- Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 We Are the Same
Caroline let out a chuckle, taking him by surprise. She stood up from the couch and walked around the living room. When she turned to face him, she uttered, “I can’t believe you. Even now, you have the audacity to make yourself look like the victim.”
“I’m not. I’m telling you this because I regret my decisions. I regret how much I’ve hurt you.”
“If you regret it so much, why didn’t you just stay away? Why did you have to keep lying to me and hurting me? Liam, I’ve said it many times already, I am not your toy. I am not some doll you can just play with when you get bored.”
Liam stood up as she spoke and walked closer to her. He gently grabbed her hands after she finished talking and confessed, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry for all the lies I’ve told. I’m sorry for the many times I hurt you. I’m sorry about everything… I know a mere apology will not make it better, but I truly am sorry.”
Caroline pulled her hands from his grasp and stepped closer to the couch. She took a seat once again and said, “you’re right; your mediocre apologies will not cut it anymore.” Caroline reached over to the center table and grabbed her glass.
She took a sip of the liquor before looking up at Liam. “I will not listen to any more of your lies, but I do want to know how being near Rebecca was the right choice.” Liam took a step forward as he tried to make his way to the couch.
“Ah,” Caroline let out, “you can tell me from over there.” Liam took a step back before taking a seat on the armchair in front of her. “Speak,” Caroline commanded as she leaned back against the couch and crossed her legs.
“It all started when Rebecca showed up four years ago. When Rebecca told Gabriella that Noah was my child, Gabriella urged me to divorce you. Gabriella told Dante the news and he threatened me.”
“This still doesn’t explain why you brought her into our lives four years ago,” Caroline interrupted. “I needed to get close to her in order to find some dirt on her. I needed solid evidence to get rid of her completely.” Once again, Caroline interrupted, but this time, her tone changed. “You couldn’t fabricate that dirt because it wouldn’t have sufficient credibility.”
“Exactly. But I was never able to get close to her.”
“Why do I feel like you are lying to me once again?”
“I’m not lying, Caroline. I was never able to get too close to her because I felt like I was betraying you.” Caroline was taken aback, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. She felt as if she stared at him long enough, she might fall for his lies once more.
She looked to the side and cleared her throat before taking a sip of her drink. When she regained her composure, she looked back at him and asked, “why did you drive me away? Why did you look for me again? Why did you humiliate me, make fun of me, and threw me away just to crawl back into my life again?”
“Love? Obsession? Hatred? Regret? There is no clear answer. At first, I thought I could drive you away and get close to Rebecca. I figured I could keep my parents in check if I did what they wanted while also finding a way to get rid of her. But then I realized I could not live without having you by my side. Without you, I was miserable. I started looking for you and then I started following you. Wherever you went, I followed. Until you vanished.”
Liam made a pause and then added, “when you appeared in front of me again, I couldn’t let you go. I had to do everything in my power to get you back, even if it meant you hating me. I just couldn’t deal with you ignoring me and moving on.”
He let out a chuckle and then said, “quite pathetic if you think about it.” Caroline sat up and spoke, “so, that’s why you did all the shit you did. You were not toying with me. You just couldn’t bear to live such a miserable life, so you chose to make me miserable. That is not pathetic. That is selfish. I was completely fine pretending to have moved on from you. My life was going great despite the constant reminder that the man I fell for was a complete asshole who was only toying with me.”
Caroline let out a soft laugh and then said, “I guess I shouldn’t feel that bad. I was not the only one you toyed with, after all.” Knowing she was referring to Rebecca, Liam said, “you are not that innocent either,” as he tried to defend his actions by relating to her.
“You’re right. I did use Harry one too many times. We are the same. We use people in order to protect ourselves, but who can we blame? It was the world that made us this way.” Thinking of all the ways Liam relates to her, she spoke, “Maybe we’re too similar for our own good.”
Caroline stood up from the couch and grabbed Liam’s glass sitting on the table with her other hand. She stepped closer to him and handed him his glass. She clinked her glass with his before taking a seat on the arm of the chair.
After Caroline and Liam spent a few hours conversing. They were sitting back on the couch when they had finished one conversation. In a moment of silence, Liam poured more whiskey into their glasses.
“Liam,” Caroline voiced, “if you were planning on getting back together, why did you divorce me in the first place? Why did you finally sign the divorce papers after being married for four years?”
Liam looked at her and responded, “I divorced you because that is what you wanted… I never wanted to divorce you. I never wanted to be away from you. I thought it was best if I ended that contract. Our marriage was not a normal one. It was a contract you were forced to sign, which is why I realized that I needed to divorce you in order to pursue you properly.”
Liam looked at the watch on his wrist before looking back at her. She was about to take a sip of her drink when he placed his hand on top of the glass. He took the glass from her hand and said, “it’s getting late. Let’s leave the drinking for tomorrow.”
