- Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 Don’t Owe Anything
After the events that had taken place the night before, Caroline and Persephone decided to pretend as nothing happened. Despite their memory was still a bit hazy, they would remember exactly what happened soon enough.
Caroline was in her office taking care of the work she had neglected as she remembered Persephone’s face in the morning. She shook her head and set down the document she was reading.
Earlier this morning, after Persephone opened her eyes and watched the engagement ring resting on the nightstand next to her, she could hear Caroline’s heartbeat as her breath brushed against the back of her neck.
Persephone slowly removed Caroline’s hand from on top of her and slowly sat up, trying to not wake Caroline from her slumber. Caroline softly grunted as she slowly opened her eyes. She sat up and rubbed her aching temples.
“Good morning,” Persephone said. “My head is killing me,” Caroline uttered, “what the hell happened last night?” Caroline finally stopped squinting her eyes and made eye contact with Persephone.
Caroline’s eyes traveled down before meeting Persephone’s gaze. She rubbed her eyes before running her hands through her hair as she uttered, “Sephie…” Caroline met Persephone’s eyes again and asked, “I can’t remember much but we didn’t actually-.”
Persephone just nodded in silence. Caroline let out a sigh. She removed the covers and stood up from the king-sized bed as she said, “I can’t do this right now. I need an aspirin.” Caroline got up from the bed as her foot touched the cold marble floor.
Persephone watched the ***** woman make her way to the walk-in closet. When Caroline stepped back inside the room, she was wearing a blush pink silk robe. Without saying a word to the woman lying on the bed, Caroline walked out of the bedroom and made her way down the stairs.
When Caroline went back inside the bedroom, she stepped closer to the bed while holding a glass of water in her hand. She stood next to Persephone and handed her the glass of water.
“Thank you,” said Persephone before taking a sip. Caroline sat on the edge of the bed, facing Persephone. She smiled and gently laid her hand against Persephone’s cheek. “Sephie, I think we should just forget this ever happened.”
Persephone instantly looked at her. She was about to speak but Caroline added, “I know you still love him… You even put your engagement ring back on.” Persephone looked down at her hand as she continued to hold the glass of water.
Persephone placed the glass of water on top of the nightstand and uttered, “aren’t I pathetic? I found him with another woman, yet I still love him.” Caroline leaned closer and embraced her in her arms.
“You are not pathetic, Persephone. Loving him does not make you pathetic. He promised his love to you yet he cheated on you. Believing his words does not make you pathetic. Plus, the love you have for him was not going to go away by drinking and sleeping with your intoxicated friend.” Persephone closed her eyes as she let her tears stream down her cheeks.
Caroline was brought back from her thoughts by the knock on the door. She let out a sigh and said, “come in.” Joseph stepped inside Caroline’s office and spoke, “Ms. King, it’s time for the meeting.”
Caroline nodded and stood up from her chair. She grabbed her cellphone and made her way out of her office. As she passed by her assistant, Joseph spoke, “excuse me, Ms. King. Were you crying?”
Caroline looked at him and wiped away the tear that was running down her cheek. “I’m just tired,” Caroline coldly answered as she made her way to the elevator past the secretary division.
As Joseph followed behind her, he looked at secretaries in the secretary division and mouthed, “she is in a bad mood.” The secretaries nodded and instantly looked at the monitors in front of them as Caroline turned around. She looked at Joseph and said, “let’s go, assistant Young.”
When Caroline finally walked out of her meeting, she walked back to her office. On her way to her office, she looked at the notifications portrayed on her phone screen. She scrolled through her notifications and found Charles’ missed calls.
After Caroline stepped inside her office, she returned Charles’ phone calls. As soon as he picked up the phone she spoke, “why did you call me so many times? Did something happen?”
“Why do you take so long to respond?”
“I was in a meeting. Why?”
“Persephone is not picking up my call and I’m worried.” Caroline let out a sigh as she stepped closer to her chair and took a seat. She leaned back on her chair and said, “well, maybe she has a reason to be ignoring you.”
“Come on, Caroline. You are her best friend. You might know something.”
“Charles, this is really none of my business. Whatever is going on in your relationship does not concern me.”
“Ouch. Why are you being so cold?”
“Charles, I have a lot of work to take care of. I really don’t have time to fix your relationship.”
“Look, I’ve already apologized about letting Liam take the twins, so can you stop being an asshole?”
“Charles, this is not about that.”
“Then, help me out. Please. You still owe me a favor.” Caroline countered, “I really don’t owe you anything. Yes, I asked you to take the twins to New York, but you ruined everything by handing Liam the documents before he got married and you even left my children with him.”
Caroline let out another sigh as she closed her eyes. When she opened her eyes again, she added, “I will talk to Persephone. Not because I owe you anything, but because I have a guilty conscience for something I can’t even remember.”
“What?” Charles asked before Caroline hung up the phone without giving any explanation. She scrolled through her contact list on her cell phone and called Persephone’s phone number.
After Persephone answered the phone call, Caroline spoke, “Charles has been pestering me because you have been ignoring him.” Caroline heard a sigh over the phone and then she added, “I know I shouldn’t get involved, but can you at least give him a call so he stops bothering me?”
Once Persephone agreed, Caroline ended the call. She placed her phone back on top of her desk and picked up the document sitting on her desk. She was about to read the document as she tried to remember what happened last night.
She laid the document back on the desk and said, “my tolerance must have gone down. How is it possible that I can’t remember anything?” Caroline closed her eyes as she tried her best to remember what happened.
