The woman sitting in front of Persephone calmly laid her glass on the table before saying, “took you long enough to find me.”
“I would have found you faster if you wouldn’t have been hiding like a rat.” Veronica cleared her throat as she looked away, avoiding Persephone’s gaze. Veronica took a few seconds to calm herself, knowing that lashing out at Persephone would only cause a scene.
“Well, since you’ve come all the way here, would you care to tell me what is it that you want?” Veronica spoke. “I want you to tell me what happened that night.”
“Are you still on that?” Veronica let out a chuckle as she looked at the missing engagement ring on Persephone’s finger. She then added, “your fiancé or should I say ex-fiancé embraced me in his arms once again.” Without saying anything, Persephone rolled her eyes. “I’m sure you know how good he is in bed. I guess he could never forget me.”
“Aren’t you a darling,” said Persephone in sarcasm. “You could have stayed in that hole you crawled out of instead of ruining a happy family. Did you know, Veronica, Charles and I have a three-year-old son. You just ruined my child’s happiness just because you decided to weasel your way back into Charles’ life. And of course, I cannot sit back and watch my child be unhappy because his parents got separated.”
Persephone watched as her words converted Veronica’s cunning expression into guilt. Veronica clicked her tongue and then said, “I was not the cause of your failed engagement. I was only the mere factor that brought out how fragile your relationship with Charles was.”
“Even if our relationship was as fragile as you say, I will not give up. Not to you, not to anyone.” Persephone made a pause as she looked down and placed her hand on her abdomen. “I cannot allow another one of my children grow up without a father.”
Persephone looked back at Veronica, glorifying the satisfaction she felt seeing Veronica’s expression roller coaster along with her lie. After a few seconds of silence, Veronica finally spoke, “I don’t know if you are brave or just plain stupid, but I will praise your determination. I don’t think there is any woman that would fight so much to salvage their relationship.”
“I don’t need your praise. I just need you to disappear.”
“That’s a bit harsh, don’t you think?”
“Harsh? If anything, I am being rational to the woman who slept with my fiancé and ruined my engagement.” Veronica chuckled and then said, “if you are one to hold a grudge, you shouldn’t have gotten involved with a man with a past.”
“Look, σκυλα , everyone has a past. The issue is when a psycho bitch like you decides to show up out of nowhere,” Persephone responded. “Well, what is done is done. I already told, if your relationship with him wouldn’t have been so fragile, maybe he wouldn’t have chosen to be with me.”
“And maybe if you wouldn’t be spreading your legs to anything that moves, you wouldn’t have that sort of mindset.” Veronica giggled and then spoke, “I don’t understand why you like to pretend like Charles is innocent. I did not take advantage of him, so I don’t understand why you keep trying to make him the victim. He slept with me because he wanted to. You should just give up on him. He doesn’t love you. He isn’t loyal.”
“That is for me to decide. And I’ve decided to not give up on him. I will not leave him to the likes of you. I will not fall right into your trap. In fact, you should just stop with your petty schemes and lies.”
After a second of silence, a waiter walked over to the table and interrupted their catfight as he spoke, “how is everything?” The two women looked over at the man and responded with a smile, “everything is fine.” The man smiled back and walked away.
Persephone looked back at Veronica and said, “I already told you I want you to disappear. I don’t care what you say or do, I just want you as far away from us as possible. I’m already keeping tabs on you. Let’s not have another conversation like this.” Persephone stood up from the chair and gave Veronica one final glance before leaving.
Later that day, Persephone went back home. She sat in the living room with a wine glass in her hand and her iPad in her other hand. She looked over at the designs she had finished, looking to see if they needed any final touches. After meticulously looking at her designs she placed her empty wine glass on the coffee table in front of her and picked up her apple pen.
She drew lines thick and thin as she moved the pen up and down each time the tip hit the screen. She moved her hand side to side as she drew straight and squiggly lines on the screen with her pen.
She continued to draw on her iPad until the butler came by with a bottle of wine. He stood in front of Persephone and poured some wine inside the empty wine glass. “Dinner will be served soon.” Persephone picked up the wine glass as she said, “thank you.”
The butler walked away, leaving the wine bottle sitting on the coffee table. Persephone took a sip of the wine wondering when Charles and Achilles might arrive. She picked up her cellphone, which was sitting next to her, and looked through her contact list.
She was about to call Charles’ phone number when she heard the front door open. She instantly stood up from the couch and walked over to the foyer. She wore a smile on her face as she crouched down to embrace her son in her arms.
“Mommy!” exclaimed the child in excitement after seeing his mother. “My little devil,” Persephone responded as she picked up the toddler. “How did it go? Did you two have fun today?”
