“Where are you going, Matt?”
Ethan’s voice sounded in the living room as Matt walked up to the door, making the girls look up from Chloe’s phone. Matt turned his head back as he fixed his scarf.
“Um… work.”
“Come on man, really?” Ethan said in disbelief. “If you’re going to lie, at least make it believable! Let’s face it, we all know you don’t have work today, not on a Sunday.”
Matt internally yelled at himself for his stupidity.
“Also, the spring semester won’t start until two weeks later,” Chloe added. “And we sure don’t need more groceries.”
Matt gulped as he sweated, glancing back and forth as if a reasonable explanation could be found somewhere in the room. He crouched down and tried to think, hoping that he would think of something good by the time he had finished tying his shoes.
“Oh, I know! Is it a date with a special someone?”
Not now, Eve! Matt’s mind was in panic upon hearing her assumption. Eve usually didn’t have anything to say on matters like this, but when she did, her remark would be either shocking or funny, or both. Why did it have to be right now? And why did it have to be today, right at this hour, that he had to go?
Knowing that his suitemates would question him as soon as they saw him heading to the door, he had tried to sneak out as quietly as possible. Unfortunately, he wasn’t stealthy enough and couldn’t escape from Ethan’s vision-how could he even see him when his eyes were clearly glued to the TV? But then again, when was he ever stealthy?
“Oh my god!” Ethan gasped and put his hands on his cheeks, squealing like a fangirl because he knew it would annoy Matt even more. “Is it true, Matty?”
“Hey, it might even be that cute guy he met at his workplace!”
Chloe’s words shot through Matt’s poor little heart. A critical hit too, on top of that.
“Hey, hey, am I right?” Chloe teased in a singsong voice, a grin clearly seen on her face. “I must be, because you’re awfully quiet right now, Matt.”
Taking a deep breath, Matt stood up carefully in order not to stumble due to his shaking body. He turned back and tried to speak calmly, not surprised by their expecting look and ear-to-ear grin.
“I’m going to help Professor Angevine with some stuff as his TA.”
With just that, he opened the door and quickly walk outside, too much in a hurry to actually close it carefully. He ended up slamming the door a little too harshly in front of his friends, who then stared at each other in confusion.
“Just meeting up with our professor?” Ethan raised his eyebrow. “Then why didn’t he just tell us right away?”
“Yeah.” Chloe leaned back to the couch in dissapointment. “He was acting so suspiciously that I thought he’s actually going out with a guy.”
They just shrugged and went back to what they were doing, Ethan watching his favorite show and Chloe checking out cute outfits on Instagram with Eve. Everything was going fine, the only sounds in the room being the TV and the girls’ little chatter, until exactly one minute and twenty-six seconds passed.
“Wait…”
Ethan began, and coincidentally, that was also when the other two perked their head up in realization.
“Did he just say ‘as his TA’?”
The way they all spoke the same words was such a perfect and flawless sync.
…__________…
The moment Matt had successfully slammed the door close was like a weight being lifted from his shoulders. As his heart slowed its pace, he had to lean back against the door to take a deep breath and calm his shaking body down. But then, he decided that he shouldn’t waste any time and was now walking hurriedly down the stairs. One second late and he was sure his suitemates would come running after him and drown him in their sea of questions.
Looking at his phone to check the address he was given, he couldn’t help rereading the texts his professor had sent him. He couldn’t believe that about twenty minutes ago, he was just making some snacks in the kitchen and was about to join Ethan on the couch when his phone buzzed. He had nearly dropped his phone in surprise upon seeing that the sender was Professor Angevine, and for a second, he thought that his eyes were mistaken.
Well, if they had been, that would have meant he was so in love with his professor that he mistook someone else’s name for his, which would have been a seriously issue to take care of.
With trembling hands, he eagerly opened the messages like he had never been sent a message before and carefully read each word. Needless to say, when he saw that his professor had asked him to help him with some things, his heart felt like it could jump out from his rib at any given moment. Not only that, but his professor even asked if he could come to his house since the university wasn’t open.
