Outside the operation room, Marco seemed to have sensed something. He felt a sudden pain in her heart which forced him to lean forward. He grabbed the cloth at his left heart with his right hand and pressed it hard.
Marco frowned and looked at the door, feeling that something important was going away from him.
At this time, the door opened. A nurse came out in a hurry. When she saw Marco, she rushed forward and asked, “Are you a family member of the patient? The patient is dying. You need to sign an operating agreement and a notice of critical illness.”
Marco only felt his ears buzzing. He furrowed and looked at the nurse, asked stiffly, “Kristen is about to die? Why?”
Kristen just got wet in the rain while kneeling for half an hour without eating for four days. At most, she would be weak and vomited a few mouthfuls of blood.
Why was she dying?
The nurse looked at Marco’s sluggish appearance. It was obvious that Marco still did not know Kristen’s situation. The nurse briefly explained, “The patient has stage IV stomach cancer, and the situation is dangerous now. Her family has to sign the operating agreement and the critical condition notice…” The nurse looked at Marco’s wet eyes and suddenly did not know how to continue.
Stage IV stomach cancer?
That was impossible. Kristen had never been sick. She has always been in a good health. She can’t have stage IV stomach cancer.
Marco thought that a woman like Kristen should live a very life. Why would someone tell him Kristen was about to die?
Marco thought that he must have had hallucinated.
Marco staggered back a step, his knees hitting the chair behind him and he fell.
Marco stared at his hands again. His hands had been wiped clean, but he still felt a lot of bloody smell no matter how hard he washed.
The patient’s condition could not be delayed. The nurse brought two agreements and handed them to Marco. She said, “Sir.”
Marco looked at the critical condition notice with bloodshot eyes. A sharp pain spread from his heart to every corner of his body, and even his fingers trembled in pain.
Marco took the pen and looked at the notice of critical illness. He knew every word, but he couldn’t understand it when he read them together.
The nurse urged him, “Sir, please sign it quickly.”
Marco’s hands were shaking. He clenched his fists and punched the wall behind him. There was a muffled sound and the nurse was shocked. The nurse looked over and saw a bloody mark on the wall.
Marco took a deep breath and suppressed the pain in his heart. He then signed his name.
“Will she be alright?” Marco asked.
The nurse shook her head. “The patient’s condition is very dangerous. It’s hard for the hospital to ensure that she’s fine … We will do our best.”
Marco handed the two documents to the nurse. As Marco watched the nurse leave, he instantly slumped against the cold chair.
A piece of Marco’s heart seemed to have been taken away by a knife and became empty. The unprecedented feeling of emptiness made Marco unable to help but grab the cloth and bend forward.
Marco never thought that such a scene would appear. Kristen was in danger. The doctors and nurses rescued her but he could do nothing.
Kristen had been with Marco for four years and had always been a dispensable existence. He did not love her nor care about her feelings, and he did not care about her life and death.
But when Kristen might never wake up again, Marco was so scared that he felt like something important had left him.
Marco was in a trance, blurred. He raised his hand and rubbed the eyes, only to find that the corners of his eyes were wet.
Marco suddenly remembered the first time he saw Kristen six years ago. Kristen was wearing a long red dress with her long hair reaching her waist. She looked stunning when she smiled and everybody loved her.
She took a stick of sugar-coated fruit and walked up to him, “Marco, long time no see.” Kristen said with her eyes full of light.
Since when was there no light in Kristen’s eyes?
Marco took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. Before he could light a cigarette, a cleaner passing by pointed at a sign on the wall and reminded him, “Sir, smoking is prohibited at the hospital.”
Marco had to put it back. His hand holding the cigarette kept shaking. He looked up at the red light of the operating room, and his left heart twitched a few times, which was worse than just now.
The nurse went to ask Antonio. Not long after, Antonio rushed over. Looking at Marco sitting outside the operating room, he was stunned.
“Why are you here? Where’s Kristen?” A bad premonition arose in Antonio’s heart.
Marco raised his head, he said with an empty stare, “She’s there.”
Antonio knew that he was asked to rescue Kristen.
Antonio’s face changed greatly, and his serious face became more anxious. He did not hesitate and rushed directly into the operating room.
“Antonio, do you know that Kristen has stage IV stomach cancer?” Marco asked.
Kristen and Antonio were close. They grew up together. Kristen was sick. As a doctor, it was impossible for Antonio to not know about it.
Antonio did not answer, but when he closed the door, he glanced at Marco coldly. Marco was heartbroken.
At that moment, Marco felt that what he was breathing was not air, but thousands of steel needles and arrows piercing through his heart. For the first time, Marco felt what it meant to be suddenly seized by a pang.
The door of the operating room closed again. Marco fainted and he almost lost his balance. He clenched the clothes on his chest and a bloody smell came from his mouth.
Outside, the rain continued to fall. When the strong emotions gradually settled down, Marco only felt that he was frozen and shattered by the rain.
