The next day, Caroline was having breakfast when she received a phone call from her assistant. She ignored the phone call and continued having breakfast. After she finished her meal, she stepped out to the living room and called her assistant.
After her assistant picked up the phone and told her the news, she uttered, “shit” as Elizabeth stepped into the living room. “Yes, I’m leaving right now.” Caroline hung up the call and Elizabeth asked, “what happened?”
“Mason is dead. I’m going to New York.”
“What?” Without giving any explanation, Caroline added, “take care of the twins for me.” Caroline walked to the playroom and hugged her children goodbye before walking out of the mansion.
When Caroline finally arrived in New York, she went straight to Victor’s penthouse. After she entered the penthouse, she made her way to the living room, looking for her father. After walking inside the living room, she found Victor sitting alone on the couch.
“What’s this? I thought I’d find you hanging out with Vanessa. I thought you’d use this opportunity to get close to her again.”
“Caroline? Don’t you have any respect for your brother?”
“He was never my brother. I only came here to make deal with you. Now that he is dead, I can proceed with my agenda.”
“How can you say something so shameless?” Caroline walked over to the armchair in from of the couch and took a seat. She crossed her legs and responded, “no matter how much you insult me, I will not take back what I said.” She reached inside her handbag, looking for the folder her assistant handed to her before she took off on her private jet.
She threw the folder on the glass center table. She placed a pen on top of the folder and added, “sign it and I’ll be on my way.”
“What the hell is this?”
“I’m taking the company from you,” Caroline emotionlessly responded. “Caroline-.” She cut him off and said, “you’re getting old, Victor. You are in no position to run a company. Soon you will turn senile. I’m only doing this for the future of the company. After all, I have to protect the company that belongs to my nephew.”
“Nephew?”
“Oh? You didn’t know? Charles has a son.” Caroline smiled as she watched Victor’s astonished expression. “How- when did he-”
“Victor, I did not come here to put you up to speed with what is happening in other people’s lives. If you want to know more about that child, you should call Charles. I’m just here because I am the most capable person to look after the company until Charles’ son is able to take over it.”
“Can you at least tell me his name? Or show me a picture?”
“No. He is not my child, so I can’t disclose that information. After all, I wouldn’t like it if someone would do the same with my children.” Caroline faked a smile and then added, “are you going to sign the document now?”
“Caroline…”
“I’m not leaving until you sign that document.” Seeing how Victor hesitated as he picked up the document, Caroline spoke, “Mason is dead. There is nothing you can do about that. What you can do is hand over the company to me.”
“Caroline, how can you say something like that about your brother?”
“Victor, you need to move on. The only thing we can do now is prepare for the future. You have to stop thinking of the past; you should know that better than anyone. So, do this for the future of the company. There is no one better than me to take over that company for the time being.”
Victor glanced over at the document on the table before looking at her. He let out a sigh and then reached over to grab the document. He picked up the pen as he began to read the detailed file Joseph had delivered to Caroline before she took off.
When Victor finished reading the document, he finally signed it. He handed it back to Caroline. She placed the document back in the folder before placing it back in her handbag. She stood up from the armchair and said, “my business here is done. I’m glad you agreed to start the transition.”
After Caroline left Victor’s penthouse, the chauffeur drove to the next destination. Once they arrived at the restaurant, the chauffeur parked parallel to the restaurant Caroline wanted to visit. She looked out the tinted window and fixated her gaze on the “closed” sign on the door of the restaurant.
She let out a sigh as she thought, ‘Roxy must have actually gone into hiding.’ Caroline looked at the chauffeur and gave him new directions. The chauffeur nodded before driving away. Caroline looked down at her phone screen before making a phone call.
Once the call went through, she asked, “have you had lunch yet?” Once the person on the other side of the line responded, she added, “I’m in New York and I don’t feel like having lunch alone… I will send you the address.”
Caroline was sitting by herself in the restaurant as she waited for the person she invited earlier. She looked at the maroon color of the wine in her wine glass as a man stepped closer to her table. She was taking a sip of her wine as the man took a seat in front of her.
“I never thought you’d ever invite me out to lunch,” Liam spoke. Caroline placed down her wine glass and responded, “I just didn’t want to eat alone.”
“Well, I’m glad you called me.”
“Don’t flatter yourself. I only called you because I didn’t want to eat alone.” Liam did not say a word. He just stared into her eyes as he smiled. The waitress walked over to them and asked if they were ready to order.
After having lunch together, Caroline and Liam spent the rest of the afternoon together. Once the sun went down, they went to Liam’s penthouse. They were in the living room conversing and drinking.
