We’re all familiar with beauty face masks — whether you’re into exfoliating masks, hydrating masks, or some fabulous combination of the two, masking is a vital step in any woman’s skin care routine. But there’s another crucial step that your routine might be missing: lip masks.
If you’re like most women, you’re probably wondering what a lip mask even is. That’s completely understandable because lip masks are a newcomer to the beauty scene—but they’re definitely something you don’t want to miss out on!
In this post, I will explain everything you need to know about lip masks and reveal 11 easy DIY recipes for plump, luscious lips.
Are Lip Masks Actually A Thing?
Yep, they sure are. And, holy moly, are we grateful! Lip masks are a simple, fun way to keep your lips soft and smooth.
I love DIY masking. A lot. It might be a bit of an obsession, but hey, we’re not ashamed!
I’ve read and tried how to make DIY masks from mud, clay, charcoal, oatmeal, avocado, papaya, cucumber, aloevera, yogurt, coconut oil, turmeric, and a few other ingredients that you probably have in your kitchen right now. Needless to say, we know our stuff when it comes to homemade face masks.
That’s why I can say with a great deal of confidence that lip masks are essential for keeping your lips plump and smooth!
There are even lip masks for different needs. If your lips are chapped, for example, you can try an exfoliating lip mask. If you’re just looking for some extra moisture, you can use a hydrating lip mask.
There’s a lip mask for every skin type!
11 DIY Lip Masks You Can Make At Home
Now, we’ll stop teasing you about how amazing lip masks are and give you some recipes so you can try one for yourself! Here are the 11 best DIY lip masks you can easily make at home.
For all of the lip mask recipes below, simply create the mixture, apply it to your lips, and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Then wipe the lip mask off with a soft, wet washcloth and enjoy the lusciousness.
Hydrating Lip Masks
Dry lips lead to chapped lips, especially during the cold months. If your lips are dry, they’re not getting the proper hydration. Maybe you’re using some form of chapstick religiously, but your chapstick could actually be the cause of your dry lips.
1) HONEY AND COCONUT OIL
Honey and coconut oil — sounds like the beginnings of a delicious baked good, but it’s actually an incredibly hydrating lip mask! Just use these two simple ingredients:
1 teaspoon of honey
1 teaspoon of coconut oil
You’ll want to soften the coconut oil a bit before you mix it with the honey. You can either put it in the microwave for about 15 seconds or put it in a pan on the stove on low heat for about two minutes.
After the coconut oil is soft, simply mix it together with the honey and apply it to your lips. This mask is a super effective way to fight off lip lines.
2) HONEY AND AVOCADO
This lip mask is similar to the last one but uses avocado in place of the coconut oil. The avocado is full of vitamins and minerals that will replenish and hydrate your lips! Here’s what you’ll need:
1 teaspoon of honey
2 teaspoons of mashed avocado
Just mash up a ripe avocado in a bowl and measure out two teaspoons. Then mix in the honey and you’re ready to go. We recommend the honey and avocado mask to treat smoker’s lines.
3) HONEY AND CUCUMBER
Cucumbers are another excellent lip mask ingredient. They’re full of water and antioxidants, so it’s no surprise that muddled cucumber is great for your skin. The only ingredients are:
1 teaspoon of honey
2 teaspoons of muddled cucumber
You’ll want to peel the cucumber before you muddle, and try to only use the sides of the cucumber so you don’t have any chunky seeds in your lip mask mixture.
Exfoliating Lip Masks
Dry lips can also lead to flaky lip skin. Unfortunately, that flaky skin is actually made up of dead skin cells (yuck!). Do your lips a favor by using the following DIY lip masks to exfoliate them and eliminate dead skin.
4) YOGURT AND KIWI
Yogurt lip masks are a simple and effective way to get rid of dead skin cells on your lips. The lactic acid in the yogurt helps peel away old skin cells so that newer, brighter skin can shine through. Here’s the recipe:
2 teaspoons of Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon of muddled kiwi
Kiwi is one of those superfoods that gets overlooked all too often. Use kiwi in your lip mask and keep it in your diet, too!
5) YOGURT AND LEMON JUICE
This lip mask is a bit stronger than the others, as it contains both lactic acid (from the yogurt) and citric acid (from the lemon juice). It essentially acts as a lip peel.
