Although she had used contraceptives in the past four years, Kristen often got gynecological check-ups. She was ready to get pregnant, but Marco did not give her the chance.
Later, she was diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer. She could not bear another life?
Someone said that children are the anchors that hold a mother to life. But for her, a child was an anchor causing her to sink.
Antonio knew that she liked children. After all, she used to tell him what it would be like to have a baby.
Kristen stared at her belly blankly. She reached out to touch her belly and mourned her unborn baby.
Kristen said firmly, “Antonio, I want to have an abortion. If you don’t help me, I’ll go to another hospital.”
Antonio took back his hand and stared at the computer. “You can’t have an abortion in that condition. You need to rest for half a month. Please think about it during this time.”
She had made up her mind, but Antonio also insisted that she could not have an abortion operation today.
They fell silent. Kristen stared at the inspection report on the table and then looked at Antonio.
She noticed that Antonio looked pale and tired.
She thought that he looked bad because of the light on the computer screen, but now she found that it was not.
“Did you sleep well recently?” She touched her chin. “You look tired.”
Antonio touched his face. “Really?”
Kristen nodded. “Your skin was good before. Now you have dark circles and bags under your eyes.”
“The recent cases are complicated, so we’ve been having meetings these days,” Antonio explained evasively. Then, he saw Oliver standing outside. He pointed and changed the topic. “Who is he?”
“I just met him today. He sent me to the hospital.”
“He looks silly.” Antonio wanted to say “stupid”, but changed the word.
Kristen said gently, “He is an orphan. He had a severe head injury and suffered from mental deficiency.”
“Does he need a brain scan?”
“It depends on him, but I don’t think it will work. It’s been fifteen years.”
“Fifteen years…” Antonio frowned, “That’s tricky.”
Brains had the most complicated structure. It was difficult to fix it like a machine.
Kristen asked Antonio, “He is somehow familiar to me. Have I seen him before?”
“Are you asking me?”
Kristen said, “I just wanted to ask if you had any impression of him.”
Antonio looked at Oliver. He had to admit that Oliver had a charming face.
Antonio thought for a while and shook his head. “I haven’t seen him. You probably haven’t seen him either. You haven’t been to an orphanage when you were a child.”
Kristen sighed and felt somewhat empty.
Antonio input the rest of the information into the computer. “Kristen, I wanted to tell you about this later…”
“Tell me what?”
Antonio looked serious. She felt uneasy.
Antonio replied, “I want to go abroad.”
“So suddenly? For how long?”
“I’m not sure,” Antonio replied as he typed.
Kristen asked, “Why are you going abroad?”
“For my cancer research.”
“Are you going because of me?”
Antonio stopped and glanced at her. “Don’t flatter yourself. I am serving the people.”
Kristen felt a sense of loss. “So sudden.” He might research for at least one to two years, or even more than ten years.
“It wasn’t sudden. The medicine I gave you was new. You were the first to take it, which meant that you were my experimental subject. By the way, after I left, you need to come to the hospital every month to draw blood, which is significant to our research.”
Kristen frowned and said sadly, “I thought you went abroad because of me, but now I find that I’m a test subject.”
Antonio was so angry that he laughed. He reached out and pinched her face. “Cheeky girl.”
Kristen smiled to hide her loneliness. She did not expect that Antonio, who grew up with her, would leave.
Antonio looked a little unnatural. “I’ve arranged another attending doctor for you. She knows your condition and you can look for her if you feel ill.”
Kristen laid on the table and whispered, “You arranged everything in advance. So you have planned to go abroad?”
She was wrong. Antonio only made his plan these two days. The Balan family was in trouble and Macro caught him off guard. He could only leave the country for the time being.
Antonio dared not to tell Kristen about this. He was afraid that she would feel guilty and kick against the pricks.
“Forget it. We’ll meet Dr. Shaffer later.”
