Persephone looked at the bartender and said, “two more please.” Caroline grabbed Persephone’s hand and said, “no, that’s enough.”
“No, it’s not. I need more alcohol.” Tears began streaming down Persephone’s face as she said, “I need to forget what I just saw.” Persephone was about to take another shot when Caroline stopped her. “If you continue, the only thing you will be forgetting is this conversation and the headache you will have tomorrow will insufferable.”
Persephone grabbed Caroline’s hand as she leaned closer. With Caroline holding on to the shot glass, Persephone took a shot after saying, “why are you nagging at me? You are not my wife.” Caroline rolled her eyes and admitted, “look, I didn’t come here to chaperone you. I came here to get you home.”
“Well, too bad, Care. I don’t plan on going anywhere.”
“Weren’t you crying an hour ago? Where did all this attitude come from?”
“You’re right, Caroline. I’m sorry.” Persephone picked up a shot glass and placed it on top of Caroline’s bottom lip. Persephone placed her other hand under Caroline’s chin and tilted her head back, forcing Caroline to drink the shot.
Persephone placed the empty glass back on the countertop and said, “let’s continue drinking.” Caroline leaned closer to her and said, “let’s go to my house. It’s not far from here and you can continue drinking there.”
Persephone smiled and stood up as Caroline handed the bartender her credit card to the bartender. When she got her luxury card back, Caroline placed it back inside her wallet before walking out of the bar with Persephone.
They got in the Roll Royce that had been waiting for them and Caroline told him where to go. After the chauffeur drove to Caroline’s mansion, Caroline and Persephone got off the luxurious car at the same time. They closed the doors and walked inside Caroline’s home whilst holding hands.
After the incident with Roxy, Caroline had not come back to her mansion, but since she wanted to talk with Persephone without having any interruptions or her mother listening in on their conversation, she thought it was best they talked there.
Persephone made her way to the living room as Caroline fetched a bottle of wine, unable to go against her promise. When Caroline stepped back inside the living room, she stepped closer to the couch and laid two wine glasses and a bottle of wine on the glass center table.
Caroline sat next to Persephone and poured some of the wine into the wine glasses. She handed one glass to Persephone and said, “now that we’re here, you have calmed down, sobered up, will you tell me what happened?”
Persephone took a sip of her wine and stared at the floor. She then made eye contact with Caroline and let out a sigh. Caroline placed her hand on Persephone’s shoulder and said, “you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. Just know that I am here for you.”
Persephone looked at her and smiled. “Thank you, Care.” Caroline smiled back before taking a sip of her wine. Persephone grabbed Caroline’s wine glass after Caroline finished drinking and placed it on top of the center table along with hers.
Persephone slowly laid her head on Caroline’s lap. She closed her eyes as she said, “Charles cheated on me.”
“He what?” Caroline looked at Persephone’s face and watched as she opened her reddened eyes. Tears blinded Persephone’s vision as Caroline uttered, “I’ll kill him.” Persephone wiped away her tears and shook her head. “Don’t. Please don’t hurt him.”
“But I promised to break his legs if he were to break your heart.” Persephone giggled and sat up. She reached over and grabbed her wine glass. She took a sip before she fixed her gaze on the almost empty wine glass.
“When he texted me earlier, he told me to go to a hotel. When I showed up.” Persephone paused for a second before continuing, “when I showed up, I found him sleeping with Veronica.” Caroline let out a sigh and clicked her tongue.
‘How could you mess up this bad, Charles? Are you seriously going to commit the same mistake the men of our family have committed?’ Caroline thought. Caroline leaned closer to Persephone and wrapped her arms around her. She tightly embraced her best friend in her arms, trying to console her.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to break his legs? You know I would do anything for you” Persephone chuckled and answered, “no. I don’t want you getting involved.” Caroline separated from the hug, resting her hand against Persephone’s cheek. “I will respect your decision. That was just a suggestion.”
Once again, Caroline’s efforts to cheer up her best friend worked, earning Caroline another chuckle from Persephone. “Thank you for trying to cheer me up, Care. But right now, I just need something to clear my mind, forget what I witnessed, even if it’s for a few hours.”
“I understand you feel betrayed, but you are handling the situation well.” Persephone smiled and responded, “I’ve given myself enough time to cope with my feelings, just like you taught me.”
“I never taught you that,” Caroline countered, “I remember telling you about my robot-like coping system, but I never told you to put it to practice.”
“It’s okay. It’s a very efficient method. But enough about the subject.” Persephone glanced over to the wine bottle sitting on top of the glass table and added, “I have never seen you drunk.” Caroline laughed and said, “that is because I can’t get drunk. If I drink a lot I might have a light headache the next day, but that is about it.”
“After all the years I have known you and you still can’t get drunk?”
“What can I say? I just have a high tolerance.” Persephone grabbed Caroline’s wine glass from the center table and said, “well, if you really want to cheer me up, I’d like to see you drunk.” Caroline gave her a skeptical look and asked, “are you still drunk?”
“I’m not.”
“Then stop spouting nonsense.”
“Come on, Caroline.”
“It’s pretty late, Persephone. Why don’t you go have some rest? You can change into something more comfortable from my closet.” Persephone shook her head and said, “I’m not drunk.”
“Well, you should still go get some rest. Today has been a very eventful day, so go get some rest.” Caroline stood up from the couch and added, “I’ll clean up here… You go get ready for bed.” Persephone reluctantly stood up from the couch and walked over to the stairs.
