The police officer didn’t know how to tell Kristen that her father was dead.
Marco, who was standing behind Kristen, said, “Open the door.”
The police officer nodded and pressed his hand on the doorknob. With a click, the door opened.
After only opening a crack, they smelled blood, and then the police moved to the side to make space for them to enter.
For the first time, Kristen was afraid of entering a room. She didn’t see anything inside by the door and the words Darin said to her on the phone kept sounding in her head.
Marco pushed her into the room very slowly. After entering, he suddenly stopped. A white sheet was covered on a stretcher.
When Kristen saw this, she grabbed the handle of the wheelchair with force and the wound on her hand cracked again.
She tried to stand up, but before she could move, Marco, who was aware of her movements, pressed her back. “Don’t move. I’ll push you over there.”
Kristen shook her head. She did not believe that the person under the white sheet would be her father. She muttered, “It can’t be him.”
Kristen did not believe that the one lying there would be Darin, who had once cursed her.
Darin was just like what she said. He didn’t deserve to be a father. He was a bad person. Darin loved his son more than his daughter and thus would vent his anger on her.
But in fact, when Kristen was very young, he hugged her, fed her milk powder, and changed diapers…
But why did everything change?
Kristen opened her mouth and wanted to call out “Dad,” but she couldn’t make a sound.
Marco pushed Kristen over and stopped. The smell of blood became stronger.
Kristen opened her eyes wide numbly. Her eyes turned left and right and finally stopped on the man’s uncovered left hand. There was a ring on his ring finger.
It was Darin’s ring, his wedding ring. He had worn it for 27 years and had never taken it off.
“Dad,” Kristen finally made a sound, but then she began to sob.
Kristen felt that everything was spinning. She staggered to stand up with the handle of the wheelchair. Marco helped her. Kristen pushed him away and walked forward with all her strength. After taking two steps, she fell to her knees with a thud.
Behind her, Marco reached out and hugged her. Kristen trembled in his arms with a painful expression.
Kristen covered her eyes, tears flowing out from her fingers. The overwhelming despair almost crushed her.
Kristen knelt on the ground. Her knees moved forward bit by bit to the white sheet. She raised her left hand, grabbed its corner, and slowly pulled it down.
When Kristen saw Darin’s twisted face covered in blood, it was as if all the bones in her body had been removed and she collapsed in Marco’s arms.
In fact, Kristen knew from the beginning that Darin was dead. How could he survive after jumping down from a building of more than 30 floors? Moreover, Kristen remembered the last scene of the video very clearly. Just like now, Darin’s face was full of blood, and his brain cracked…
Kristen just did not dare to believe it and accept that the man who watched her grow up was dead.
Kristen choked through sobbing. “Dad… I’ll promise you anything… I’ll give you the company and Aden. I don’t want anything else. Get up… I didn’t mean to leave you alone during those four days when you were in trouble. I was locked up and I didn’t know what had happened to you. If you blame me, just get up and scold me… Dad… Don’t ignore me… Everything I said before was fake. I don’t hate you…”
Kristen put on a smile that looked uglier than crying. “You cared so much about how you would look. Why would you hurt yourself like this? Your clothes are dirty…”
She mumbled to herself in a hoarse voice, “Dad, it’s too cold here. Hurry up and come back with me… I’ll give you all the money you want…”
The policeman not far away heard her and could not help but interrupt, “Ms. Lawrence, your father is already dead. He died on the spot after jumping down from a thirty-story building. He won’t be able to wake up.”
Kristen shook her head and muttered, “No… He is just angry. He will act like this when he is angry. He pretends to sleep and ignores me… He is always angry with me…” Kristen turned to look at Marco and asked him with a choked voice, “Do you think he is angry with me and deliberately ignoring me?”
Marco did not say anything. He looked at her with his cold eyes, as if he was mocking her.
Kristen panicked. She couldn’t help but cry out, her tears falling like pearls.
Marco’s voice was hoarse. “Kristen, your father is gone. You knew it when you were in the hospital.”
“No, I don’t know! He isn’t dead!”
“Marco, my dad isn’t dead!”
“My dad has always been angry that I took everything from the Lawrence family. He was angry that I married you. If I give the family back to him and divorce you, he will wake up.”
When Marco heard the word “divorce”, his heart skipped a beat. What he was most worried about happened.
“Don’t even think about getting a divorce. Even if Darin died, I can still tie you up so that you’ll never get rid of me!” Marco thought.
Marco grabbed her slender wrist and stopped her from moving. “Kristen, enough! I’ve told you your father is dead. Even if you give the Lawrence family to him and divorce me, your father will not wake up.”
“Let go of me, Marco!” Kristen didn’t know if it was because she had seen too much blood, but Kristen’s eyes were terrifyingly bloody. She vented her anger at Marco.
Marco couldn’t bear to see her look at him like that. It was as if he was her enemy. His half-narrowed eyes flashed a hint of danger. “What? You’re going to make a scene here?”
Make a scene? Marco would always find her hysteria unreasonable and rub salt on her wound.
