“Kristen, did you sleep well last night?” Brenda seemed concerned yet her eyes were full of scheming and plotting.
Kristen went downstairs and stopped seven feet away from Brenda. Brenda wore a low-cut chiffon blouse. There were some well-marked scratches on Brenda’s slender neck, too conspicuous to ignore.
Kristen could easily conjure up what Marco and Brenda had been through last night.
Kristen felt sick when she realized that Marco would then put his hands on her after he had sex with Brenda.
Kristen tried to hold her sickness back and played it cool. “Very well.”
With her lashes lowered, Brenda apologized, “Last night, Marco and I came back late, so he went to sleep with me. I didn’t sleep well last night. I was afraid you were affected.”
It turned out that Brenda was bragging. No wonder she only wore a thin chiffon blouse on such a cold day. A large part of her neck was revealed on purpose so that Kristen could see the scratches on Brenda’s neck.
Kristen didn’t go mad as Brenda had expected. Kristen only chuckled. She was mocking Brenda for not knowing the negative effects of hickeys on health.
Kristen didn’t want to bother talking anymore. Kristen had saved Brenda’s life several times. She didn’t have to warn Brenda again.
Kristen looked at the scratches on Brenda’s neck and frowned. With her eyes full of contempt, Kristen said, “What a dog!”
“How can you say that? Marco is not…”
Kristen’s phone rang before Brenda was done. Kristen picked up the phone in front of her. “Hello… Yes… Yes… Turn left. Wait for me at the door. I’m heading out now.”
It was the delivery man. Kristen didn’t feel like talking to Brenda at all. Kristen headed to the door at once.
“Kristen, stop!” Brenda couldn’t stand being ignored. She yelled and blocked Kristen’s way.
Kristen stopped and looked up and down at Brenda, wondering what made Brenda have the guts to challenge Kristen. Kristen said, “Did you just blow your fairy cover-up?”
“Kristen, do you think you are still the privileged Miss Lawrence? I’m gonna tell Marco about what you did and he’ll kick you out of the house!”
After hearing Brenda out, Kristen stopped frowning. “Then you’d better tell him to kick me out right now. I’d love that. By the way, could you please have him kick me out of his marriage as well so that you can be Mrs. Latham? Doesn’t it sound like a good idea to you?”
“Kristen, are you showing off?”
“Brenda, instead of wasting your time on me, why don’t you think of some way to get Marco to divorce me? In that way, you can be the official Mrs. Latham instead of an underground lover. A little kind reminder: Life can be hard for a mistress. Your children will be illegitimate and that’s kind of embarrassing.” Kristen meant what she said, without any contempt at all.
Kristen even wanted to bend down and beg Brenda to match up with Marco and vanish from Kristen’s life. Kristen didn’t want to be tortured by Marco anymore.
Perhaps it was because Brenda had spent so much time with Marco that it seemed hard for her to trust others. Brenda didn’t believe what Kristen said at all.
“Kristen, what are you mocking me for? Do you really think you are the wife while I’m the underground lover? Marco and I started seeing each other long before he met you. Haven’t you seen those bad comments from the Internet?”
Kristen glanced at her Brenda. Brenda only looked good when she pretended to be innocent. Yet when Brenda lost her temper, she looked like a mad ostrich, something far from being pretty.
Kristen started to question Marco’s taste as well as his eyesight. How could Marco not find out what Brenda truly looked like after all these years?
Kristen straightened a few things up and said, “I don’t care about those comments. If you are good, make Marco divorce me and kick me out.”
Kristen meant what she had said, yet, to Brenda, it sounded rather challenging.
If Brenda could persuade Marco to divorce Kristen, she would have done it. She couldn’t and that was why Brenda had to wait for Marco for a total of four years.
Brenda hated Kristen even more. Kristen no longer had her family to support her. What right did she have to challenge and mock Brenda?
“Leave him now if you still have self-respect. He doesn’t divorce because he sees you as a sex toy. He has never been in love with you.”
Kristen felt a sting and her face turned cold.
Brenda smiled provocatively and continued, “No matter how hard you try, Marco loves me, only me.”
Brenda even listed evidence to prove Marco’s love. “He goes to the movies with me. He squats to help me try on shoes. He cooks for me. He remembers my birthdays, buys me birthday gifts, and stays with me. He says sweet words to me. Has he done any of these for you?”
If Marco had done any of these, Kristen wouldn’t have been heartbroken. What Brenda had described was a Marco Kristen would die for.
Kristen wanted Marco to try to coax her with candy.
Kristen forced a smile and said coldly, “Even if he does love you as much as you have put it, he still hasn’t divorced me and married you. Brenda, since we are still married, you are still an underground lover. That is the difference between you and me.”
Brenda hated it when people called her an underground lover. “I am not! You took up apart!”
“Did I?” Kristen smiled. “Brenda, do I have to tell you what happened four years ago between you and me again?”
Brenda’s face instantly turned pale. She pursed her thin lips and could not help but step backward.
Kristen wouldn’t stop. “We both know why I ended up being Mrs. Latham and why you got into a car crash. You’ve had your chance four years ago yet you just threw it away. How can you blame me?”
“Besides, I’ve lost my interest in Marco. He’s a playboy and you are a *****. What a perfect couple you will make,” Kristen said softly.
Brenda said angrily, “What did you say?”
“What did you hear?” Kristen wasn’t the kind of person one wanted to mess up with, yet Brenda did. So, Kristen had to fight back.
“Brenda, try to serve Marco a little harder in bed so that you can relieve me from my burden.”
There was a timely knock on the door. It should be the delivery. Kristen didn’t feel like talking to Brenda anymore. Just as Kristen was about to leave, Brenda suddenly spoke in a sharp voice.
“Kristen, you are a bitch!”
Kristen stopped.
Brenda said with contempt, “Kristen, you are a stupid bitch. You gained nothing in the four-year marriage with Marco and you even lost all the property of the Lawrence family. By the way, do you know why your dad killed himself?”
Kristen’s face turned pale at once. She clenched her fists and forced herself to calm down. She asked in a hoarse voice, “Why?”
Brenda pursed her lips and revealed a sinister smile, “I did nothing but show your dad the news against you on the Internet. I also told him the news that the Lawrence family went bankrupt. I didn’t expect him to be so fragile that he committed suicide on his way to the second trial.”
Kristen’s eyes lost focus. She clenched her fists more tightly. She didn’t even notice that her nails got into her palms.
Brenda said, “It’s such a pity. Your dad seems to be no older than 50 this year. He died because of you. Are you happy to be together with Marco at the cost of your dad’s life?”
