Marco was not sure whether his body was colder or whether his heart was colder now. The hottest month of the year, but he broke into a cold sweat. He felt like he had fallen into ice water.
Maritza went in and asked, “How’s it going?”
The doctor who was holding a knife was surprised to see her. “Doctor Shaffer, what are you doing here?”
“I am her attending physician. The patient has stage IV stomach cancer.”
As soon as Maritza said that, all the medical staff present froze.
Kristen was in a daze and saw someone open the door. She shuddered but not because of the cold.
Kristen felt familiar with the voice. It was only when the person came closer that Kristen recognized it was Maritza.
Kristen’s wet eyelashes flickered and she opened her dry lips. She murmured something when Maritza walked to her front.
There was a layer of white fog in the oxygen mask. Kristen was so weak. Her voice was too small to be heard, but Maritza knew what she meant.
“You did great.” She knew that Kristen was afraid of pain. If she had known that this would happen, she would have performed the surgery for Kristen last time.
Maritza took off Kristen’s clothes and began to stop the bleeding. She suddenly frowned and found that other than the miscarriage, Kristen had a lot of other injuries.
Was it domestic violence that caused Kristen’s miscarriage?
Maritza always remained calm no matter what happened. However, when she saw Kristen like this, she raged.
Maritza was hugely against domestic violence.
Maritza tried to focus on the operation. As time passed, beads of sweat started to appear on her forehead.
The nurse wiped her sweat and Maritza said in a low voice, “Let the people outside sign the notice of the critical condition. The patient’s condition is dangerous. Massive hemorrhage. Her blood type is AB Rh-negative. Is there any in the blood bank?”
This type of blood was extremely rare. Maritza was calm before she came in here, but when the blood could not be stopped, she started to panic.
If only Kristen was someone with a normal blood type.
“We don’t have that type of blood in our hospital. I checked the blood bank yesterday.” The nurse beside Maritza said anxiously. If there was no blood supply, Kristen would die from excessive blood loss.
Maritza bit her lip. “Call the other hospitals. Now!”
Two nurses ran out of the emergency room. One went to make the phone call, and the other held the notice of the critical condition for Marco to sign.
It is said that when people were about to die, their memory of the past would appear in front of their eyes like a slideshow. One figure after another floated past Kristen’s mind.
Kristen’s blood kept flowing out on the operating table, leaving a dazzling red.
…
Marco did not know what was going on inside. He was a little uneasy. He looked at the clock on the wall again. Fifteen minutes had passed.
At that moment, two nurses came out, and one of them walked towards him with a piece of paper in her hand.
Marco had good eyesight. He saw the words “notice of the critical condition”.
“How is she? Is the baby okay?”
The nurse was anxious and angry. She didn’t understand why this man was still thinking about the baby while his wife was in a critical condition.
The nurse threw the notice of the critical condition to Marco. “Sign it. We can’t save the baby, and now your wife is in a serious condition.”
Marco’s heart beat wildly, and his blood seemed to get cold at that moment. He suppressed the trembling of his voice and asked in a low voice, “What do you mean?”
The nurse took a deep breath and suppressed her anger. She tried to remain calm and said, “The patient has lost too much blood. Her blood type is unique. We don’t have any supplies in the hospital.”
Massive loss of blood was tricky to handle, let alone Kristen had a rare blood type.
Marco was shocked. He knew how serious it was. Now only Brenda could donate blood to Kristen.
He suddenly recalled that a month ago Kristen had asked him a question in a hoarse voice in the hospital.
“Brenda and I have the same blood type. If one day I’m about to die from excessive blood loss, will you let her donate blood to me?”
Marco never took a hypothesis seriously, and he never thought that one day he would actually let Brenda risk her life donating blood to Kristen.
The nurse did not know what Marco was thinking. She shoved the notice of the critical condition to him and urged him to sign it quickly.
Marco looked at the notice in his arms and his heart was beating like a drum. He quickly took out his phone and called Brenda.
“Brenda, I need your blood…”
