Friends are what everyone needs. If they’re genuine, they will be our companions who help us get through the ups and downs of life. They will lend an ear to listen to our troubles, show their sympathy and not hesitate to give all the good advice they have.
But then, they can be a freaking tease as well.
“Oh my gosh! My baby grows up so fast!”
I’m not a baby, Matt thought, letting out a sigh of utter annoyance as Ethan’s words rung in his mind all of a sudden. He recalled that moment where Ethan was basically suffocating him in what he called a “hug”. He couldn’t believe that such a man was capable of squealing like a child just after literally holding him hostage at the door.
That day, Matt had just come back to his dorm from Professor Angevine’s place, and he had already prepared himself for the upcoming interrogation from his suitemates. But what he wasn’t expecting was Ethan slamming his hands on the door, trapping him and questioning him with a low voice. It was as if Matt had just committed a serious crime, which could be the fact that he was now their professor’s TA.
But just after Matt gave his answer, which was a yes, Ethan’s personalities did a one eighty and he turned into an excited girl who just saw a unicorn. And on top of that, he called Matt a baby. A freaking baby, Matt groaned internally, asking why everyone had to call him that at least once in their life. Do I have a baby face or what?
Sighing again, he calmed himself down and brushed it off, as he thought it wasn’t something worth getting worked up with. He should instead appreciate the fact that he got to come to his favorite professor’s place more in the future, so it made up for all the teasing from his friends.
Speaking of his professor, he was taking quite long, wasn’t he? The spring semester had just started a few weeks ago and Professor Angevine needed Matt to help him with a representation, asking him to wait for him in front of the university. Matt gladly did as what he was told, but it had been about fifteen minutes and the said older man had yet to come. Matt leaned back against the big column of his college’s gate, looking at the way the leaves rustled, emitting a relaxing sound.
To think about it, how long had they known each other? Half a year now? He couldn’t believe that it had been that long and he hadn’t been able to work up any courage to confess to him. Of course, he had thought about it, but the risks behind it scared him.
He was still in his sophomore year, so it was still too early to actually start considering a relationship with his own professor. Besides, most people chose to tell their feelings after they had left college, when they no longer had to worry about the professionalism between students and professors. Therefore, he found dating his professor when he was nowhere near his graduation a little strange. And what if he weirded his professor out? If he ever did that, then he had no way to run to, simply because they would still meet in class or on campus. That would be the definition of hell itself.
Too deep in his thoughts, he was startled when he heard footsteps approaching him. Expecting to see his professor, he put up a smile to hide the doubts swimming in his head, but who he actually saw turned that smile into a frown.
“Happy to see me, cutie?”
Matt crossed his arms, looking away in annoyance. This girl again, oh how he hated her high-pitch voice.
Beatrix also attended Professor Angevine’s class, but they never talked until recently, and Matt had despised her ever since. When their midterm grades were annouced a while ago, she said that she wasn’t satisfied with her C and wanted him to tutor her, since he got one of the highest scores. Amazed by her will to improve, he accepted her request right away but then found himself in utter disappointment. It was just an excuse to get him on a “date” and flirt with him, throwing the studious determination away. And if she wasn’t flirting with him, she would just check her phone, abandoning the reading materials as if she hadn’t asked him to help her study in the first place. After many times of seeing the same thing happening, he refused to meet up with her again. But man, was this girl persistent in trying to pursue him when he clearly was not interested.
“I’m not happy to see you.” He was unafraid to show that he was displeased with her presence. “I’m expecting someone else.”
“Aww…” She feigned innocence with puppy eyes. “Is it another girl?”
He wished he could have just turned into a wizard and made himself invisible so that he could get out of here right now. If she had made him lost his trust in her, then she was not worth his time.
“If you’ll excuse me, I have other business to take care of.”
He had turned on his heels, ready to walk away before she pulled on his sleeve. “W-Wait, please hear me out—”
“No, Beatrix, I’m done with you.”
“I’m sorry, Matt!” she pleaded with his nickname, which was something he could not accept. “I’ll focus on my studies for real this time. I promise!”
No, you’re not going to study. I’ve heard those empty words so many times that I’m tired of it. “Why do you keep asking me, anyway? It’s not like I’m the smartest guy on Earth.”
“Because I like you!”
Those words, which were usually heartfelt, had no effect on him. He wasn’t moved by them in any way, probably because he didn’t like her even as a classmate, or because he had had an impression that neither her words nor feelings were genuine. However, the main reason was still clear as day and he knew it deep in his mind. The only problem now was to reject her, but he was unsure how. It shouldn’t have been that difficult since he had already told her some crushing words, but he somehow did have some troubles deciding on what to say.
Had he asked someone what to do, they would have probably said “Just say you’re gay”, but he absolutely could not do it in this situation. Knowing Beatrix, she would probably get extremely bitter after the rejection, and if he told her that he was gay, she would go as far as to spread that news to the entire media. That would be too much to handle, so revealing his sexuality was out of the question.
What to say then… What to say… He frantically searched for an answer, trying to avoid her sad and pleading eyes in the process. In the moment of panic, he thought about the main reason he couldn’t date her.
The main reason…
Him…
Something clicked in his mind, and he began gathering his courage.
“I’m sorry, Beatrix, but I’m unable to accept your feelings.”
Her eyes were filled with shock and disbelief, as if no guy had ever had the guts to say no to her before. “Wh-Why? I… I gave you my heart…”
“I’m terribly sorry, but I—”
“How, how could you do this to me?”
“I just see you as a classmate, and—”
“Don’t you know how hurt I am right now?”
“And besides—”
“I’m a girl! I have feelings, you know!”
“Besides—”
“I, I can’t understand how you can be so calm while breaking my heart like this!”
This girl kept cutting him off, which broke the calmness he had been trying so hard to maintain.
“Besides, I already have another girl in my heart!”
He said loudly, emphasizing each word as if to prevent her from cutting him off again. He looked at her in the eyes, voice firm as tears began to form in her eyes. He felt no emotions towards those tears, no guilt whatsoever. But then, he caught something, or rather someone, in the corners of his eyes, making him look up and freeze.
Professor Angevine looked like he could drop the drinks in his hands at any given moment.
Beatrix ran off crying into her hands, but it wasn’t what Matt was worried about right now. It was his professor who was the source of his concerns. Exactly when he came here and how much of the conversation he had heard, Matt had no idea. But he knew he had to do something about this, even though he was unsure why.
As of now, he wasn’t anything other than his professor’s student, nothing more, so why did he somehow felt the need to explain the “I’ve already love another girl” part? It was probably because of how Professor Angevine looked right now—his face was pale, his mouth was agape and his eyes were widening in shock. But then again, why was he reacting that way? He hadn’t done anything extreme, and rejecting a girl was not one of them, at least from a professor’s perspective.
“P-Professor, you’re, you’re here!” He stumbled over his words, trying to sway the other man’s attention away from what he had just witnessed. “I was waiting for you!”
As if just being pulled back into reality, his professor spoke in a rushed tone. “Oh, I’m, I’m sorry for, for being late, Matthew. I forgot some things and had to go back. I, I hope this coffee will make up to you.”
Professor Angevine’s body was shaking rapidly, Matt could tell when he took the hot cup of coffee from his hand. Still trying to appear calm, his professor pretended to take a sip from his own cup and changed the subject.
“A-Anyway, let’s go to my office, sh-shall we?”
