Caroline spent the rest of the afternoon playing around with the children and when it was almost time for dinner, she asked the nanny to give them a bath. At the same time, Caroline went to her bathroom to take a shower before going to the dinner table.
When she went down to the dining room, she found her family and friends gathered by the dinner table. She took a seat and they began to have dinner as one big happy family. Elizabeth, sitting at the corner of the table, looked at everyone gathered for dinner and could not help but feel her heartache in bitterness. She could not bear the thought of seeing three empty seats at the dinner table.
After having dinner, the nanny took the children to play in the playroom before it was time for them to go to bed. “There is something I’d like to share,” Charles spoke. He stood up from his chair and looked at Persephone. He then made eye contact with everyone at the table. “Persephone and I started dating…” After some silence he added, “and Achilles is also my child.”
“Congratulations,” Elizabeth spoke. “Thank you, Elizabeth.”
“Congratulations,” Mark added along with Taekyung. Charles looked at Caroline, who was calmly sipping her wine. She felt Charles’s gaze fixed on her and she placed the glass back on the table. She looked standing in front of her and spoke, “I don’t know who you two were trying to fool because it was incredibly obvious there was something going on between you two and if Achilles being your child were shocking news to you, I’d like to ask you to go get your eyes checked because that boy is a mini-you.”
Persephone looked at Charles and laughed. Elizabeth then jested, “Caroline don’t be so mean to your cousin. I am sure it was hard for him to distinct a mini version of himself.” Caroline and Elizabeth both laughed, making Charles slowly sit back down. He looked at Mark and Taekyung and asked, “did you also know?”
Mark slowly nodded, “it wasn’t as obvious for me, but I had my suspicions.” Caroline stopped laughing and spoke, “don’t feel bad, Chuck. You are not the only man who couldn’t recognize his own children. After all, the father of the twins still believes their father is another man.”
After that, everything became silent. Caroline looked to the side and said, “what news have you two got for us?” Mark blushed and looked down at his hand. He stared at the ring on his finger before Taekyung grasped his hand. “We’re engaged.” Caroline smiled and spoke, “congratulations.”
Unlike everyone at the table, Caroline already knew Taekyung was going to propose to Mark. Before leaving for New York, Taekyung had spoken to Caroline and told her his plan. Instantly, Caroline was happy to know her best friend was ready to propose to her brother.
“Congratulations,” they all responded. Then Charles looked at Caroline and commented, “don’t tell me you also knew about that.” Caroline smiled and took the last sip of wine in her glass. She then stood up from the chair and spoke, “it’s the twins’ bedtime. Good night.”
Caroline walked out of the dining room and made her way to the playroom, where she found the nanny walking out of the playroom while holding the twins’ hands. Caroline grabbed Achilles’ small hand-picked him up.
They walked up the stairs and went to the twins’ bedroom. The nanny changed the twins into their pajamas and Caroline tucked them into bed along with Achilles. She read a book to the children before they fell asleep.
She then made her way to her bedroom, where she walked into her walk-in closet. She changed into her silk baby doll and opened a bottle of wine she had on top of the dresser. She poured some wine into the wine glass before placing the bottle back on top of the dresser.
She meticulously looked at the dark liquid in the wine glass before carefully smelling the intense odor of grape. She then swirled around the glass before taking a sip and tasting the bitterness and deliciousness of the wine.
Caroline then grabbed the bottle of wine and walked out to the balcony. She sat on the couch and placed the bottle of wine on the glass table in front of her. She was enjoying the richness of the wine by herself, the wind brushing against her rosy cheeks as she lost herself in her thoughts.
She was remembering the events that took place before she said goodbye to Liam forever and could not hold back the tear before it escaped her eye. She took another sip of the wine as another tear left her eye.
‘How could fool myself thinking I would forget about you?’ She told herself. Caroline looked at the dark night portrayed in front of her and let out a sigh. “What’s with the sigh?” Persephone asked as she stepped out to the terrace. Caroline looked at her, letting her best friend see the tear streaming down her cheek.
Persephone walked closer to her and sat next to her. She wiped away Caroline’s tears. “What happened?”
“How could I be so stupid?”
“I don’t understand-.”
“I want him. I don’t need him, but I want him back in my life.” Persephone grabbed Caroline’s empty wine glass and placed it on top of the center table. She pulled Caroline into a hug. “Shh… I am here for you, Caroline. Drowning yourself in work and alcohol will not make anything better.”
“I miss him. I miss the Liam I met four years ago.” Caroline separated from the hug and wiped away her tears. “It might be stupid of me to cry like this because of someone like him, but it just hurts to see him move on… I let him go without putting up a fight and look at me now.”
Persephone cupped Caroline’s face and spoke, “he doesn’t deserve you. He doesn’t deserve your tears. He has moved on and you should too. Maybe find someone new.”
