As Charles arrived at the gate of the port, he saw the looking after the port. Charles drove up to the entrance and lowered his window. “Charles King?” inquired the man. “Yes,” Charles responded. The man opened the gate for him.
Charles looked at the man and said, “there is someone with me. Open the gate for them and leave right after.” The man nodded and Charles drove inside the port, following the orders given to him by Caroline’s secretary. As he entered the port, he instantly understood why Caroline had no use for the deserted place.
He made his way to the building on the east side of the port and parked his car outside. He made his way to the door on the side of the building and tried to open the door. Seeing how the door was unlocked, he effortlessly opened the door to the building.
He went inside the dark building and reached out his hand, feeling for a light switch on the wall to his left. After turning on the lights in the building. He found a chair and a table in the middle of the room.
“That’s strange,” he said, hearing his voice echo in the building. He walked over to the chair and took a seat. He continued to look around the room until he heard a sound from outside. He stood up from the chair and made his way out of the building.
The man driving the black SUV got off the vehicle and walked over to Charles. “Did the man at the gate leave?” Charles asked. “Yes,” The man responded. “Bring her in.” The man looked back at the black SUV, trying to look at the men through the tinted window, and made a gesture to go inside the building.
Charles walked back inside the building, waiting for the men to step inside. When the men brought in the woman, who gave up putting up a fight, they walked closer to Charles and let her down on the concrete floor.
Charles stepped forward and took the cloth bag off the woman’s head. The woman whined as the bag was taken off her head in one harsh movement. Charles crouched down to look at her face. Tears continued to run down her face along with her mascara, leaving a black trail of makeup on her cheeks.
Charles gripped her jaw and turned her face to one side before turning to the other side. She let out a whimper, making him release his grip. He gently laid his hand against her cheek, making her close her eyes and rub her cheek against his hand as if she were a stray cat looking for an owner.
He placed his hand on the corner of the duct tape and in forceful movement, he ripped the tape off her face. She was about to scream in pain but he gripped her jaw once again. “Did you think I came to rescue you?” He let out a laugh and then added, “I was the one who ordered them to kidnap you.”
Charles looked up at the men standing behind Veronica and said, “leave us.” The men listened to his order and walked out of the building. Charles looked back at Veronica, smirking at the sight of the terror portrayed in her eyes.
“Why so afraid? I haven’t done anything to you yet.” Charles stopped gripping her yaw and stood up. He walked over to the chair in the middle of the room and took a seat. “Did you have fun taking advantage of me?”
Veronica remained silent. “Come here,” he said calmly. Veronica looked up at him but chose to stay right where she was. “Come here,” he repeated, but this time, he raised his voice, making her flinch from the scare.
She looked back at him before slowly standing up. Her legs trembled as she stepped closer to him. When she was one foot away from him, her legs gave out and she fell to the ground. Charles inched closer to her as he grabbed her hair into a fist and pulled back her hair from the roots, making her look at him.
“I asked you a question; did you have fun taking advantage of me?”
“I’m sorry,” she was finally able to let out in a trembling voice. “You’re sorry? How did you think I was going to react?” He inched closer and looked deep into her terrorized eyes. “You’re lucky I’m taking this time to listen to whatever lies you want to say. So go ahead. Elongate your life by a few more seconds.”
Tears began to stream out of her eyes again as she said, “I’m really sorry. I never wanted it to come to this.” Charles let go of her hair as he leaned back while laughing. He looked at her once again and said, “I was going to order the men out there to have their way with you, just like you did with me. I was going to let them rape you until you completely lost sight of your own identity.”
Just imagining the hell she could have gone through was enough to make her regret all of her actions and wish she were dead. “Of course, I couldn’t call myself a gentleman after that… unless that is what you want.”
“No!” she exclaimed. She inched closer and placed her hands on his thighs. “Please, Charles. Anything but that. I will do anything. I beg you.” Charles chuckled and inched closer. Do you realize how pathetic you look right now?”
He grabbed her wrists and pulled her hands off him. He let go of her wrists and grabbed the pistol that rested on the waist loop of his pants. He pulled back the slide of the pistol and then he turned to pistol to the side.
“Take it,” he commanded. Perplexed, Veronica looked at him before looking at the gun in his hand. “Take it before it’s too late.” Knowing full well that if she took too long, he would kill her with that same pistol she reached both of her hands over to the gun and grabbed it.
She looked down at the gun in her hands before looking at the rope that tied her wrists together. “Go on,” he said, “kill yourself.” She looked up at him once again. “You only have two choices. You kill yourself right now, or I let my men rape you to the point where you regret choosing to live.”
She looked back at the gun and slowly rose her hands. Her hands trembled as she placed her finger over the trigger as she pointed the muzzle towards him. “Oh?” He placed his hand on top of the pistol, pulling her hands closer to him.
