Curious to know what the crowd in the shop was staring at, I saw Yunifer edged her way inside and squeezed in amongst the excited ladies.
“It’s the 300 limited ice cream!” cried a woman who was wearing a blue pastel hat.
“Only a dozen left now!” screamed another.
“I want it!”
“Me first!” squeaked a little boy aged not more than eight years old who was swinging off his mother’s arm.
“Hey! Let go! My daughter wants it first!” snapped a woman impatiently, elbowing the mother and her kid out of the way.
When I turned my gaze away, an old, worn out brown book caught my interest. I picked it from the shelf and noticed the first thing I saw on the cover, “How Lady Millicent Tamed The Wild Beast” and below it, there was a letter being written on, “S. R.”.
Curious, I opened the first page. It was the story about a lady who has a love triangle between two men, known as the beast.
The lady, called Millicent who was described as innocent and pure, attracted the men who are called Jayren and Derrick. Jayren is a noble and holds the status of Marquis while Derrick is a commoner.
The story begins when Millicent saved a large, terrifying brown dog in the jungle when she was plucking the flowers. Many people were scared of it because it would bite anyone who dared to touch and disturbed him.
However, in contrast to what the people thought, the dog became smitten with Millicent.
Millicent did not know the dog was actually the Marquis who had a terrible reputation in her town and he also did not have any intention to tell her about his true identity.
So after several months, they gradually became closer … until Jayren, the Marquis, had the courage to tell her.
He explained he was being cursed by a dark witch and he needed something in order to break the curse. Millicent, who felt sympathy towards him, shed tears and kissed the dog’s forehead, and surprisingly, Jayren the Marquis turned into a human again!
Grateful and happy, he proposed to MIllicent because he had fallen in love with her during the time they had spent together. Millicent was about to accept the proposal when they were being interrupted by someone, it was Derrick!
He shouted to her that the Marquis was a monster and would eat her up when the night came. Millicent was taken aback, and before she could do anything, she was being taken away by Derrick to somewhere far away.
Millicent demanded an explanation from Derrick, his childhood friend and who worked as a hunter. He told her that he had surveyed them together for quite a long time and was suspicious of their relationship.
Derrick confessed he had seen Marquis Jayren murdered plenty of women before to drink their blood. It was said that by drinking their blood, he could achieve immortality.
On the other side, Jayren used his title to embark on a journey to rescue Millicent from Derrick. He deemed Derrick as a wanted criminal and ordered his knights to search for him everywhere.
After several weeks passed by, they finally captured Derrick and were about to kill him when they heard Millicent’s voice who asked them to stop.
“Don’t kill him!”
The knights were stunned, looking puzzled by the sudden outburst. The commander asked, “Why?”
Yunifer replied quietly and calmly, “I know you are here to save me. Let go of him and I will go with you.”
The knights however, disagreed as they were being ordered to kill him. Yunifer cried and desperately begged them not to kill Derrick.
Marquis Jayren suddenly came with a group of knights behind him. He went down his horse and reached his hands to Millicent.
“Pardon me for making you wait here, Milly, dear. Don’t be scared, your fiance has arrived.”
Millicent shook her head. “No, no … you are not my fiance. We are not engaged.”
Jayren frowned. “It’s alright. After we arrive safely in the capital, I will hold our wedding and ask the high priests to bless us with a marriage.”
Again, Millicent shook her head frantically. “I won’t marry you, Jay!” she yelled.
Taken aback, Jayren questioned, “Why not?”
“Because she was mine!” shouted a voice in the back.
Jayren wheeled around and saw Derrick lying on the ground, looking scarlet purple after having been completely beaten into a pulp.
Millicent sobbed when Derrick dragged his body and limped towards her direction. He held her into a deep embrace and broke it, glaring at Jayren.
“You are not taking her anyway without my permission!”
The knight commander took out his sword and beheaded him right in front of Millicent for his attitude towards his master.
It was later revealed that Millicent was pregnant with Derrick’s son during their stay in the cave. She told Marquis Jayren that she had completely fallen in love with Derrick as time passed by.
Feeling betrayed and furious, the Marquis drew his sword and pointed it on Millicent’s heart.
“Choose me or I will kill you!” he roared, trembling with rage.
“No! I will continue to love him no matter what even until death separates us!” cried Millicent and held Derrick’s motionless cold hands and brought them closer to her heart.
