Marco calmed down gradually. He glanced at Antonio, then turned and walked towards the ICU.
The ward was filled with the smell of disinfectant. Marco’s eyebrows inadvertently furrowed. Step by step, he walked to the bedside and looked at Kristen’s pale face.
The ward was very quiet. The feeling of emptiness was different from when he was at home. The dead silence made people feel a little stuffy. Marco sat down and looked up at the liquid dripping from the infusion tube. For the first time, he felt afraid.
What was he afraid of?
He was afraid that Kristen would continue to sleep and never wake up again.
Marco’s throat tightened. Tears began to swell up in his eyes. His hands trembled as he went over to hold Kristen’s slender wrist.
The hospital gown was already the smallest size, but it was still loose for Kristen. With a slight lift of his hand, a part of her sleeve fell off. Then, he saw a few eye-catching pinholes on her slender arm. There was a circle of purple and red liquid around the pinhole and the yellow mark of some unknown medicine.
“Kristen, I didn’t know that you were seriously sick.”
He suddenly remembered that day when he locked Kristen in the bedroom. At that time, Kristen knocked on the door asking for help and shouted that she was about to die.
He didn’t believe her at that time and thought that she was up to something.
He had not seen Kristen get sick before, but that did not mean that she would never get sick or die.
Now, he regretted that he didn’t take her words seriously and let her out.
“Kristen… Kristen…” Tears blurred his vision. He held Kristen’s hand and rested his face on her palm, calling her name and trying to wake her up.
However, it didn’t work.
Time passed bit by bit. In the duration, Antonio came in to check on how Kristen’s physical condition was going. It turned out that everything was going well with her medical data. Now they only needed to wait and see if she could wake up after 48 hours.
Antonio glanced at Marco coldly. At this moment, both of them were concerned about Kristen. Therefore, they did not quarrel with each other like before.
Marco had been staying awake for the past 40 hours. His eyes were dry and bloodshot. Exhaustion and sleepiness were instinctive but Marco did not dare to sleep. Kristen would be afraid and thirsty when she woke up.
Marco raised his hand and gently touched the wound on Kristen’s forehead. His fingertips trembled slightly. Kristen was like a fragile bubble now, as if she would break when he touched her.
He didn’t know how long she could make it with stage IV stomach cancer.
Marco did not dare to search online for information, afraid that he would collapse when he saw the result.
He knew the result. It was a terminal illness, which meant that Kristen would not die of old age like a normal person. A patient with stage IV stomach cancer was like a dead leaf on a branch in autumn, which could fall at any time.
Kristen had been on a drip all day long, which included two bags of nutrient fluids a day. Each of them would cost four hours. In addition to other medicines, only the drips might cost twelve to thirteen hours.
The back of Kristen’s hand was stabbed with an indwelling needle. The drips flowed slowly and did not hurt. Even so, the back of Kristen’s hand was still swollen and her hand was cold.
Kristen took over the Lawrence Group when she was 18 years old. At that time, she was still a young girl. She had to be strong. Not only did she have to manage the company, but she also had to support the two “family members” who scolded her and looked down upon her.
She handled those alone, and people almost forgot that she was only a twenty-four years old girl.
The nurse came in to change medicine for Kristen. Marco looked at her skilled movements and could not help but ask, “Will she awaken?”
After the nurse got it done, she looked back and inadvertently met Marco’s scarlet eyes. In just two days, Marco changed a lot. His eyes were red. There were dark circles under his eyes, and his beard was messy. It was obvious that he had not slept during the past two days.
The nurse looked away. She could not figure out Marco’s emotions. Two days ago, the video and photos of Kristen kneeling in front of the reporters became a trending topic.
All the people in Ratna City had seen that video taken by a passer-by. In the video, Marco was standing not far away from Kristen. But he was indifferent at that moment and had no intention to help Kristen. He stood behind Kristen and watched coldly as Kristen knelt. Kristen faced the reporters and the bullying from the victims’ families alone.
According to reliable information, Kristen had knelt in the heavy rain for half an hour.
An ordinary person would not be able to kneel for half an hour, let alone in the heavy rain. Moreover, with Kristen’s physical condition, it was no wonder that she would vomit blood incessantly that day. Her stomach cancer had flared up. It was a blessing amid misfortune for her to be alive.
