“I won’t do what you tell me to do anymore.”
The room’s temperature changed rapidly in a blink of an eye and it turned icy and cold just like it was in the north, where it has a never-ending snow.
Aunt Chermaine and Quentin’s body stiffened. Their eyes bulged in disbelief and their jaws dropped, leaving them hanging open, loss for words.
The smile that lit upon Aunt Chermaine just now faded and her face twisted, hardening.
I could not tell if it was anger or shame, or even both. But I could say I was rather enjoying her facial expressions.
I let out a giggle, covered my mouth with a palm.
“What do you say?” barked Quentin. He rose from his seat at once and pushed away his chair roughly.
The chair tumbled backwards and in the next moment, it fell onto the marble floor, creating a loud noise and it echoed throughout the silent room.
Clang!
His footsteps fastened towards me and came into a halt as soon as our eyes met. Finally, his large purple face stopped in front of me.
He was fuming in rage and for a moment, I thought he wanted to beat the shit out of me.
But I did not falter, not a bit. Since I had already prepared myself for the worst outcome, I showed nothing, not even fear towards them.
I stared back at him with my cold blue eyes.
I had too much experience of their treatment in the past that it felt like it just happened yesterday.
Aunt Chermaine was a widower who married my father’s cousin, my Uncle Iventis. Their personalities were complete opposites that I wondered how they could be wed off.
While Uncle Iventis was down-to-earth, humble, loving and a kind man, his wife, Aunt Chermaine was different.
In fact, she is a conceited, egoistical and a prideful woman. She loves to decorate herself by wearing expensive and priceless accessories and dresses.
She could not bear to see if other ladies wear much prettier dresses than her and would always want to be the centre of attention.
Furthermore, she would not hesitate to cut ties with the other people if she deemed they are useless and not worth her precious time.
However, as prideful as she is, she would not mind bowing down her head sometimes and curry-favours to the powerful people that would help her rise in the society.
Oh, I forgot about one thing. She is a greedy person too as her eyes would brighten up as she looks at jewelleries or money.
I just continued to stare at Quentin with a calm smile lit on my face as I ignored his glares.
It seems that Quentin got his mother’s genes, although he looked alike like Uncle Iventis, his father.
Quentin is a large, fatty man and somehow had reached roughly the size and weight of a young killer whale. He was shorter than my big brother who’s height was around 6 feets.
Quentin spoke in a trembling voice, “If you’ve got the guts, I want you to repeat those words in front of me, NOW!”
“I hate repeating my words for the second time,” I said coldly. “It’s your fault for not concentrating.”
“That’s enough, Quentin, dear.”
“Mom!” Quentin protested, his large head turned to the other side, glancing at his mother.
“Now, now, Quentin,” said Aunt Chermaine, calming down her son as she waved down her hands.
“Your sweet cousin,” She took a step forward and smiled forcely. “Is really good at telling jokes. Surely you don’t mean that way, do you?”
“Wow, I wonder if you’re deaf, aunt,” I said, my eyebrows went up in surprise. “Didn’t you hear me clearly?”
“Don’t you take that tone — “ began Quentin in a shrill voice, but her mother waved him down and he went quiet, although not that quiet as he let out an impatient noise.
“Well, well, I’m sure Lunaria dislikes our visit tonight, Quentin. It seems we’re disturbing her sleep. It’s natural, dear, it’s natural,” said Aunt Chermaine, rubbing her chest. “It must have been a surprise for you, Lunaria.”
“Not at all. I figured out you will come here to ask for more money sooner or later,” I replied casually, shrugging. “I’ve been expecting you two.”
Aunt Chermaine laughed awkwardly and she extended her hands in a warm welcome.
She later pointed her finger to the empty seat which was in front of them.
“Why don’t you sit down here? We could discuss further things, of course.“
She nodded.
“You don’t have to offer me a seat. This is my house. I can sit wherever I want.”
Aunt Chermaine blushed in embarrassment. She fanned herself with her hands and retracted her gaze from me.
“Mother was just being kind,” said Quentin sharply, throwing me a nasty look. “You’ve been being disrespectful and rude to us since the beginning. Don’t be childish and learn some manners, won’t you?”