To think about it, he did question why it had to be right now, and it was only at this moment that he realized it was his fault in the first place. Professor Angevine never pressured him into coming right away. On the contrary, he was very considerate and actually gave him an option to choose another time to meet up. Driven by excitement (and possibly desperation), he replied that he was available and would arrive soon.
After receiving the address, he ran into his room and boy, he had never cared more for his looks in his entire life. He literally inspected every strand of his hair, making sure that every one of them was in order, before he moved on to his outfit. Having looked all over in his messy pile of clothes and trying on multiple outfits, he finally got what he wanted after the umpteenth time-a white shirt underneath a blue checkered one and black jeans. It was simple but not unfashionable.
Fixing his scarf and coat, he saw the bus coming and got on it. His professor’s place was about ten minutes away from his dorm, and those minutes he all spent thinking about what he was supposed to do when he was there. He knew he should greet his professor, obviously, but what should he say after the hello? Awkward moments were always the bane of his existence and he was sure everyone shared the same pain. And how should he behave? Should he be professional like always or more casual, since they weren’t on campus? Ten minutes wasn’t enough to let him think everything through. Before he realized it, he had reached his destination.
Ringing the doorbell had never been such a difficult task until now. But it was worth it, because when the door opened, his eyes were blessed.
Professor Angevine was in a long-sleeved dark blue pullover and a white shirt underneath. He dressed in a way that looked so comfy and cute that it nearly made Matt gasp in pure happiness.
“Good morning, Matthew!” His professor looked really happy to see him, and it was never a bad thing. “I’m glad you can come.”
“It’s nothing, professor! I’m your TA after all.” Matt beamed before remembering what had happened at his dorm, which made him scratch the back of his neck as he chuckled nervously. “Speaking of TA, my roommates are probably screaming back at my place because of the sudden news.”
“Well, at least you told them, right?” Professor Angevine let out a little laugh before gesturing his hand towards the inside of his house. “Come in, Matthew. It’s cold outside.”
“Thank you, professor.”
Matt returned his professor’s smile as he walked past him and took a chance to look around. From the outside, the house already looked like a fine place with white walls, black roof and a porch. But on the inside, it looked a lot better, cozy even. From the moment he stepped into it, he could already feel the inviting atmosphere and see that the rooms were well-furnished with nearly all the essential things. He even had small plants placed here and there, giving the place a refreshing look.
“Wow.” He couldn’t help gasping. “Your house’s so nice, professor.”
“I’m happy you like it,” Professor Angevine said as he closed the door. “You know, I was planning to go to a coffee shop instead. But paperworks can get very messy, so a shop’s small table isn’t really suitable for it.”
“Paperworks?” Matt turned his head back. “What are we working on today?”
“Oh, right, I haven’t told you, have I? Silly me.” His professor chuckled, titling his head to the side as he did so. Matt secretly wanted to tell him not to do that again if he didn’t want his student to faint. “I want you to help with the materials for the next semester.”
“So I get to see the whole thing first before everyone else.” Matt had playful grin on his lips. “I feel very special right now.”
“You should.” Professor Angevine gave him a smile as he crossed his arms. “Anyway, let’s go, shall we? I’ll show you my office.”
Matt nodded and was then led up the stairs, passing by a room that he guessed was the bedroom. As soon as his professor opened the door, he found himself stunned once more by how everything was so organized, all the things neatly placed at their designated spot. How come his professor was so good at keeping his room in order while he sometimes could go into panic mode because he couldn’t find his textbook in his messy pile? He made a mental note to learn from the older man.
Before anything else, Professor Angevine gave himself and Matt a cup of hot cocoa, and the latter was very grateful for it. They then proceeded to work, his professor whole-heartedly helping Matt with everything he needed to know. It was a cozy and precious moment, them sitting side by side at his professor’s desk at his own place, working together with hot drinks by their side on a chilly day.
Sometimes, when Professor Angevine was explaining the materials, Matt would find himself unconciously sneaking a glance over him, taking in his beautiful eyes filled with enthusiasm and his never-fading smile. And from time from time, he would also catch his professor staring briefly at him, and he would turn away a few seconds later, thinking that his student wasn’t looking.
