Marco sat on the sofa and waited quietly. He didn’t even eat lunch. At one o’clock, his phone rang.
He looked at his phone and found that it was an unknown caller. He picked it up. “Hello?”
“Marco, I am in the hospital right now.”
Marco said coldly, “I thought you had forgotten how to make a phone call.”
Kristen didn’t say anything in response. Marco frowned and asked, “Which hospital are you in?”
Kristen replied, “The City Hospital.”
“My words keep falling on deaf ears!” This time, without waiting for Kristen to answer, Marco directly hung up. He gripped his phone and car keys tightly and left the villa.
In the hospital.
Kristen was a little dazed. She held the phone for a long time. When she put down her phone, the screen was already dark.
Kristen frowned slightly and looked a little gloomy. Suddenly, she sensed someone approaching. She looked up and saw Antonio walking to her.
“You’ve called him?” Antonio asked.
“Yes.” Kristen nodded and returned the phone to Antonio.
Antonio took the phone and looked at it. He asked, “What did he say?”
Kristen shook her head and pretended to be calm as she said, “It’s fine. Don’t worry.”
Antonio pulled the chair over and sat down. He said seriously, “Look at the wounds on your body. How can I not worry?”
“Marco will pick me up from the hospital later.”
Antonio suddenly stopped speaking. There was a gloomy silence in the ward.
Kristen was lost in her thoughts for a while. Then she said, “Antonio, you should go.”
There was a gentle smile on her face. “For my good as well as yours, stay away from me. Don’t try to confront Marco. I promise you that I will take care of myself and I’ll be fine unless my illness flares up.”
It was her cancer that was going to kill her, not Marco.
Kristen’s eyes were filled with guilt. She recalled Antonio’s last injury, which was caused by Marco. She did not even have the time to apologize because she was afraid that her action would anger Marco.
After that, she did not even dare to call Antonio for fear of implicating him.
“I’m sorry for your hand injury. It was all my fault.”
Antonio said, “It has nothing to do with you.”
But Kristen still felt guilty. She looked at Antonio’s hands and asked, “Will there be any sequelae?”
Antonio was a surgeon, and his hands were very important for his career.
“I’m fine. It’s just a dislocation. It only took me two days to recover. You see? I’m all right now.” He waved his hand to show that he was totally fine now.
Kristen was still a little scared when she thought of what had happened last time. She knew that Marco was possessive, but now he found that he was also crazy.
Kristen changed the subject. “Can you give me more medicine and put it in different bottles?”
Antonio stood up. “I’ll go get it for you, but are you still going to hide it from Marco?”
The smile on Kristen’s face slowly turned bitter. “You also saw how he treated me. He didn’t care whether I was sick or not. Besides, I have already lied to him once before. He will not believe me anymore.”
After hearing this, Antonio turned to get the medicine. Kristen leaned against the bed and looked at the birds flying outside. A turtledove landed on a thin branch. The branch could not withstand its weight and swayed in the air.
But the turtledove did not fly away. It continued to stand there as if it was on a see-saw. Kristen looked at it thoughtfully.
What the bird believed in was never the branch but its own wings. Like the bird, if she wanted to live a good life, she could not rely on others.
Antonio came back and gave Kristen the medicine. There were two bottles of newly developed anti-cancer medicine and two bottles of strong painkillers. The bottle of the anti-cancer medicine read stomach medicine, and the painkiller was put in the bottle of supplements.
“The dosage is the same as usual.”
Kristen took it and said, “Thank you.” She opened the bottle and confirmed the medicine inside. “How much is it?”
“You don’t need to pay me. We’ve known each other for so many years. I can’t even help you in this situation.”
“That’s not true…”
Antonio petted her head. “You are in a difficult situation now. All that I can do for you is to give you medicine. You have to fight on your own for so many other things.”
Tears welled up in Kristen’s eyes. She took a deep breath and tried to hold back her tears. “Thank you.”
She was grateful that in the last year of her life, there was still someone who cared about her and warmed her heart.
Antonio treated her very well. In the past twenty years, he was by her side for a very long time, even longer than her father and brother. Antonio filled in the gap of kinship that she didn’t have. Sometimes she even wondered why Antonio was not her biological brother.
Kristen was not a person of sentiment. She accepted the medicine and said, “Antonio, I have made up my mind.”
“About what?”
“I want Marco to fall in love with me.”
Antonio was confused. He couldn’t keep up with Kristen’s train of thought. He knew that he shouldn’t say this, but he could help it.
“Kristen, don’t tell me that you still like Marco.”