It’s amazing for peeling away old, lackluster skin! The recipe is simple:
2 teaspoons of Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon of lemon juice
If you have super dry or sensitive lips, you might want to stick to the hydrating honey masks.
6) OLIVE OIL AND BROWN SUGAR
The olive oil and brown sugar lip mask is a gentle, all-natural exfoliator. While the olive oil provides moisture, the brown sugar gently brushes away dead skin and leaves you with soft, smooth lips. Use these two ingredients:
2 teaspoons of olive oil
1 teaspoon of brown sugar
Rather than simply applying this lip mask and waiting for 10 minutes, you’ll need to be a bit more work.
Using one or two fingers, simply rub the mixture onto your lips for about three minutes. Then let it sit for about five minutes before wiping it off.
7) ALOE VERA AND RAW SUGAR
This mask is a second option for a natural, exfoliating lip mask. It gets rid of dead skin and provides tons of vitamins and minerals at the same time! Here’s what to use:
2 teaspoons of all-natural aloe vera gel
1 teaspoon of raw sugar
Just as with the olive oil and brown sugar mask above, you should gently massage this lip mask on for about three minutes. Then let it sit for about five more minutes and wipe it off to reveal smooth, luscious lips!
8) COCONUT OIL AND RAW SUGAR
If you want your lips to absorb moisture, you’re going to need to get rid of the dead skin. This mask is another great option for doing exactly that. And you only need two ingredients:
1 teaspoon of organic coconut oil
1 teaspoon of raw sugar
Just like you did for the coconut oil and honey lip mask, you’ll need to soften the coconut oil. But don’t get it too hot as it will melt the sugar. And that would be bad since sugar is the key ingredient in this recipe for exfoliating your lips!
Rub the mixture onto your lips — making sure to cover your entire mouth — for a few minutes to scrub away the dead skin. Use this DIY exfoliating lip mask to reveal smooth, kissable lips!
Lip Masks To Color Your Lips
If you’re wanting to add some natural color to your lips, we have a list of DIY lip masks just for you! Use the following ingredients to naturally tint your lips over time.
9) HONEY AND POMEGRANATE JUICE
Whatever method you choose to exfoliate your lips, follow up with this DIY lip mask to moisturize and soothe your lips — all while adding a hint of color! You’ll need just two ingredients:
1 teaspoon of raw honey
½ teaspoon of fresh pomegranate juice
Honey is a nice, thick substance, making it perfect for your lips! Not only that, but it also has antibiotic properties to protect your lips. Guess what else has antibiotic properties: pomegranate juice.
Pomegranate juice also adds some temporary color to your lips! Apply this DIY lip oil and leave on for about 15 minutes…if you can hold back from licking the sweet mixture off your lips.
Honey won’t be the only thing that’s sweet after you use this lip mask!
10) ROSE PETALS AND MILK
If you want rosy lips, go for the roses! We’re serious. If you notice some discoloration and dark patches on your lips, grab these two ingredients to achieve rosy, pink lips:
5-6 rose petals
½ cup of milk
Follow these steps for rosy, pink lips:
Soak the rose petals in milk overnight.
In the morning, strain the rose petals and mash them.
Add a few drops of milk to the mashed rose petals to form a paste.
Apply the paste to your lips and leave on for about 15 minutes.
Rinse off the paste with cold water.
Since rose petals contain natural oils and sugars, they’re a perfect source for moisturizing your dry lips! And of course, the color from the rose petals will seep into your skin, leaving you with naturally pink lips.
11) STRAWBERRY, HONEY, AND OLIVE OIL
Do you want rosy, younger-looking lips? Then go straight to your pantry to whip up this remedy for brightening dull lips! To achieve desired results, use this lip mask three to four times per week. Here’s what you’ll need:
One strawberry
One teaspoon of honey
One teaspoon of olive oil
Follow these steps for nourished, rosy lips:
Mash a strawberry and then add in the honey and a few drops of olive oil. Blend the ingredients.
Use your clean finger to apply the mask to your lips. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.
Use a damp washcloth to rinse off the mask.
The vitamin C and antioxidants in strawberries will brighten and add vibrancy to your lips! Of course, the color in the strawberries will give your lips that natural pink tint you desire!