The Marquis was enraged and without sparing a moment to think, his sword pierced through Millicent’s heart. Her blood splattered everywhere. She died along with her unborn baby.
Jayren, who was shocked when he regained his senses seeing two dead bodies lying on the ground, became panicked. He was haunted with guilt and later decided to commit suicide.
That was the end of the story.
I slowly closed the book and rubbed my eyes. Blinking, I glanced over the clock. I was so immersed in the story that I did not notice the time passed by.
The sound of footsteps was heard speeding towards me interspersed with the sound of panting breaths. I lifted my head and noticed Richie.
His face was pale and gritted his lip. His facial expression showed he was in trouble and anxiously staring at me.
Richie spotted the book in my hands and nervously questioned, “T-that thing … in your hands … what is it …?”
“Oh, this! It’s a book, why?”
“No … I mean, I know what it is, but … where do you get it?”
His gaze followed my finger which pointed to the pink shelf. His face hardened.
“Lady, I’m sorry. But … that book is not supposed to be read …”
“Oh, really? I apologized, I don’t have any idea … ”
“Er – it’s okay, but … could you give me back?”
I frowned. “Why should I?”
“Er – t-that’s because … it’s my book …” Richie’s ears went pink.
I raised my eyebrows. “Really? It’s yours?”
“… Yeah.”
“Oh my god! Where did you buy this? I love this story so much!”
“Oh, no! I don’t buy it! It’s actually … my friend’s.”
“Your friend?”
“It’s like this lady, my friend owned this book and he lent it to me,” Richie explained.
“Then can you tell me where did she or he buy it?”
“My friend didn’t buy it. He was the one who … er – wrote this book.”
“!”
“Oh, dear! I … don’t have any idea he was the author! Then … Can I meet him in person?” My eyes were lighting up.
“…What?” Richie was astounded, his eyes widened in shock.
“I love the story so I wonder if I could meet him, as a fan!” I said eagerly.
“Er – that’s … a bit …” Richie hesitated.
“Hmm … What’s wrong?”
“Well, lady, I could tell him to meet you … but I’m not sure if he will, since he doesn’t like going out. I’m afraid he might offend you.”
“Oh, that’s okay! As a fan, I don’t want to burden my favourite author! I will try to understand him, though …” I said, sounding a bit disappointed and devastated.
Seeing my reaction, Richie waved his hands and hurriedly consoled me, “Don’t worry, lady! I will try my best to convince him! Although … please … don’t expect too much …”
The corner of my lips twitched and I revealed a smile.

Yunifer was standing underneath a lollipop sign hanging in the furthest corner of the shop. She was examining a tray of every lollipops flavoured. I sneaked up behind her and patted her shoulder a few times.
She was startled and nearly dropped the lollipops on her hands and quickly looked over her shoulder. Still a bit shocked, she whimpered, “Luna! You scared me!”
Grinning, I said, “Look at the time, we have been here at least a century already.”
“Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t notice the time!” Yunifer turned her head away and looked over an ancient clock in the store.
“Silly! Of course, you haven’t! You have been preoccupied with those sweets until now!”
Embarrassed, Yunifer grabbed my hands and we walked over to the counter. “Wait for me for a moment. I will join you later.”
Yunifer came back about ten minutes later with her maids, Illiya and Cindy (If I was not mistaken) carrying a handful of boxes on their arms, probably the take-away cakes she had just ordered at the last minute.
When Yunifer and I had paid for all of our sweets, we left the Tartaria bakery.
Yunifer heaved a sigh. “I really want to buy those ice creams though, but my brother won’t allow it. He said they would melt down before they reached home.”
“Which was true,” I admitted, muttering slowly.
Yunifer had bought all the ice cream in my past life before and as a result they melted down in the carriage. The seats were sticky and were covered by ants. I still remembered she was being scolded and punished by her older brother.
He forbade her to shop for desserts at Tartaria Bakery for three months, much to Yunifer’s displeasure and annoyance. She begged him and asked for mercy as though the punishment was too harsh and untolerable.
“What do you say?” She asked sharply.
“Er – nothing,” I said quickly, trying to look innocent.
“Next time … I would definitely be the first one to arrive in the store and buy all the ice cream!” Yunifer looked really determined as she pumped her fists in the air.
Sure, good luck with that. Pursing my lips, I tried not to laugh.
