In Miami, Charles and Persephone went out to have lunch together. They were enjoying their meal when a woman walked over to them. “Chuck?” Said the woman. Charles looked up and to the side, making eye contact with the woman.
“Veronica?” Charles asked as he stood up from his chair. He hugged the woman after greeting each other with a peck on the cheek. “What are you doing here?” Veronica asked. “I should be asking you the same thing,” Charles responded.
Charles looked at Persephone and said, “Blondie, this is Veronica, an old friend.”
“Old friend? Come on, Chuck you don’t have to be so cold to me in front of your friend.” Persephone stood up from her chair as Charles said, “no, she is my-.” Persephone interrupted him placing her hand in front of Veronica. “I am his fiancée. Nice to meet you.”
Veronica shook Persephone’s hand with an awkward smile. “Oh, congratulations. I can see why he proposed. You are so pretty.” Persephone smiled and responded, “thank you.” Veronica looked at Charles and said, “it was nice seeing you again after all these years. Hopefully, we see each other again. Maybe we can catch up.”
She looked down at her watch and said, “I am meeting a friend, but it was great meeting you.” She looked at Charles and said, “let’s catch up some time, Chuck.”
“All right, Veronica. It was great seeing you.” Veronica walked away and Charles and Persephone sat back down. “You better not meet with her,” Persephone commanded. “What, why?”
Persephone reached inside the sleeve of her blazer and took out the evil eye bracelet that had broken as Veronica complimented her. She held out the bracelet for Charles to see and placed it on top of the table.
“What is that?”
“She broke my evil eye bracelet.”
“What? How? She didn’t even touch it.” Persephone rolled her eyes and said, “this bracelet was like a shield against negative energy.” Not understanding what Persephone just said, Charles just nodded and pretended like he understood what she had just said.
After having lunch together, Charles drove Persephone to her job. He dropped her off at the entrance of the building and he went on with his day. After Persephone got off work, she went to pick up Achilles at soccer practice.
She went to Elizabeth’s mansion to visit Caroline and the twins. She drove all the way to the mansion while singing the songs on the radio along with Achilles. When they arrived at the mansion, Persephone parked her Mercedes Benz in the driveway. She got off the SUV and opened Achilles’ door. She helped the little boy out of the SUV and they walked towards the entrance of the mansion while holding hands.
After Persephone and Achilles entered the mansion, the butler led them to the living room. “Where is Caroline?” Persephone asked. “Ms. King is in her study.” Persephone crouched down to be at eye level with Achilles as said, “why don’t you go play with the twins in the playroom?”
Achilles nodded and ran to the playroom as Persephone made her way to Caroline’s study. She knocked on the door frame before stepping inside the study, making Caroline look up at the woman stepping closer. “Drowning yourself in work again?”
Caroline chuckled and said, “it’s just a few things I have to take care of.” Persephone stood next to Caroline before sitting on her lap. She wrapped her arm around Caroline’s neck as Achilles barged inside the study in a hurry.
“Aunt Caroline, mommy. The twins are not here.” Persephone looked at Caroline and asked, “the twins are not here?”
“They are with Liam.”
“What?” Persephone exclaimed. “You can thank your boyfriend for that. He practically handed them over to Liam in a silver platter.”
“He did what?” Persephone let out a sigh and hugged Caroline. “I’m sorry, Caroline.”
“It’s fine, Sephie. I will get them back in no time… Now, what is it that you wanted to tell me?” Persephone stood up from the chair and walked over to Achilles. She picked him up and said, “why don’t we go to the kitchen and find you something to eat?”
“Mommy, who is Liam?”
“Liam? Well, Liam is…” Persephone walked out of Caroline’s study as she explained to Achilles why the twins were with Liam. Caroline chuckled as she looked back down at the documents on top of her desk.
When Persephone walked back inside Caroline’s study, holding a dry martini in each hand. She walked over to Caroline and placed her martini in front of her. Persephone leaned against the desk and took a sip of her martini.
“Tell me about Veronica.” Caroline placed down the document she was reading and looked up at Persephone. “Who?” Caroline asked. “Veronica. Charles’ old friend.”
“Veronica…” Caroline thought for a moment and then said, “oh, I remember.”
“Okay. Tell me.”
“Do you want the harsh truth or white lies?”
“Of course, I want the truth, so spit it out.” Caroline grabbed her martini and took a sip. “You asked for it,” she said after taking a sip of the clear alcoholic drink. She placed her drink back on the table and spoke, “Veronica was Charles’ first girlfriend. His first love.”
“I thought I was his first girlfriend.” Caroline shook her head. “Charles wasn’t always a player. He became like that after Veronica left him. He really loved her and she broke his heart. They had been together for four years. They started dating in high school. Freshman year… Why are you suddenly asking about her?”
“I met her today. She walked up to Charles when we were having lunch. They seemed happy to see each other. It’s kind of hard to believe she broke his heart.”
“Well, it has been a long time since then. Maybe Charles got over it.”
“But why were you making it seem like their breakup was a big deal?”
“Because she really did hurt Charles. I chased that bitch out of our lives a long time ago. I guess if she can’t make herself disappear, I must do it by force.” Caroline looked at Persephone and said, “don’t give me that face, Sephie.”
“What did she do exactly to make you so mad?”
“To everyone, she left Charles without saying a word and moved to another country,” Caroline explained, “but I was the reason why she left him. I forced her to leave without saying a word.”
“Why would you do that?”
