- Chapter 34 - Chapter 34 An Eye for an Eye
When Caroline finally arrived at her hotel in Monaco, she went to her hotel suite and threw herself on the bed. She let out a sigh and brought her cell phone, which she held in her right hand, closer to her face. She looked at the time portrayed on the screen before letting her hand fall back on the bed.
She closed her eye, trying to rest even for a second. Because she spent most of her flight sitting in front of her laptop working, she was extremely fatigued. She took a deep breath and slowly opened her eyes as she breathed out. She stood up and walked to the bathroom.
After taking a nice, relaxing, hot bath, Caroline got ready for bed. Once she tucked herself under the comfortable bedsheets and drifted off to sleep. When she woke up the next morning, she got up from the bed and got ready to go out.
After getting dressed, Caroline left the hotel suite and made her way to the restaurant in the hotel. She walked inside the restaurant and made her way to Joseph’s table. She took a seat in front of her assistant and spoke, “good morning, Joseph.”
“Good morning, Ms. King,” he responded. “Did you find the person I asked you to find?” Joseph reached over to his briefcase and opened it. He took out an onyx leather folder and handed it to Caroline.
She opened the folder and looked at the document in front of her. “Antonio Cabrera. Spaniard.” Caroline looked up from the document she was reading and commented, “it seems you were able to find someone capable enough and desperate enough in such a small period of time. Impressive.”
“Yes, Ms. King.” Caroline looked back down at the document and continued to read the information provided by Joseph. When she finished reading, she closed the folder and handed it back to Joseph. “Let’s go meet him after having breakfast.” Joseph nodded and placed the documents back inside his briefcase.
After Caroline and Joseph had breakfast, they left the restaurant. Joseph drove to the mountains and parked on the shoulder of a lonely road. Caroline rolled down the window and lit a cigarette. She placed the golden tip of the cigarette in between her lips and took a puff.
A car approached them and packed behind them. The man opened the door and got off his car. He walked closer to the Range Rover. The man opened the back door and sat on the back seat next to Caroline.
Caroline released some smoke from her mouth and spoke, “you’re late.”
“I’m sorry,” replied the man. Caroline looked at him, hiding her eyes behind her dark designer sunglasses. She then added, “you better be more punctual next time.” She took one final puff from her cigarette before throwing the cigarette butt out the window.
She rolled up the window and looked at the young man sitting next to her. She looked over at the briefcase sitting by the man’s feet and said, “that is for you.” The man reached out his hand and grabbed the briefcase. He placed the black briefcase on top of his lap and opened it.
The man fixated his gaze on the stacks of euros that were perfectly arranged inside the briefcase before looking back a Caroline. “You will get the rest once the job is finished.”
“Yes. Thank you.” Not curious about knowing Caroline’s identity or her need for acquiring his services, the man opened the door and got off the SUV. He closed the door and walked over to his car.
Joseph looked at Caroline through the rearview mirror before placing the car on drive. He looked over at the deserted road and began to drive to their next destination. During the entire car ride, Caroline looked down at her phone screen, re-reading the messages she exchanged with the twins’ nanny. Reading about how much Liam has been caring for the twins made her smile.
When they finally arrived at the luxurious café, Joseph got off the SUV and walked to Caroline’s door. He opened her door and helped her off the SUV. “Be here in thirty minutes,” Caroline spoke before she made her way inside the café.
After Caroline walked inside the café and made her way to the tables out by the water. As she stepped outside, she found Mason and a woman sitting in front of each other. The beautiful woman giggled as she held Mason’s hand. Caroline let out a slight chuckle and made her way to a table.
After she took a seat, she picked up a menu and a waiter walked up to her. Caroline told the waiter her order, making the waiter walk away afterward. She intensely looked at the couple sitting a few feet away and eventually looked down, making her obsidian floppy hat disguise her face.
Caroline watched the couple laugh at each other’s jokes, making her roll her eyes and shift her eyes to the designer watch on her wrist. When she looked up once again, she looked around and met eyes with the waiter walking towards her.
When the waiter walked over to her table, he placed Caroline’s drink on the table before walking away. Caroline picked up the teacup in front of her and took a sip, watching the couple in front of her stand up from their seats.
Caroline looked over at one of the buildings near the café from the corner of her eyes before shifting her gaze back at the man getting on one knee. As Mason kneeled down whilst holding a jewelry box in his hands, the onlookers began to whisper, placing all of their attention upon the couple.
The woman standing in front of Mason smiled happily as she nodded “yes” to Mason’s proposal. Mason happily looked down at the diamond ring inside the jewelry box. As he took out the ring from the box, instant screams interrupted the scene following the sound of a gunshot.
Mason, who had a smile from ear to ear finally looked up with the diamond ring in his hand. Caroline wore a smirk on her face as Mason’s smile fade away. She slowly sipped her tea as she watched the people around her run away from the scene.
‘An eye for an eye, brother.’ Caroline finished sipping her tea, watching the woman’s crimson blood spread on the ground, creating a puddle of blood. Caroline stood up from the chair and calmly walked back inside the café, completely ignoring Mason’s ugly cries and the chaos going on around her.