Caroline looked at the empty wine glasses and sat back down. She poured some more wine into the wine glass before taking a sip. She finished the bitter, red wine in one sip. She stared at the clear wine glass and watched a wine drop run around inside the wine glass as she moved the glass around as memories of the twins filled her mind.
She grabbed the wine bottle once again and poured the remaining wine into the glass. She took another sip before whispering, “my little angels.” Caroline let out a sigh. “Mommy will do everything to get you back.”
She stared out through the glass doors in front of her as she wondered how the twins might be doing. She stood up from the couch and walked out of the outdoor lounge, taking her wine glass with her.
Caroline stepped closer to the bar as she finished drinking the wine in the wine glass. She crouched down and grabbed a bottle of whiskey. She unscrewed the cap and flicked it. She took out her cellphone from her pocket before taking a sip from the bottle.
She opened the phone app and dialed Liam’s phone number. She waited for the call to go through, but she ended up being sent to voice mail. She took another sip from the bottle before trying to call Liam’s phone number once more.
She walked towards the pool, holding her smartphone with one hand and the bottle of whiskey in her other hand. After being sent to voice mail once again, she took another sip from the bottle of whiskey.
She looked up at the full moon and let out a sigh. “Why isn’t this marico answering? He can’t possibly be busy at one in the morning.” Caroline took another sip and tried to dial Liam’s number, but she was taken straight to voice mail.
Caroline tightly gripped her phone in her hand and exclaimed while looking at the phone screen, “desgraciado!” She took another sip from the bottle and opened her messages. She walked towards a lounge chair by the pool as she typed out a message with one hand.
She took a seat on the side of the lounge chair and placed the bottle of whiskey on the ground to continue typing out the message. After she typed out the angry text, she sent the message. Then, she picked the bottle from the floor and took another sip. She stared at the bright moon shining above her as the expensive liquor poured from the bottle.
She stopped drinking from the bottle of whiskey when her cellphone began to ring. She placed the bottle next to her, resting against her leg, and answered the call. “Caroline,” said the man over the phone in his deep and raspy voice.
“So, you finally decided to return my calls? Degraciado. Give me back my children.” After a few seconds, Liam finally spoke, “Caroline, have you been drinking? You don’t sound like your usual self.” Caroline laughed and responded, “well I’m sorry for trying to act like a normal immature 25-year-old.”
“Caroline, are you drunk?” Caroline grabbed the bottle of whiskey and took one final sip. Her tone changed again and she responded, “probably, possibly, maybe.” After that, Caroline heard a sigh come from the other line.
“Caroline, you are drunk. Get some water and sober up.”
“I don’t want to. I want my children back.”
“Caroline.”
“Fine!”
“Good girl.” Caroline was taken aback for a few seconds. Then, she continued with the same attitude. “Pero listen to me, desgraciado. I will have my children back. You better enjoy this time with them because this is the last time you will be seeing them.”
“Yes, Caroline. I understand.”
“Are you mocking me?” Liam chuckled and uttered, “I’m not. I’m looking out for you, so stop drinking and go to bed. You’ve had too much fun for one night. You’ve been drinking a lot. You will have a terrible hangover tomorrow.”
Caroline took a deep breath and then said, “you’re right, Liam. I’m not acting like my usual self. Let’s talk another time.” Caroline hung up the call and powered off her cellphone. She looked at her reflection on the black screen as a teardrop fell on top of the screen.
“I’m not even drunk yet… I just want them back,” she said as tears continued to pour down her face. She stood up from the chair, holding the bottle of whiskey in her hand. She walked back to the bar and placed the empty whiskey bottle on top of the marble counter.
Caroline crouched down and looked through the selection of expensive liquor from the cabinet. She grabbed a bottle of vodka and unscrewed the cap. Once again, she flicked the cap, sending the cap of the bottle flying. She took a sip from the bottle.
She looked at the beautiful shining moon as she stepped closer to the pool again. She watched the reflection of the moon shine on the water of the pool. She looked up at the moon and watched the bright night turn dark.
A storm closed in as dark clouds formed above her. The thunders in the sky roared as she peacefully drank from the bottle of vodka. Rain began to fall as Caroline watched the water droplets hit the water in the pool.
The cold rain continued to pour and despite being drenched, Caroline was unbothered. She drank the alcoholic drink from the bottle, finding tranquility in the sound of rain. “It’s fun letting go of responsibility, stress, and maturity from time to time.” Caroline lost herself in her thought as she continued to drink.
Persephone, who was looking around the mansion for Caroline found her standing out in the rain. She instantly hurried towards Caroline. She walked in front of Caroline and reach over to grab her hand. “Caroline, what are you doing here? Let’s go inside.”
Persephone began to drag Caroline inside the mansion as she also got drenched from the rain. When they walked inside the mansion, Persephone walked to the laundry, leaving Caroline by the door. She grabbed two towels and walked to Caroline.
She placed a towel over Caroline’s shoulders and grabbed the bottle of vodka Caroline held. “Stop drinking. I should be the one drinking. I got cheated on.” Caroline looked at her and said, “go ahead. Take a sip.”
Persephone looked at the bottle before making eye contact with Caroline once again. Her eyes shifted down to Caroline’s lips before going down to her chest. Because of the rain, Caroline’s white shirt became see-through. Persephone brought the bottle of vodka closer to her lips and took a sip.
“Caroline, do you remember when you said you would do anything for me?” Caroline nodded. “Then, I’d like to remember those times we were together.” Persephone stepped closer to Caroline and wrapped her arms around her neck.
