he grabbed her left wrist and pinned it behind her back. He pressed himself against her as he leaned down on top of her.
He pinned her hand over her head as he placed his lips against her neck. He trailed his lips to her ear and whispered, “I’ve already told you to leave. If you want to see the twins again, you better listen to me.”
Caroline struggled to get free, but he just tightened his grip. “Leave now before you anger me even more.” Ignoring his warning, Caroline tried to set herself free once again. Liam gripped harder on her wrist before letting go of her wrist. He reached inside his pocket, looking for Mia’s earrings.
Liam placed Mia’s gold earrings along with Ian’s thin gold bracelet in front of her. Caroline stared at the jewelry as Liam whispered, “now, be a good girl, take your things and leave.”
He let go of her other wrist and stood back up. He walked over to the door and stepped out of the office. Caroline stood up and wiped the tears streaming down her eyes. She grabbed the twins’ jewelry and walked over to the couch.
She put on her oversized wool-felt coat and placed the jewelry inside the pocket. She put on her dark designer sunglasses before walking out of Liam’s office. She walked to the elevator and pressed the button. As she waited for the elevator, she called her assistant.
When Caroline arrived at the airport, the private jet was ready to depart. The chauffeur got off the car and went to Caroline’s door. He opened the door and Caroline got off the car. She took a final puff of the cigarette she was smoking and threw it on the floor.
She stepped on the cigarette butt as she made her way to the private jet. Caroline walked past the stewardess greeting her and walked up the steps, making her way inside the private jet. The stewardess walked behind her and closed the door.
Caroline made her way to a seat and sat down, placing her designer handbag on the seat next to her. As the private jet left the ground, Caroline looked out the window watching as the ground grew further.
She remembered what had just happened with Liam as she spoke, “if he wants to be the twins’ father that bad, fine. I’ll let him play father for now.”
After Caroline left Liam’s company, Liam walked back inside his office. He stepped closer to his desk and took a seat. He looked around the desk, noticing Caroline had taken the twins’ jewelry with her.
He placed his elbow on top of the desk and rubbed his aching temples. He let out a sigh before uttering, “why were you crying, Caroline? I would never hurt you or the twins, so why did you look at me like that?”
