Kristen felt so cold that her body was quivering. She could barely stand leaning against the wall.
Kristen knew that Marco had played a part in her father’s death, yet she didn’t expect the truth to be so brutal.
Kristen had paid a great cost. She sacrificed everything she had for something uncertain.
Brenda was gloating and she went on, “Kristen, aren’t you a *****? You deserve it! Now that the Lawrence family had collapsed, you are no better than a beggar. You are just an abandoned pet!”
Kristen looked at Brenda’s arrogant face and slapped Brenda in the face. Kristen made a big noise. Kristen slapped so hard that Brenda fell to the ground.
Brenda covered her face in disbelief. “How dare you slap me? Don’t you think I will tell…”
Before Brenda finished speaking, Kristen slapped her again.
Kristen slapped Brenda so hard that even her hand turned red. Kristen’s eyes were full of coldness. “You well deserve the slaps. I should have done it yesterday. You wronged me!”
Brenda burst out crying. The tears were of both pain in her face and anger in her chest. Sitting on the ground, Brenda pointed at Kristen and yelled, “Kristen, bitch!”
Brenda looked pitiful. Kristen stared at the tears on her chin and smiled coldly. “Brenda, stop crying. It works for Marco but not me!”
Brenda was so angry that she rushed over to fight with Kristen, but before she could even reach Kristen, Kristen kicked her to the side.
“Get out of my way,” Kristen said.
When Kristen left, she was still mocking Brenda, “Who do you think you are?”
Even if Kristen had come down in the world, Brenda had no right to laugh at her. Kristen only had two years to live. She didn’t mind cutting any ties.
Brenda clenched her teeth. After being ridiculed by Kristen, Brenda felt pain in her chest.
When Kristen went to get the takeout, she thought that Brenda was so weak that Marco could probably kill her in two punches. Then Kristen found herself ridiculous. Marco probably wouldn’t even stand the idea of hurting Brenda.
Kristen ordered some oatmeal. When she entered the room with the food box, Brenda was already gone. Kristen was happy to be alone. However, when Kristen thought of what Brenda had said, she had lost her appetite.
After getting slapped, Brenda would definitely not let Kristen get away. As expected, Kristen got a call from Marco after she had done with the oatmeal.
Kristen picked up the phone and heard Marco’s cold voice. “Did you slap Brenda?”
Marco seldom called Kristen. This time, he called to find fault with Kristen in defense of Brenda. “How pathetic,” thought Kristen.
“She deserved it.”
“Kristen, it seems that you’ve forgotten your lesson from yesterday. You know her physical condition. She has a bleeding disorder…”
“Is she dead?” Kristen asked. “Marco, you know my physical condition very well. I was fine even though you treated me like that yesterday. And now Brenda can’t even take two slaps from me?”
Marco tried to hold his anger back. “Is that why you slapped Brenda?”
“I slapped her because she asked for it. She came to me to find fault. If it weren’t for the fact that she was your lover, she wouldn’t even have lived to tell you the tale.”
Marco was furious. “How dare you? Kristen, did you forget how your father died?”
If Marco hadn’t mentioned Kristen’s father, Kristen wouldn’t have recalled what Brenda said about her father’s death. Kristen’s eyes were full of tears and she could barely breathe. She couldn’t help but cry and sniff.
“Marco, thank you for the reminder. I did not forget how my dad died, and I did not forget how you forced him to death!”
Marco fell into silence for some time and all Kristen got was “Let’s talk after I come back.”
“Talk to your ***!” Kristen hung up.
What could Marco say? Would he explain to Kristen? No, he was too arrogant and willful to do that. He did what he did and that was it. He would not concede his mistakes and would never care to explain.
Besides… Would his explanation even work?
Kristen sat in the living room for a while. In the end, she couldn’t stand the silence, so she turned on the TV to the maximum.
Kristen randomly found a comedy to watch. The actors in the comedy looked exaggerating. Everyone was trying to play a clown. The movie had made Kristen laugh over and over again, yet it failed her this time. Touching her blank face, Kristen realized that she wasn’t the happy girl she used to be.