When their conversation came to an end and pure silence filled the room, Caroline took a sip from her wine glass. She then held her empty wine glass in her hand. Liam reached over to the wine bottle sitting on the coffee table and poured some wine into her wine glass.
He placed the wine bottle back on the table and uttered, “you never responded to my question from earlier.”
“What question?” she asked, pretending not to know. “Why are you here? What made you come to New York?”
“I just had some business to do here. I was planning on going back today, but I didn’t feel like getting on a plane twice on the same day.”
“Is that the only reason why you stayed?”
“Do I need another reason?” Liam leaned closer as he placed his hand over her cheek. “I’m not saying you need a reason or an excuse, I just want to know if there is something you are not telling me.” Caroline pushed his hand away and uttered, “I told you to not flatter yourself.”
“I’m trying to, but your actions contradict your words.”
“How have my actions been any different from what I’ve said?” Liam leaned closer and replied, “you haven’t pushed me away. I keep getting closer…” He hovered his lips over her ear and whispered, “you still haven’t pushed me away.”
He leaned back a bit, placing his face inches away from hers. She looked to the side, trying to avoid his gaze. After she took a sip from her wine glass, she placed the wine glass on top of the coffee table in front of her.
She turned back to look at him as she gently laid her hand on the side of his neck. “I haven’t pushed you away because I don’t want to.” She leaned closer, letting him smell the wine on her breath. “Now, if you want to push me away, you are more than welcome to.”
“I would never push you away.”
“Then kiss me.” He was dumbfounded by her sudden request. He leaned back and let out a sigh. “You have been drinking too much. Why don’t you go lie down? You can use my room.” Liam closed his eyes as he unbuttoned another button from his shirt.
Caroline watched as he unbuttoned his shirt before standing up from the sofa. She sat on his lap, placing her legs by his sides. “What are you-?” Caroline placed her finger over his lip, preventing him from speaking.
“I will forgive you for everything.”
“What?”
“I will forget all of your lies, all your petty schemes, and all the pain and suffering you made me go through.”
“Caroline, I think it’s best if you go to bed.”
“I’m not going anywhere, Liam. I know you want us to get back together-.” He interrupted her and asked, “what do you want? I know you, Caroline. I know you want something in return.” Caroline chuckled and spoke, “you are very bright, Mr. Sabbatini.” She leaned closer and added, “I want you to beg. I want you to beg me to be with you again.”
“Is that all you want?” Caroline nodded. “Caroline, I-.” Caroline pressed a kiss against his neck, making him stop. “Keep going,” she ordered before kissing his neck. “Caroline, please let me be with you.” She stopped kissing his neck and laughed. “Is that all you got?”
She looked at him, waiting for him to speak. “Please, let me be part of your life again. Let me raise the twins by your side. Please, Caroline.” Again, Caroline burst out laughing. “You are terrible at this,” she commented as she stood up.
She extended out her hand, making him stand up as well. She grabbed his hand and started dragging him to the hallway. Once they reached the door to a bedroom, she commanded, “open it.” Liam looked at her and voiced, “you are not being yourself right now. Why don’t we wait until you sober up?”
“If you don’t do as I say, I will walk out of your life forever. I will not get swayed by you anymore. You will never see the twins again. We will disappear from your life completely.” Taking Caroline’s words seriously, he reached over to the top of the door frame and grabbed the key.
He knew she was drunk enough to say all the things she was saying, but not drunk enough to not forget what she was doing. If anything, his own insecurity of losing her once more made him comply with her request.
After Liam opened the door, Caroline went inside the room. She looked around the room as she waited for him to walk inside the room. Once he reluctantly entered the room, Caroline grasped his hand and pulled him closer to her.
He wrapped his arm around her, preventing her from falling. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him in for a passionate kiss. She separated from the kiss as she bit his bottom lip. “Wait here,” she spoke as she freed herself from his grip.
She walked out of the bedroom and just like an obedient dog, Liam walked over to the corner of the bed and took a seat. He let out a sigh as he wondered if he was doing her right thing. He ran his hands through his silky hair before falling back on the soft mattress.
After Caroline went inside Liam’s bedroom, she made her way to her closet. She looked around the lavish walk-in closet, looking for something to wear. Once she found the perfect outfit, she took off her clothes.
She put on a lace carmine-colored lingerie set with a suspender belt that held up her red stockings. She took off her accessories and left them on the countertop in the middle of the closet. She tippy-toed towards the display of high heels, trying to find something to wear in order to stop the cold ceramic floor from touching her delicate feet.
When she finished getting ready, she put on a matching sheer robe and walked back to the bedroom. After she stepped inside the bedroom, she looked at Liam, who was caught off guard. “Like what you see?” she asked in a teasing tone.