“I don’t want anyone new. I want him.” Persephone leaned closer to Caroline’s face and spoke, “it’s late. Why don’t you get some sleep?” Caroline nodded and Persephone pressed a peck against her lips. “Go to bed. I will join you in a bit, okay?” Caroline nodded. “Good girl.”
Caroline stood up from the couch and made her way back inside her bedroom. She walked to her bed and slowly laid on the bed. She covered herself with the bed covers and fell fast asleep.
Persephone walked inside Caroline’s closet to look for something to wear. She found Caroline’s matching baby doll and put it on. She then walked to the bed and slowly laid on the bed. She watched Caroline peacefully sleep.
She then saw a tear escape Caroline’s eye and could not but think Caroline was reminiscing her good times with Liam in her dreams. She wiped the tear away and pressed a peck against Caroline’s forehead.
“Everything will get better soon.”
The next day, Caroline was woken up by Persephone’s light touch against her porcelain skin. Caroline slowly opened her eyes with a smile on her face. “Good morning,” Persephone softly spoke. “Good morning,” Caroline responded in the same tone.
“How’d you sleep?” Caroline slowly sat up as she remembered what happened last night. She looked at the woman next to her and spoke, “what happened last night… it wasn’t me. It was the alcohol talking. You shouldn’t have seen me like that.”
Persephone pulled Caroline into a hug and spoke, “stop it, Caroline. You don’t need to hide your emotions from me. I am your best friend. If anything, I am happy to see that you are human and you get hurt too.” Caroline let out a soft chuckle.
After they continued to hug for a while, Caroline remembered she had to get ready to go to work. She separated from the hug and spoke, “I will get ready for work. There is something important I must take care of. I should be back before lunch.”
Caroline stood up from the bed and made her way to the bathroom. She took off her clothes and walked inside the shower. She ran the water as she stood underneath the cold water that poured from the ceiling.
After Caroline got ready for work, she walked out of the mansion and walked to the white Rolls Royce. Her chauffeur opened the door for her and she got in the luxurious car. The chauffeur walked to the driver’s seat and opened the door. He got in the car and drove to Caroline’s company.
After Caroline spent some of her morning in meetings, she was finally back inside her office. She was going over the paperwork she had to do yesterday when the door of her office was opened. She looked up from the document she was reading and stared at the two men walking inside her office. “Mr. Sabbatini, you should not be here.”
“It’s okay, Joseph,” Caroline spoke. Joseph paused for a second before bowing his head and walking out of Caroline’s office, closing the door behind her. “Mr. Sabbatini, what brings you here? Shouldn’t you be in New York planning your wedding?”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Caroline gave him a confused expression. “I don’t follow-.”
“Why didn’t you tell me about what happened with the twins yesterday?”
“What? How do you know about that?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Liam, why are you here?” Liam stepped further inside Caroline’s office. He took a seat on one of the armchairs in front of Caroline without breaking eye contact with her. “What are you doing here, Liam?”
“I had some business to do here,” he responded. “I don’t care what you had to do. My question was why are you here in my office?” Refusing to tell Caroline the real reasons why he traveled to Miami, Liam just stared at Caroline without saying a word.
Yesterday after ending his call with Charles, Liam instantly decided to travel to Miami. Refusing to let Caroline dirty her hands, Liam decided to take care of the issue at hand. After finding out what happened with the twins, Liam could not sit still.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Caroline asked. Liam said nothing. Instead, he stood up from the chair and walked by the side of the desk. He stepped closer to her and Caroline turned to the side. He stood in front of her and uttered, “where is the father of your children?”
“He is working.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes.”
“Why don’t you stop lying to me, Caroline?” After being taken aback Caroline responded, “I am not lying to you.” Liam leaned down and placed his hand on the back of the chair, placing his face close to Caroline’s. “Why are you lying?”
“I’m not-.” Liam leaned back again and spoke, “since you refuse to tell me the truth, I will tell you how I know what you are lying. I sent your boy toy back to London, far away from you. I met with him and we had a little chat. Now, tell me why he would leave you and his “children” just to go to London?”
“As I said: work.” Liam let out a sigh then he said, “Caroline, why are you so stubborn?” Despite knowing full well Harry was not the father of the twins, he let Caroline lie to him to make her believe he believed her lie. He just wanted to let Caroline tell him the truth but seeing how she wanted to continue to lie to him, he took it upon sending Harry to London to pressure her into telling him the truth.
“Why do you keep pestering me?” Liam stepped closer to her. To stopped him from getting closer, she placed her glaucous stiletto against his thigh. “You’re right. Harry is not the father of the twins. He is just the man I happen to use to my convenience. The real father of the twins is dead.” Liam slightly frowned hearing her lie to him once again.