“Yes!” Achilles responded. “I’m glad to hear that.” Seeing the child and the woman displaying their affection, Charles cleared his throat getting their attention. “I think I should get going now.” Persephone looked over at Achilles and then asked, “why don’t you stay over for dinner?”
After hesitating for a second, Charles uttered, “sure.” Persephone smiled and stepped closer to him. “Go wash your hands with Achilles and meet me at the dining room.” Charles nodded and took Achilles from her arms.
Charles walked to the bathroom as Persephone made her way to the kitchen. After she walked inside the kitchen, she looked around the butler. “Set the table for three people,” she directed. The butler nodded and looked over at the chefs, directing them to serve three plates.
During the entire dinner, Charles and Persephone reminisced the times when they were together. They laughed as Achilles told his mother the story about what happened today at the park. They occasionally glanced at each other as they wondered where it all went wrong.
After dinner, Persephone, Charles, and Achilles made their way to the living room. Persephone picked up her iPad and her apple pen and said, “your day of fun and adventure is not over yet. You two can continue playing. There are some things I have to work on. I will be in my study if you need me.”
“Okay,” Charles responded before Persephone walked away. Charles looked at the time portrayed on the watch in his wrist before looking at Achilles. “I don’t think mommy is aware of the time.” Achilles laughed and then Charles extended out his hand. “Let’s give you a bath before it gets too late and mommy gets mad.”
Achilles giggled once again as he walked to the stairway while holding Charles’ hand. Charles took Achilles to his bedroom before walking to the bathroom. He ran the water in the bathtub and said, “let’s give you a quick bath before going to bed.”
As the water in the bathtub filled, Charles looked inside Achilles’ closet for his pajamas. After Achilles chose the pajamas he wanted to wear, Charles took Achilles to the bathroom to give him a bath. Charles helped Achilles undress and got him in the bathtub. He rolled up his sleeves to give his son a bath.
After giving Achilles a bath, Charles dressed him and made him brush his teeth. After he got him ready for bed, he took him back to the living room. They were sitting on the couch with the lights dimmed when Achilles rested his head against Charles’ arm.
Charles looked at him and let out a soft chuckle. He turned and leaned back, resting his head on the arm of the couch. Achilles inched closer to him and rested his head on his arm. “Daddy,” let out the toddler in a soft voice.
“Yes?”
“Can you tell me a bedtime story?”
“A bedtime story?” Charles thought for a moment and then uttered, “once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who lived in a beautiful castle with her prince. The princess and the prince were happy and in love. But one day, the prince was taken away from the princess. The princess became very sad and locked herself inside the castle. In order to find a replacement for her prince, the princess walked around the kingdom for the right prince. The princess searched every corner of the kingdom but instead of finding a new prince, she found her prince with another princess. The princess became very sad and angry. She ran away. She went to the forest and went into hiding. As she wandered around the forest, she found a little cottage. She knocked on the door, but no one answered. The princess waited a few more seconds before knocking again. A few more seconds later, the princess decided to go inside the little cottage.”
Charles made a small pause before continuing, “the little princess stayed alone in the cottage for ten days. When she made up her mind to never go back to the kingdom, there was a knock on the door. The princess was scared to open the door. She stood there in silence waiting for the person outside to walk away. After a few more knocks, the princess finally opened the door. When she opened the door, she found her prince standing in front of her. ‘My princess,’ said the prince as soon as he saw her, ‘I never meant to leave you. I was taken away, but now I am here.’ The princess was taken by surprise. She ran to the prince and hugged him. ‘Don’t ever leave me again,’ said the princess. ‘I will never leave you,’ responded the prince. The princess and prince returned to the kingdom and they lived happily ever after. The end.”
Persephone, who was hiding behind a wall, stepped inside the living room as soon as Charles finished telling the story. She stepped closer to him as she said, “why would you tell him such a sad story? He is going to have nightmares now.”
Charles chuckled and responded, “it wasn’t a sad story. It had a happy ending.” Persephone crossed her arms and countered, “the story was still sad.”
“Relax. He will not have any nightmares. He might have a sad dream though.”
“My point exactly. Any dream that is not a happy one is a nightmare.”
“I think you have the wrong definition of a nightmare.” They both laughed before staying in silence for a few seconds. With the little noise they made, Achilles was starting to wake up again. “I will go back to my study. Put him to sleep again,” Persephone whispered before walking away.
Thirty minutes later, when Persephone walked back to the living room, she found Achilles and Charles sleeping on the couch. She smiled as she slowly approached them. She slowly picked Achilles up and carried him in her arms.
After taking Achilles to his bedroom and tucking him into bed, Persephone went back to the living room with a blanket in her hands. She stepped closer to the man peacefully sleeping on the couch and gently laid the blanket over his body. She looked at the sleeping man’s face as she inched closer to his face. She was about to press her hand against his cheek when his hand grasped her wrist.