He stood up from the couch and walked to the bar with the two glasses in his hands. He left the two glasses sitting on the countertop of the home bar before walking back to the couch. He placed his hand in front of Caroline and waited for her to lay her hand on top of his.
He helped her up and guided her to his bedroom. When they entered the bedroom, he closed the door as she looked around the room seeing how it was just like it was four years ago. She looked over at what she thought used to be her closet but decided to not get her hopes up and turned away.
Liam walked closer to her and grabbed her hand again. He led her to the doors on the right side of the wall and stood there, waiting for her to open the doors. Seeing how she stood there in confusion, Liam let go of her hand and placed his hands on the door handles. He turned the door handles and opened the doors, leading to Caroline’s closet.
As soon as the doors opened, Caroline found her closet, preserved just the way she left it four years ago. “Change into something else and then go to sleep.” Caroline stopped looking around the closet and turned back to look at him.
“Where are you going to sleep?”
“In the other room,” he responded. “You don’t have to. You can just sleep here.” Liam stepped closer to her and gently grabbed her hands. He leaned down a pressed a sweet kiss against her forehead. “Get some sleep,” he whispered.
He let go of her hands and slowly turned back. He walked away without saying another word. Caroline turned back to the clothes in the closet, but could not find something to wear. She walked out of her closet and made her way to Liam’s closet. She looked through his collection of shirts before undressing.
After she undressed, she grabbed one of the shirts hanging up in the closet and put it on. She smiled as she smelled Liam’s scent on his shirt. After getting ready for bed, Caroline finally tucked herself in Liam’s king-sized bed and drifted off to sleep.
When Liam came back into the room, he found Caroline peacefully sleeping on his bed. He smiled and stepped closer to her. He leaned down and let out a soft chuckle after seeing her wearing his shirt. He pressed a peck on her cheek as he gripped the bed covers and covered her with it, so she would not feel cold.
After Liam got ready for bed, he sat on the edge of the bed and watched her sleep. He focused on the way her chest would rise and fall each time she breathed in and out. He smiled after seeing how angelic she looked while sleeping.
He was about to stand up from the bed to let her sleep when she suddenly grabbed his arm. Without opening her eyes, Caroline mumbled. “don’t go. Stay.” He got in bed with her and held her in his arms. She pressed her forehead against his chest, seeking the warmth from his body.
The next day, Caroline, Liam, and the twins were enjoying their breakfast in the dining room. The twins were peacefully eating their meal as Caroline talked with Liam. “I will be returning to Miami today… I’m talking the twins with me,” she commented before taking a sip from her mimosa.
“I’ll drop you off at the airport,” Liam responded, catching her by surprise and almost making her choke on her drink. Seeing her surprised expression, he chuckled. He gently laid his hand on top of hers and added, “after talking to you yesterday, I realized that they should be with you for now. When I win back your heart, I will make sure to be the father they deserve.” He smiled, making her smile back.
After breakfast, Liam took them to the airport as he promised. After parking next to the private jet, he got off the car and opened the back door. He unbuckled Mia’s seatbelt and picked her up as Caroline got off the car. She opened Ian’s door and unbuckled his seatbelt.
She helped him out of the car and held his hand. She looked over at the stewardess standing next to the door of the plain before looking back at Liam, who was walking towards them. He crouched down and hugged the twins.
He pressed a peck on their foreheads and said, “I will come visit you soon, okay?” The twins nodded before hugging him once more. Liam stood up and looked at Caroline. “Have a safe flight.”
“Thank you,” Caroline responded. She grabbed the twins’ hands and began walking towards the private jet. As the twins were walking up the steps to go inside the jet, Caroline looked back at Liam. He smiled at her and she smiled back. Caroline looked forward again and made her way up the steps. When she entered the jet, she found the twins sitting by the window, waving goodbye at Liam.
After the plane took off, Caroline received a phone call from Charles. She answered the call and said, “hello?”
“Caroline, I wanted to ask you for a favor,” Charles spoke. “What is it?”
“Remember that port you said you bought? Are you using it?”
“Not really. Do you want it?”
“Yes,” he instantly responded. “I’ll sell it to you. I’m on my way back to Miami, so we can discuss the details then.”
“I kind of need it right now.”
“Fine. You can use it. I will send you the location.”
“Thank you, Caroline.” After that, Charles hung up the call. Caroline stared at her phone screen as she thought of the was Charles had not said a single word to her until now. In fact, it came as a shock seeing his name pop up on her phone screen.
In Miami, as soon as Charles received the location of the port from Caroline, he placed his vehicle on the drive and took his foot from the brake. He looked at the GPS on his cellphone as he reached over to the glove box.
As he drove to the location Caroline sent him, he contacted the only phone number saved in the cell phone. “I will send you an address. Make sure you bring her with you.” Charles hung up the call and looked back at the road ahead.
