“Eh… Is this really okay? I mean … she’s too your b-best f-friend.”
She stuttered at the word ‘best friend’ and stared at me carefully, as though making sure she did not make a mistake.
“Yuni.” I put my cup on the table and locked my eyes on her.
“You’re my only best friend. I know it’s too late to realize this, but—“
I gritted my lower lip.
“—I’m sorry. Could you please forgive me for my indifferent treatment towards you in the past?”
She flinched and hurriedly waved her hands as to ensure that it was alright.
“No, no! I do not feel worst at all! I know before that you treat me poorly because of Karina. And I don’t mad you at all.”
A smile appeared on her lips. She looked at me in bewilderment. Then, she continued,
“Actually, it’s not that I’m not completely sad about it when you ignored me, b-but it’s okay! I know we’re still friends!”
I did not miss the very slight frown on her face and the disappointment and longing look on her eyes. Then the small pout she did, which I found it adorable.
“Haa… Yuni, you’re too kind for me. Somehow, I don’t think we match at all.” I sighed.
“No! Luna is kind and she’s the greatest best friend I ever had!”
I narrowed my eyes and looked at her golden eyes which shone brightly.
It must be tough for Yuni to socialize with other ladies. It must be because of her gruesome personality that made her annoyed them. Yuni, despite looking adorable, she’s actually someone who likes to do what men do and things that looks like impudent for the other noble ladies. For example, riding horses, archery, climbing trees and playing swordsmanship.
That’s why she have little courage when doing these kinds of things especially in front of them. Because she knew that no one will like to befriend with an inappropriate lady. Karina knew this and that was why she worked so hard to separate and made us against each other. Everytime, she would whisper in my ear about how discourteous Yunifer is in secret.
“Oh dear, look at that Luna! She climbs the tree! I repeat, she climbs it with her dress on it! ” Karina shrieked shrilly, pointing her finger to Yunifer who was now trying so hard to climb the maple tree. “Oh my god! How un-lady-like!”
I, on the other hand, often would feel the blood was rising to my cheeks when anyone pointed that out. I was so embarrassed to have such a friend at that time that I naively thought the same: Yunifer really was an improper lady.
The other ladies too will talked behind Yunifer’s back so loud that they did not even try to hide their hostility towards her, as if they intended to let me hear it.
“How could Lady Lunaria befriended with that monke— ahem, I mean, Lady Yunifer? “
“Well, how could you know? Lady Yunifer and Lady Lunaria are best friends ever since they were children! “
“Lord, that Lady Lunaria befriended with that kind of person? ” asked a lady in disbelief.
“Oh yes, poor Lady Lunaria,” replied another lady who took out her handkerchief and pretended to sniff. “She must be ashamed of her. “
“Indeed, indeed. I personally think that Lady Karina is way much better than that monke— I mean, Lady Yunifer. “
“I know, right? She has some good sense in fashion and knows a lot about the trending topics that happens around!”
Karina who heard this, grinning from ear to ear, looking proudly. Her nostrils flared. But later, coughed when she saw the look on my face, pretending as if she never heard those words. She back to her usual dignified stance.
“Oooohhhhh! ” The ladies squealed.
They began chattering around comparing Yunifer and Karina brightly, thinking that I don’t hear every single word they spouted.
I had had enough. Around that time too, I joined the other ladies talking behind Yunifer’s back and talked trash about her so that they won’t think I befriended her because I wanted to, but because I have to, considering our families were pretty close. I also began to distance myself from her and behaved coldly.
“Yunifer didn’t know how to read because she had been practising sword for all her childhood time,” I told them.
“Oh my! ” The other ladies gasped in bewilderment.
“It’s true. I had seen her before trying to read the letter which Luna had sent, but she took a longer time to figure it out. Then, she asked her maid to read it aloud,” added Karina enthusiastically.
The other ladies thought that this was another serious issue and began to ask me for more information about what Yunifer lacks. With this, they could have another reasons to gossip more about her.
Of course, I, not wanting to humiliate myself, feed them every single news about it, even though they were false, so that they won’t think I sided with her. Yes, everything were incorrect.
I lied.
Yunifer knows how to write, spell and read letters. She had done it in front of my eyes before when we were together. Many times already. Of course I knew this because we had spent time together ever since we were little, so I know every single thing about her.
We were so close and shared a bond that could not shatter between us. So close that someone got cold feet and tried every means to separate us. In the end, Karina, the mastermind succeeded her goal.