“At the time I needed to prove Victor I was better than him. I needed him to know I could take care of my family’s affairs without making a big deal out of it. I thought her sudden disappearance would be best for everyone. I figured that if Charles were to find out the truth, he would either make a scene or not believe me, so it was best to keep him in the dark.”
“Caroline, what did you do?”
“Me? Nothing. It was Veronica. She cheated on Charles with Victor. I walked in on them having sex at the company. I guess that disgusting bastard thought it was okay to sleep with her since she was of age.”
“What?”
“She was nineteen. Charles was eighteen. They were fresh out of high school. And I was seventeen. All of that happened before I decided to leave Victor’s company.” Persephone drank the final sip of her martini and commented, “your family is a mess.”
“Well, what can you expect from a man who had two children with two different women at the same time. Did I ever tell you he told my mom he wanted the three of them to live together? He said he only wanted the best for his children and growing up together would be best because we would grow up, picking up the best quality from each mother.”
Persephone scoffed. “I can’t believe he did that.” Caroline responded, “well, I can.” Caroline picked up her martini glass and took a sip. She placed her hand on Persephone’s arm and asked, “what’s wrong?” Persephone answered, “nothing. Charles was supposed to call me a while ago, but I haven’t even heard from him.”
At the same time, Persephone went to the mansion, Charles went out for drinks with his friends after work. They went to a famous bar after Charles offered to pay for the drinks. At a hotel owned by Caroline, the men were enjoying the football game projected by the large screen.
Charles had finished his drink and decided to go to the bar to ask for another one. He went to the bar and took a seat. After asking the bartender for another drink, the light touch of a woman’s hand brushed against his shoulder.
Charles looked to the side and made eye contact with the brunette woman as she spoke, “what a coincidence. We meet again.” Charles let out a chuckle and she took a seat next to him. Veronica looked at the bartender and said, “I’ll have whatever he’s having.”
The bartender nodded and proceeded to make another drink. “What brings you here, Veronica? What have you been up to all these years?”
“Not much. Just traveling. I have never been one to spend too much in one place. What about you?”
“I joined the army as my father wanted. I went up the ranks pretty quickly because of him.” The bartender placed the drinks in front of them as Charles asked, “what brings you to Miami?”
“I had never visited, so I thought I’d take a trip down here. I need to take a break from all the snow.”
“Are you still living in New York?” Veronica giggled and responded, “no, I live in Toronto now. I don’t spend much time there when I’m traveling, but I always find myself going back there… What about you? Why are you here in Miami?”
“My fiancée is here.”
“Oh, right. The woman from today. It’s good to see that you have found someone. You look very happy.”
“I am,” Charles responded. Charles took a sip of his drink as Veronica reached into her handbag. She took out a small glass bottle she had in her small bag. She opened the bottle and placed two tablets in her drink.
The drink in her glass began to fizz and Charles asked, “what is that?”
“An Alka Seltzer. It helps me hold my liquor and it doesn’t give me a headache the next day.”
“You’ve always been a terrible drinker.” Veronica laughed and said, “do you want to try it?” She placed her drink in front of him and added, “you can have this one.”
Veronica grabbed Charles’ drink and threw two tablets and watched the drink fizz. She grabbed the glass and clicked the glass with the one she had given to Charles and said, “cheers.” She took a sip of the drink, waiting for Charles to take a sip of his drink.
She placed her drink on top of the counter and watched Charles take a sip of his drink. She placed her hand under Charles’ glass, making him finish his drink in one sip. “You’ve always been good at drinking.”
Veronica grabbed the glass in front of her and hand it to Charles. “I came here with the intention of drinking with my friends, but they ditched me. I drove here and I can’t really drive while I’m drunk.”
“I thought the Alka Seltzer helped you hold your liquor.”
“It does, but it does help me when I’m drinking a lot, but it doesn’t help at keeping me sober.” Charles gave her a skeptical look and took a sip from the drink she placed in front of him.
As he drank the alcoholic drink, Veronica placed her hand on his shoulder once again and said, “I’m glad I was able to meet you again, Chuck. I thought I was never going to see you again.”
Charles placed the drink back on the counter and grabbed her wrist. He took her hand off his shoulder and said, “you were the one who left without saying a word.”
“But that was a long time ago and I regret doing that every single day of my life.”
“Why did you leave?”
“I thought it was for the best, but now I realize I should have never left your side.”
“Well, it is too late now. All you can do now is move on.”
“Like you have?”
“Yes, Veronica. I moved on and you should too.”
“What if I don’t want to move on? What if I want us to go back together?”
“That-.” Charles shut his eyes and placed his hands on his aching temples as he tried to relieve his dizziness. He looked back at Veronica as his eyes began to fall shut. Watching Charles’ eyes begin to fall shut as he tried to fight it, Veronica grabbed her credit card from her handbag and gave it to the bartender.
When she received her credit card back, she stood up from the chair and said, “Chuck, I think you’re drunk. Why don’t we go for a walk so you sober up?” Charles stood up from the chair and almost fell, but Veronica placed his arm over her shoulder.
After Veronica walked out of the bar with Charles, she went to the elevator of the hotel. She pressed the button to the fortieth floor of the building and watched the doors of the elevator close.
When they arrived on the floor, Veronica took Charles to her hotel room. She opened the door of the room with the key card and walked inside the room. She took Charles to the bed and let him lie on the bed. “You are too naïve, Chuck. Anyone would have their way with you and you wouldn’t even notice.”