When Caroline walked out of the café, she found Joseph waiting for her at the entrance. She walked to the Range Rover and got in the back seat. Joseph looked at her through the rearview mirror; the smile on her face gave him shivers. He shook his head, bringing himself back to his senses before driving away.
When they arrived at their destination, Joseph got off the SUV and opened the trunk. He took out a briefcase and closed the trunk. The man who was waiting for them to arrive was smoking a cigarette while looking at the vast ocean in front of him.
Joseph handed the briefcase over to the man and spoke, “this is double the amount you asked for. Thank you for your cooperation.” The man looked at the briefcase and then spoke, “tell your boss it was my pleasure doing business with her.”
Joseph gave the man one final glance before walking back to the SUV. After Joseph got on the driver’s seat and began to drive away, Caroline spoke, “is everything ready?”
“Yes, Ms. King. I have prepared everything.” Caroline looked out the window and let out a light chuckle as she remembered Mason’s expression as she took his only happiness from him. ‘You took my little Bambi from me. It’s only fair that I take something from you too.’ Once again, Joseph looked over at the rearview mirror, getting shivers before looking back at the road.
After they arrived at the airport, Joseph got off the SUV and walked to Caroline’s door. He opened the door and Caroline got off the SUV. Caroline walked down the red carpet laid out for her as per usual as she made her way to her private jet.
When Caroline stepped inside the jet, she walked over to an armchair and placed her Chanel clutch bag on top of the armchair. She took off her sheer designer gloves and placed them on top of the chair.
A stewardess walked closer to her with a glass of champagne in her hand. “Miss King.” Caroline grabbed the glass and took a seat next to the window. She took a sip of her champagne as she looked out the window. ‘My business here is done,’ she thought as she heard the door close for takeoff.
Hours later when Caroline arrived in New York, she went straight to her penthouse. It was the middle of the day and she was getting ready to go to sleep. Again, she spent the entire flight working, typing away at the keyboard of her laptop.
When nighttime rolled around, Caroline woke up from her slumber. She slowly opened her eyes as she stretched out her arms. She stood up from the bed and made her way to the bathroom. She decided to get ready to go out and get some dinner with Joseph.
After dinner, Caroline she told Joseph to take her to a bar. She told herself celebrating her vengeance was the right thing to do. When she arrived at the bar, Joseph got off the car and walked to her door. He opened the door for her and she got off the car.
After stepping inside the bar, she walked to the only empty seat by the bartender. As soon as she sat down, the man next to her ordered a drink. Hearing the familiar voice, Caroline looked to the side, making eye contact with the man next to her. “Harry?” The man smiled and spoke, “we meet again, Caroline.”
Caroline smiled and spoke, “it’s been a while. How have you been?”
“Other than burying myself in work, there is nothing new. Today, I just happen to give myself some leisure time.”
“You shouldn’t overwork yourself,” Caroline said. “Same goes for you,” Harry added after a pause, “you seem rather fatigued; have you been taking care of yourself?”
“I-.” Caroline made a pause and then she responded, “I’ve had an eventful couple of days.” Neither of them said anything else. Caroline looked down at the countertop in front of her as Harry reached out his hand.
He took a strand of her hand and tucked it behind her ear, making her shift her gaze towards him. “I’m glad I got to see you again.” Caroline let out a soft chuckle and spoke, “I’m happy to see you, too.” Caroline looked over at the bartender and ordered a drink, before looking back at Harry.
“How are the twins?” Harry asked. Caroline paused for a second before answering, “Liam has them.”
“Oh?” Harry let out. “Yes, well… I’m sure you’ve read the articles about Liam’s wedding circling all over the internet.”
“I am not interested in mere gossips… but, I must admit, I was caught off guard when I heard the news of the stunt during the wedding ceremony.” Caroline took a sip of her drink before admitting, “well, the little stunt at his wedding was partly my fault.”
After spending some time drinking and conversing, midnight was closing in. When the flow of their conversation paused for a second as Caroline took a sip of her dry martini, Harry looked at the time portrayed on the designer watch on his wrist.
He grabbed his wallet from the pocket of his suit jacket. He took out his black credit card and handed it to the bartender. When he received his card back, spoke, “it’s getting late. I apologize for holding you up so late.” He stood up from his chair and extended out his hand.
Caroline gently laid her hand on top of his and stood up from her chair. “It was great seeing you, Harry.”
“Likewise.” Caroline smiled and after a pause, Harry spoke, “Take care of yourself, all right?” Caroline nodded as she inched closer. She slowly got closer to him and wrapped her arms around him. “Thank you for listening to my troubles.”
Harry slowly placed his arms around her, embracing her in his arms. As they slowly separated from the hug, Harry spoke, “fight for your happiness.”
“You too,” Caroline responded. “I already have,” he said with a bitter smile. “Take care of yourself, Caroline.” She smiled and slowly turned around. She began to walk out of the bar, without looking back.
When Caroline arrived back at her penthouse, she slipped off her high heels and walked to her bedroom. She stepped closer to the bed and sat on the edge of the bed before leaning back against the mattress. She looked up at the ceiling and let out a sigh. “Thank you, Harry,” she whispered as she replayed their conversation in her head.
