On Wednesday.
Marco came to pick Kristen up for the trial.
After resting in the hospital for a week, Kristen was now able to sit up and her stomach was not as painful as before, but her body was still weak.
Knowing that Kristen was going to the court, Adele prepared her a wheelchair with infusion bags on it. Looking at the two infusion bags, Kristen felt quite helpless.
“Can I stop the infusion today? It is not convenient for me to go to court…”
“No,” Adele interrupted her righteously, “Dr. Balan had said it can’t be stopped. You have to come back and continue to stay in hospital after the trial.”
Kristen glanced at the corridor and asked, “Where is Antonio?”
Adele replied to her, “He is on his daily ward rounds. By the way, Dr. Balan also asked me to tell you that you are not allowed to leave the hospital if you don’t take the infusion.”
Kristen wondered, “What can I do? Antonio will never take back his words. In addition, he will definitely be nagging if I don’t listen to him.”
Kristen could only nod helplessly as he watched Adele put the infusion bags on the shelf and begin the infusion.
There suddenly came the vibration on the phone. Kristen picked it up with her left hand and took a look. It was a text from Marco. He had already arrived at the hospital entrance.
“Go and settle the temporary discharge procedures.” Kristen pointed to the drawer of the bedside table. “The forms are all inside.”
Adele took a bag and stuffed all the forms into it. Then she pushed Kristen to the front desk to pay the fees.
There were many patients in the hospital. In case of someone bumping into her, Adele placed her in a corner.
“Ms. Lawrence, please wait here for a moment. I gotta go through the procedures now.”
Kristen nodded. “Thank you.”
As soon as Adele left, Kristen took out her phone and sent a text message to Marco to tell him her location. Just as she sent it out, her phone rang.
She thought that it was Marco, but the caller ID showed that it was a stranger.
Kristen hesitated for a moment before picking up the phone. “Hello?”
There were all kinds of messy sounds coming from the phone. No one answered her. Kristen thought maybe someone had called the wrong number. She was about to hang up when Darin’s voice came from the other side of the phone.
“Kristen, it’s Dad.”
“Dad?” Kristen asked with a frown, “Aren’t you on your way to court? And who gave you this phone? Where are you?”
A bad premonition caught Kristen. All kinds of doubts squeezed into her brain. She could not help but clench her phone tightly and her expression became serious.
“Kristen, Dad has let you down all these years. I am not a qualified father. After I leave, take care of your brother, Aden,” Darin said in a trembling voice.
“I have always owed you one thing … You are very outstanding! I am proud of you … I am sorry, Kristen. Be careful of Marco…”
“Where are you going? Dad! Darin Lawrence, answer me!” Kristen anxiously called out his name. Normally, Darin would respond to her. But this time, he didn’t…
A rumbling sound suddenly came from the phone. It sounded like the wind, but also like some kind of vibration.
Suddenly, a sharp and fearful voice was heard, “Someone wants to jump off the building!”
Was Darin going to jump off the building?
“Dad, say something. Answer me, where are you? I’ll come to you. I’ll promise you anything you want. The Lawrence Group belongs to you and Aden. I don’t want anything. Say something to me…”
There were all kinds of sounds on the phone except for Darin’s voice. Kristen’s breathing began to quicken, and her voice trembled abnormally.
She was so anxious that she was covered in cold sweats. Tears kept dripping down her face. She began to choke with sobs and beg him softly.
“If you come any closer, I will jump down from here!” Darin’s voice sounded like a sudden clap of thunder.
Before Kristen could make a sound, there was a harsh scream of horror.
Then, Kristen heard the sound of a huge stone falling to the ground, which was extremely heart-shaking.
The surroundings suddenly became very quiet. Kristen could feel a strong sense of despair.
Kristen’s mind was blank. She carefully called out in a trembling voice, “Dad?”
Nobody replied to her.
Having no idea what she should do, Kristen tried to call out a few more times. She put down her phone. The screen was already dark. She didn’t even know when the call ended. She quickly called back and what she heard was only a cold reminder.
“Sorry, the number you dialed has been powered off…”
Kristen’s tears were running down on the phone, blurring the phone screen. She trembled and reached out to wipe off them, but she could not make it no matter how hard she tried. It was just like the call that she couldn’t get connected.
