“Investment project?” Kristen furrowed her brows and was skeptical of Darin’s words. “If he had business acumen, Grandfather would not have handed Lawrence Group to me,” she thought.
“Make the transfer right now. I need the money now.”
Kristen replied, “I can give you money, but you have to send me the information of the investment project for me to look through.”
Darin felt that he was controlled by his daughter. He was embarrassed, so he cursed at Kristen for being a nuisance. He said he should have aborted her before she was born. After saying some harsh words, he began sadfishing again.
A slap with a candy. Kristen was already used to this kind of trick. After listening to what he said, she only replied, “Is there anything else? I’m busy. If not, I’ll hang up.”
“Don’t hang up. Don’t. I’ll send you the information.” Darin shouted and was afraid that Kristen would change her mind.
After hanging up the phone, Kristen stayed by the computer. Not long after, she received a document from Darin. She sent it to her assistant and asked her to print a copy and make her a cup of coffee.
As Kristen got the copy, she began to look through it. She only stopped reading when a cup of hot coffee was sent to her table. The coffee gave off a pleasant aroma. Kristen took a sip of it, which was the finest Blue Mountain coffee. The aftertaste was great, but it was bitter.
Kristen was fond of sweetness and hated bitterness. In the past, before she ate a pill, she would put sugar in her mouth. Now, she had to rely on bitter coffee to keep her spirits up.
After taking a sip, she put it down and continued to read the documents in her hand.
The target of Darin’s investment was real estate. He got a special plan, a certificate, and a team that seemed reliable. Kristen hadn’t read the documents for more than half an hour before Darin called to urge.
The assistant knocked on the door. Kristen, who was answering the phone let her in and signaled her to speak.
The assistant said, “Ms. Lawrence, Dr. Balan is waiting for you downstairs.”
“Why is Antonio here?” Kristen wondered. Now she had no time to care about Darin. After telling him that ‘I got it’, she hung up.
“Go down and invite him up. Find someone to make a cup of tea and bring it in.”
During the time when the assistant went to invite Antonio, Kristen transferred 300,000 dollars to Darin’s account.
Kristen kept staring at her phone for a long time but did not receive any thanks from her father. She laughed at herself and threw her phone on the table.
“Ms. Lawrence, Dr. Balan is here.”
The office door was not closed. When Kristen saw Antonio come in, she waved at her assistant to signal her to go out.
“Take a seat here,” Kristen said as she stood up. Her office was very large and had a special reception area by the French window. She led Antonio to sit on the sofa there.
As soon as Antonio came in, he smelled a strong coffee. He followed the smell and saw the half-drunk coffee on the table. He frowned and asked, “Why are you drinking coffee?”
“Can’t I?” Kristen pushed the tea on the table in his direction and asked casually. “Why are you here today?”
Antonio sat down and said, “Looks like you’ve forgotten everything I told you last night.”
Kristen’s outstretched hand froze for a moment. She retracted her hand and sat quietly on the sofa. Her head was lowered, looking like a child who had done something wrong.
“Anyhow, today you have to go to the hospital with me.”
Kristen lifted her head and did not look at Antonio. Instead, she looked at the withered plant beside her. She moved her lips and asked, “Go there to do what?”
“Take a detailed examination, confirm the treatment plan, and stay in the hospital.”
Antonio carefully sized up Kristen. He had not seen Kristen for less than a month, but she had become so thin. He could not imagine how she who was rather afraid of needles in the past could endure the pain of stomach cancer.
Kristen shook her head. The hair on her forehead hid the emotions in her eyes. “Antonio, my illness is like this pot of plant. The root has already rotted and cannot be cured no matter how.”
“Kristen, how do you know it can’t be cured without trying? You can work day and night, and you can try to please a man who doesn’t love you for four years, but why can’t you spend a little time on your health?” Antonio felt pity for Kristen. She was only twenty-four years old.
She should be healthy, happy, energetic, and enjoying the best life instead of being trapped in her boring marriage and endless work. However, she had to endure the torture brought to her by cancer.
Antonio walked to Kristen and touched her head like he did many times in the past. “Medicine is advanced now. As long as you don’t give up on the treatment, there will be…” He suddenly stopped speaking halfway because he saw Kristen’s eyes turn red.
Kristen stroked the withered leaves with her right hand and muttered, “Then tell me what the chances of surviving the surgery are. 50%, 20%, or 0.1%?”
Antonio pursed his thin lips and did not answer.
“Forget it.” Kristen’s cracked lips curled into a smile. “Don’t tell me. You know, you’d better not give me that little hope.”
She understood what Antonio meant. Who didn’t want to live and have a healthy body? But she had never heard that a person who had late-stage gastric cancer could survive.
Kristen exerted force with her right hand, then the withered leaf shattered and fell to the ground through her fingers.