When her memories started to appear, Joseph knocked on the door. After Caroline told him to go inside her office, Joseph spoke, “Ms. King, it’s time for your next meeting.” Caroline stood up from her chair and stepped closer to him. “What’s the schedule for today?” Joseph responded, “your last meeting is at seven.” Caroline let out a sigh and walked out of her office as Joseph followed behind her.
After Persephone got off work, she called Charles’ phone number. Pretending as nothing happened, Persephone asked him out on a date. He instantly agreed. Persephone hung up the call and made a reservation at a five-star restaurant.
After Persephone made the reservation, she called Mark’s phone number. When he answered the call Persephone spoke, “hey, Mark. I know this is sudden, but can you take care of Achilles? I have a date with Charles and I don’t really want to leave him alone with the nanny at home.”
“Why don’t you ask Caroline?” Mark responded. “Caroline is busy. Besides, this is the perfect opportunity for some uncle-nephew bonding.” After a pause, Mark said, “fine. I’ll take care of your little mocoso.” Persephone instantly responded in excitement, “thank you, Mark!”
After Charles and Persephone had dinner together, they went to Persephone’s mansion. As soon as they stepped inside the mansion, Charles closed the door and grabbed Persephone’s hand before she could walk away.
Charles tugged on Persephone’s hand, pulling her closer to his body. He pinned her against the door and asked, “why are you so distant today, blondie?”
“I’m not,” she responded. Charles leaned in and passionately kissed her lips as he tugged on the silk leash, undoing the bowtie of Persephone blouse. He separated from the kiss and pressed a peck against Persephone’s neck as he unbuttoned her blouse.
“Charles, stop.” Refusing to listen to Persephone, Charles kissed her neck and continued to unbutton her blouse. “No. Stop.” Persephone placed her hands against his chest and pushed him away.
“Blondie?” Charles shifted his gaze from her eyes down to her chest and found the hickeys on her skin. “Persephone what is this?” Persephone looked to the side as she buttoned up her alabaster blouse.
“Answer me!” As soon as he raised his voice at her she glared at him. “Are you cheating on me?” Persephone scoffed and walked away, making her way to the living room. “Hey! I’m talking to you. You can’t just leave like that.”
Charles stood in front of Persephone and added, “I asked you a question.” Persephone rolled her eyes and then said, “I’m not cheating you. You’re the one who is cheating.”
“What? What the hell are you talking about?”
“Don’t act stupid. I saw you sleeping with that cheap *****.” Charles was taken aback remembering how he woke up with morning with Veronica in his arms. He then countered, trying to stand his ground, “women sure have a way to twist things and pin everything on men.”
Persephone pointed her finger at him and stepped closer to him, pressing her finger against his chest as she spoke, “I am not twisting anything, jackass. I saw you with that Πουτανα. Do you think you can just lie to me? Know your place. Μαλακα. I gave you the opportunity to tell me the truth, but you decided to hide it from me. Didn’t your mother ever teach you that lying will only come back to bite you in the ***?”
“You act like you are all high and mighty when you and I are the same. I might have cheated on you, but you are no better. At least I was more discrete about it, but you… you have proof of your infidelity on your body.”
Persephone glared at him before she uttered, “at least I am coming clean. Unlike you, coward. Yes, I did sleep with someone else, but I did it after I saw you with that cheap skank.”
“How do you even know I slept with her?” Persephone scoffed and responded, “how idiotic can you get?” Persephone reached into her pocket and fetched her smartphone. Persephone unlocked her cell phone and went to the message application. She opened her conversation with Charles and showed him the conversation.
“Here, you imbecile. You wanted proof? Here you have it. Now lower your tone because I am not that slut. If you want to scream at someone, there is the door. I will not take any shit from anyone, much less from you.”
Charles looked at the screen in front of him and uttered, “I didn’t send that message.”
“Oh. So, now you’re saying the message sent by itself? Do you think I’m stupid, Charles? If you didn’t want to be with me, you could have just told me. You didn’t have to cheat on me.”
“It seems to me you are the one that does not want to be in this relationship. Right after finding me with another woman, you go sleeping around fucking the first thing that appears in front of you. The same way you slept with me four years ago after getting drunk.”
Again, Persephone pointed her finger at him. “Listen to me, Μαλακα. If you really had a problem with the way we first met then maybe you should have never proposed to me. And I did not **** the first thing that appeared in front of me. I slept with Caroline. But you… you slept with that σκυλα who cheated on you with your uncle.”
“You what? You slept with my cousin? Out of all the people you could have fucked, you slept with Caroline? What the hell is wrong with you?”
“You don’t seem that surprised to know Veronica slept with your uncle.”
“Because I know it’s a lie.”
“How can you be so sure? Have you ever wondered why she left you without saying anything? It was because Caroline caught her sleeping with Victor.”
“Of course, Caroline did,” Charles spoke in sarcasm. “With all I’m hearing, you are no better than Veronica.”
“You’re right, Charles. I am no better than that bitch, but at least I am coming clean and owning up to my actions. Yes, I slept with Caroline. In fact, I initiated it. Caroline was drunk and I seduced her.”
“We’re done here,” Charles spoke. “You know what? You’re right. We’re done.” Persephone took off her engagement ring and hit Charles’ chest as she pressed the ring against him. After he grabbed the ring, Persephone started walking away and said, “you know where the door is. You can see yourself out.”
Charles looked at the ring in his hand and frowned. He did not admit to not cheating because he still had no recognition of what happened last night. The last thing he could remember was drinking what Veronica gave him and waking up with her in his arms. But after connecting the dots, he believed it was best to keep being abused to himself.