He pressed the gun against his chest and said, “since you were brave enough to point the gun at me, shoot.” He smirked and added, “come on. Shoot. I don’t have all day. Just remember that if I die, I cannot stop those men from having their way with you and if I live, well, you better pray that I don’t.”
She slowly lost strength in her hands and eventually let go of the pistol. “It’s sad to see how confident you were yesterday compared to today. Where did all that confidence go?” He grabbed the gun from her hands and admitted, “I have been looking for you for a week. If you wouldn’t have met Persephone yesterday, you would have had more time to stay alive. But don’t be so sad, Veronica. No one will miss you.”
As he said those words, he pointed the gun at her. After firing the gun, the bullet scaped through the barrel, hitting Veronica. The bullet made a hole in between her eyebrows before her body collapsed to the side.
Charles looked into the eyes of the lifeless woman as her blood oozed out of her, making a crimson puddle around her. He let out a sigh and stood up from the chair. He placed the gun back on the waistband of his pants and made his way out of the building.
As soon as he walked out of the building, he found his men waiting for more orders. “Clean up the mess. Make sure there is no evidence left behind.” Without looking back, Charles walked back to his vehicle.
Upon their arrival back in Miami, Caroline and the twins stood in the foyer of the mansion as Elizabeth greeted the twins. She tightly held them in her arms, refusing to let go of them. “Abuela, we can’t breathe,” Mia uttered. Elizabeth slowly loosened her grip.
“Mis angelitos, abuela missed you so much.” Elizabeth kissed their foreheads and pulled them into another hug. “Mom, let them go,” Caroline spoke as she watched her children struggle to get free.
Once Elizabeth finally let go of the twins, Caroline added, “it’s nice to see you, mom.” Elizabeth stood up and responded, “it’s nice to see you too, Muñeca.” They started making their way towards the living room.
Elizabeth grabbed Caroline’s arm as she uttered, “I’m so happy you brought the twins back home… I’ve missed them so much.” Caroline stopped walking and looked back at the twins. “Come on,” she said, making the twins catch up to them.
When dinner time rolled around, they all gathered around the dining table like one big happy family. Persephone, Charles, and Achilles arrived before Mark and Taekyung. As they enjoyed dinner in the outdoor lounge, Persephone, who sat in front of Caroline spoke, “Care, how did you get the twins back?”
“What do you mean? They’re my children. Liam came back to his senses and handed them back to me.” Astonished by Caroline’s response, Persephone uttered, “did he really just hand them over to you? Just like that?” As Caroline ate her food, she nodded.
“See? I told you my brother-in-law isn’t a bad person,” Mark commented. “Brother-in-law?” Caroline rose her eyebrow, as she waited for Mark to elaborate, but instead of adding to his statement, he quietly sipped on his wine.
“Mark, care to explain what you just said? Because last time I checked, I haven’t gotten back with Liam, or is there something I missed?” Mark turned to look at her and just smiled, making her think there was something she didn’t know. As if she were missing a piece to the puzzle.
After having dinner together, the kids went to play in the living room, leaving the adults alone in the living room. As they all held different conversations, Caroline looked over at Charles, who was sitting in the corner without saying a word.
She stood up from the couch and said, “Chuck, I’d like a word with you.” At that instant, they all became silent. While Elizabeth, Mark, and Taekyung did not know what was going on, they knew something was not right between them.
Charles looked around the room and then stood up from his seat. Caroline began to make her way to her study as Charles followed behind her. Caroline opened the door to her study and let Charles inside before stepping inside the study.
As she walked to her study, she admitted, “my assistant came over earlier to give me this.” Caroline grabbed the document and pen on top of her desk before stepping closer to Charles, who was taking a seat on the couch on the side of the room.
“You just have to sign it and the port will be all yours. I’ve chosen to just hand it over to you since I have no use for it.” She made a pause and then added, “I’m sure you have found better use for it already.”
Charles stopped reading the document and looked up at her. “Look, Charles, I don’t care why, who, or how you killed the person you killed there today, but you better be careful next time.”
“How did you-?”
“Let me see your gun,” Caroline ordered as she placed her hand in front of him. After a few seconds, Charles handed his firearm to her. Caroline inspected the gun before looking at the magazine. After she finished examining it, she handed it back to him.
Caroline walked to her desk as she said, “I know you better than anyone, Charles. There are no working cameras in that place, but your crime is written all over your face. You need to be more careful.”
She opened one of the drawers from her desk and grabbed the revolver sitting on the shallow drawer before closing the drawer once again. She stepped closer to him as she inspected the chamber, looking to see if it had all the bullets.
“Don’t ever use the gun you carry around because of your work for this sort of thing ever again. Use this instead.” Caroline handed him the gun. “I hope that one day, you are able to forgive me.” Charles handed her the signed document and said, “thank you for looking out for me, Caroline.”