“I don’t know who is the one who’s being disrespectful and rude here, considering there are a pair of a shameless mother and a bastard son who just barge in into my house in the midnight and brazenly ask for money like filthy beggars on the street,” I sneered and walked over to the seat and sat, crossing my arms and legs.
Aunt Chermaine and Quentin went pink.
Quentin began, “Y-you … how dare you — ”
“Lunaria, I suppose you know that you couldn’t talk back to the elderly, right?” warned Aunt Chermaine, her voice quivering in anger and her face turned scarlet. “You must know I’m three decades older than you!”
“Of course, I know. I’m not an idiot like you who couldn’t count how much money you’ve borrowed before without paying it back,” I replied, rolling my eyes irritably.
“Careful with your words!” she shrieked and seemed like she had lost her cool. “You need to respect me since I’m older than you! Who teaches you to speak that way? Haven’t your father taught you some manners?”
“Aunt, you could insult me whatever you want, but don’t you dare speak about my father!” I cried and rose from my seat at once.
“Y-you … !! You dare to — “
“As a matter of fact, yes! I dare to!” I snarled at her and did not give her a chance to complete her sentence. “How could I behave so politely towards the people who would hit me if I don’t give them some money!”
I bit my lips, that was true. In the past, Aunt Chermaine and my aggressive cousin Quentin would beat me up into a pulp everytime they were at my house.
If I don’t give them anything they want, then they would start to yank me by my hair and whip me with wood or anything sharp.
My family did not have the slightest idea about their treatment towards me because I would silence myself from blurting out the truth for fear that they would beat me again.
They probably did not know that I was being tortured at home while they were doing their work.
Hearing my words, my aunt looked like she was about to pass out due to explosive anger she could not control anymore.
Quickly, Quentin too rose up from his seat and supported his mother.
He placed his big fat arms around her, muttering a few supportive words, although I knew that would not work.
Then, he shifted his gaze to me.
“You are too much!” he growled. “We came here with great difficulty to ask you to lend us some money kindly, but this is how you treat us!”
“Kindly, you say?” I laughed darkly and shook my head, thinking it was ridiculous.
“If it is in my dictionary, I supposed that I should kick you two for dirtying my couch with your piggy butts! And what with great difficulty? I too think it is hard for me to take out my money for you!”
Quentin bellowed, “Lunaria, you’re truly heartless!”
“So what if I am heartless? Aren’t you guys the same too? You guys heartlessly beat the shit out of me with no tears at all! Animals!”
” — Don’t you know that my mother suffered an incurable illness?! That’s why we’re here to — ”
“Oh, in fact, I know, Quentin. I think she deserves it!” I hissed, interrupting him again. “But I don’t want to know and I don’t care in the slightest bit about her health!”
“I could not believe you speak to me in that way!” yelled Quentin, his temper rising up. The veins in his forehead started to be visible.
Aunt Chermaine finally could pull herself together as she took a deep breath. Still panting, she raised her right hand as a sign to silence down Quentin.
Quentin abruptly closed his mouth at once, giving a space for her beloved mother to speak.
She cleared her throat. “A-anyway, you must give us the money if you want to live,” threatened Aunt Chermaine, even though I could see she was trembling, with her left hand clenching her fan tightly.
“Oh, wow!” I raised my eyebrows, pretending to be surprised and yelled, “How bold of you!”
“Dear aunt, I don’t have any idea you could be this stupid,” I said with a sigh, shaking my head in disbelief.
“For someone who’s already old, don’t you fear you would be thrown to the prison if you dare to inflict any harm on me? You seem to have forgotten, that this is my house. Everything that happens here is according to my will.”
“However, you must know … what I would do if you don’t give in,” warned Aunt Chermaine, clutching her dress and her voice quivered.
I kicked my tongue irritably, thinking what should I do next, and suddenly an idea came to my mind.
I smirked at the evil thought.
“If there’s anything you want,” I bellowed.
“Kneel! And beg for it!”
My lips curled in a satisfying way.