In my last life, Yunifer had a tragic end. She was being assassinated by the order of someone. And I knew who it is. It was Rexiald.
He made it looked like an accident. People thought that Yunifer got attacked by a group of bandits and accidentally killed her during their attempt to rob her. This happened when she was on the way to my wedding ceremony: to expose Rexiald and Karina’s affair.
Of course, Rexiald who did not like it when things did not seem to go in his way, got impatient and immediately killed Yunifer. I should have known the moment where there were some strange things occurred to Yunifer, there will be a tragedy soon follow. And I was so hopeless. I never tried to warn her nor prevent the accident that took her life.
I raised my head after having been immersed in old memories for a moment, fixing my gaze on Yunifer who was now holding her teacup, staring at me intently and was on the edge of her seat, waiting for the next words that will soon coming from my mouth.
I lowered my gaze, not daring to look her in the eyes and whispered softly,
“…I’m sorry.”
I could feel my eyes were hot and my sight was blurry and there were tears racing down to my cheeks like a waterfall.
Yunifer gasped, shocked and looking petrified. She was white when she saw me suddenly broke into tears. She dashed towards me, pulling me into an embrace, patting my back. She comforted me with her lovely angelic voice.
“No, no, no. It’s okay, Luna. I know you are not doing this without any reason. I also know that you will always be my friend, even though you had think of abandoning me once. I’m grateful to have you. So don’t be sad, I’ll always beside you even though you will no longer need me.”
Those words felt like ringing in my ears. So she knew it after all. She knew that I acted differently towards her. Acting cold for no reason and staying away from her, talking behind her back and those dirty things I did.
Even though it was a cry that was unable to avoided, but in the midst of excruciating pain, I was afraid that Yunifer would withdrew her hand from patting back my back.
I had never been so foolish for all my life. My tears seemed like they won’t stop. I was foolish, ignorant and naively believed all the devil’s whispers.
But now I’m no longer the same lady who will obediently walked to her own death. Instead, I was determined to change my future and not running away cowardly from my fate.
I clenched my grip tightly. Looking determined than ever. I swear on my honor, to everyone who made me like this, I’ll make sure they would rather die than live! I’ll make it happens! Thank you, O Merciful God for giving me a chance for taking revenge!
***
From the morning down to the afternoon, Yunifer and I played a lot. We talked about the wonderful childhood past we had and the memories we have made together.
It was such a joyful afternoon that I could not bring myself to part with her no matter what.
“Luna, look at this flower ring we made together!” Yunifer raised the small flower rings in the air and took them closer to me. “Pretty, right? I remember we plucked all the flowers in the garden until we were scolded by the gardeners? Ah… That was such a good time we had.”
“Yeah, it was. I really miss that moment.”
“Do you think we could do it again?” asked Yunifer, eyeing me hopefully.
I pinched her nose and said, “Sure, why not? The next time we do it, we must plucked all the flowers in the garden! “
Yunifer giggled. “If that’s so then let’s make it in your garden instead. Otherwise, my (petty, annoying) brother will angry at me if we do it in our duchy.” She pouted and crossed her arms angrily.
“Of course it is. Who wouldn’t? Flowers are planted to being admired, not to being plucked,” I said, teasing her.
“Hey! You should be on my side!” Yunifer protested.
“Ah.. And do you remember about the time we sneak outside?”
“Oooh yes… ” She squealed in excitement. “If my memory is correct, we were seven by then! It was funny when we were trying to act like an adult spending all our money in buying dolls and dresses! “
“And of course, our parents mad at us for did not notifying them.”
“I still remember their white face as though they just witnessed a ghost when they saw us again. I’m so jealous of your brother back then though, he was so worried about you. And what about me? That bastar- ehem … my older brother punched me instead. It was so hurt! “
I hastily turned my laugh unto a hacking cough when I saw Yunifer’s deadly offended look. I cleared my throat and raised my head, looked into Yunifer’s glistening golden eyes. “He was worried about you too. He just … did not want to admit it and show his concern in front of you.”
“Whatever. Let’s not talk about him anymore. We need to talk about us instead!”
“Yeah! Let’s forget about your brother,” I agreed.
The time flew that we did not pay attention of the hours that had passed. Almost the rest of the day we spent was talking about the things we made during our childhood. It was fun.
I glanced at Yunifer. She too was having fun, and I was glad she did not sad anymore.
I wish the time could stop so I could spend all the time being with her. Each second was precious to me that I don’t intend to let it go without making sweet memory with her.
