This result was even more unbelievable than the stage IV stomach cancer she found before.
Kristen read the examination report in her hand carefully even though there were only three pages. The only sound in the room was the sound of paper rustling.
The doctor sitting in front of Kristen was entering the results on her computer. Seeing Kristen was still staring at the report, she asked patiently, “Ms. Lawrence, do you have any other questions?”
Kristen shook her head and said, “This is impossible. How can I be pregnant?”
“Your progesterone is relatively low. Did you have any signs of miscarriage a few days ago?”
“I thought it was my period.”
The doctor couldn’t help but frown when she heard Kristen’s words. She looked Kristen up and down, and said, “Are you married?”
Kristen replied honestly, “I’ve been married for four years.”
“After four years of marriage, can’t you distinguish between pregnancy and menstruation?”
In fact, Kristen knew the difference, but she had never thought about getting pregnant. Her menstrual period had always been irregular. In addition, during their four years of marriage, Marco had thought that she was dirty and refused to let her get pregnant, so they had always taken contraceptives.
Contraceptives…
Kristen was stunned. She finally found the reason. After she checked her stomach cancer, she was afraid that the contraceptive pill would influence her treatment, so she did not take it anymore, while Marco did not take any measures for the next few times.
Kristen asked, “Doctor, how many weeks have I been pregnant?”
“Five weeks.”
Kristen calculated the time. She got pregnant the first time they did it after she had been discharged from the hospital. They only did it once, but she got pregnant.
Kristen was listless. She lowered her head and unconsciously moved her lips, “How could I be pregnant…”
The doctor thought Kristen’s words were ridiculous, because Kristen had asked this question many times. She said, “From the perspective of physiology, you do have the ability to get pregnant. Besides, you have been married for four years. It is time to get pregnant.”
Kristen’s body was numb before, but now even her brain was confused. She just sat on the chair and saw the doctor’s mouth opening and closing.
In short, she was absolutely pregnant.
“Can I abort?” Kristen asked.
The doctor thought Kristen was just worried about miscarriage. She picked up the thermos cup and drank some water to moisten her throat, “The progesterone can be adjusted. Don’t be afraid. As long as you pay more attention to your health, you won’t have a miscarriage.”
“I don’t want the child.”
There could be many reasons why a woman didn’t want a child. This was her private matter, so the doctor couldn’t ask too much, but she persuaded Kristen, “Why don’t you discuss this with your husband? Since you suffer poor health, I don’t suggest you have a miscarriage,” There was a risk of miscarriage, and many girls would find it difficult to conceive again because of the weak uterine wall after scraping the uterus.
“Discuss with Marco?” Kristen felt bitter when she heard this. She thought, “Marco did not even care about me, so why would he care about the child in my belly?”
She thought that if he knew that she was pregnant by accident, she might not even need to come to the hospital, because he would just give her a pill, and it would be more dangerous then.
Just thinking that Marco would curse her and her child, she felt heartache. She clenched the examination report in her hand and let out a heavy sigh.
“Why don’t you discuss with Dr. Balan later?” the doctor knew that Kristen and Antonio were in a good relationship. She thought maybe Antonio could persuade Kristen to keep the child.
There was suddenly a knock on the door outside.
The doctor looked over and saw Antonio’s face through the window of the door.
Antonio slowly pushed open the door after receiving a response, “What’s the result?”
The doctor pointed at the computer, “See for yourself later,” she thought since Antonio had come, she didn’t need to be here anymore. She got up and said, “The patient in bed No. 50 needs me. I’ll go over and check the situation first. I’ll leave this to you.”
Antonio went over and sat at the computer desk, “Go ahead. I’ll call you if there’s anything.”
The doctor nodded and left.
The computer screen was black, so Antonio didn’t see the results of the examination. However, he saw that Kristen looked awful. He thought, “Is she seriously ill?”
He turned on the computer and looked at the information that Kristen had been pregnant for five weeks.
“Kristen, are you pregnant?” Antonio was a little surprised. For a moment, he didn’t know how he felt. It was both sweet and bitter, because the girl whom he had known since they were kids would become a mother soon.
He took the examination report from Kristen’s hand and read it through carefully. There were no other symptoms except for the low progesterone.
“I’ll prescribe you some medicine to nourish your body. Don’t worry,” Antonio sighed, “I’m finally going to be an uncle.”
“Antonio, I can’t have this child.”
Kristen thought, “It’s not that I don’t want it, but I can’t. My current situation doesn’t allow me to have a child at all.”
“Why?”
“I have cancer. I don’t even know how long I can live. Maybe I will pass away tomorrow.”
“What nonsense are you talking about? The medicine you are taking now is a newly-developed anti-cancer medicine. Medicine is improving, and you have to be positive. Maybe tomorrow there’s a medicine that can cure your illness.”
Every time they talked about Kristen’s condition, they were serious.
“Antonio, I don’t dare to gamble. This child comes at the wrong time. He shouldn’t have appeared in my belly.”
“But he has already appeared. Do you want to throw him away? Kristen, didn’t you like children very much in the past? Keep him alive,” Antonio held Kristen’s hand and pleaded.
Kristen’s hands trembled coldly. She clenched her fists so hard but she couldn’t hide her trembling. She shook her head and was about to cry, “Then do you want him to lead a life like me? It is a mistake for him to be born. No one would care or love him.”
If she was healthy, she would definitely keep this child, but she was not!
She thought, “What if I pass away the moment I give birth to this child? Then what about the child? Am I going to give him to Marco and Brenda?”
If so, she was afraid that her child would lead a life that was worse than death, and just thinking about it made her shiver.
Antonio didn’t want Kristen to be too pessimistic. Now that she had a child, Antonio hoped that this would be a motivation for her to live.
