I arrived at exactly 5 a.m. in front of Naoyuki’s door. It makes me feel awkward to just enter in his place after what I did yesterday and so I decided to wait for him to open the door and let me in.I press the doorbell twice after staring at it for 5 minutes but there is no response. I waited again for a few minutes after ringing the doorbell for a few more times. I try to call his phone but it is turned off and it makes me more worried for him.
I decided to finally enter on my own and the moment I stepped in, all I can see is chaos.
The stench smell of alcohol lingers everywhere because of a bottle of rum that spilled on the floor with a lot of papers scattered, some were torn and some were already soaked wet.
When I walk further in into the kitchen, everything is messier. There are used plates messily stacked on the counter and some broken glasses on the floor. Then I heard the water running in the bathroom and I thought that Naoyuki-san is in there but when I checked it, it is empty but the shower is still on and the water on the tub is overflowing. What the heck happened here last night?
I walk straight to the bedroom to check if he is alright but I saw him lying on the floor.
“Naoyuki-san!!!” I shout as I noticed that there are red stains on his clothes.
“Naoyuki-san, please hang in there! I will call an ambulance!” I scooped him up from the floor while trying to wake him up.
“hmmmm…what is it?” He slowly opened his eyes.
“Naoyuki-san are you alright? What happened here?”
As I take a closer look, I noticed that it was not blood stains and instead, it was red wine and some ketchup stains all over his white shirt.
He looked at me with a confused eyes and then he speaks softly, “I think I’m gonna throw up. Ugh…” He clinged tightly to my shoulders and then starts to throw up right into my shirt.
“Ahhhh! Yuki! Hold up, let me carry you to the bathroom.” I wanted to back away from him but I’m afraid that he’ll fall down badly in the floor so I endure it and slowly walk into the bathroom to help him clean up. After throwing up almost everything, he collapsed again and so I carried him back to his bed.
I take off my clothes and tossed it in the washer immediately before I took a shower.
Luckily, I have left my clothes here from one of my visits so I have something else to wear while waiting for my clothes to dry off.
I started cleaning the kitchen by throwing the broken shards of glasses on the floor and wash all the pilled up plates. Cleaning the kitchen is much easier compared to the living room where I have to carefully gather all the torn and damaged papers scattered before wiping of the liquor spilled down the floor and the sofa.
While picking up the papers, I noticed one of the papers not torn but was soaked from the rum. This paper, I think I have seen the logo printed above before….
Wait are these papers are all hospital documents?! I check out the remaining intact papers and I am starting to assume that these are test results of a patient.
I tried to find the name of the patient in the documents but I can’t find it. I take a glimpse from some of the readable pages and saw an unfamiliar words.
Dilated cardiomyopathy
I take out my phone to search for the meaning of it when someone suddenly speaks from behind me.
“You don’t have to clean up after my mess.”
I turned and saw Naoyuki standing behind me. He walked towards me and snatched away the papers from my hands and then throw it all in the trash can.
“I’m sorry for barging in without asking you first.” I stand up immediately.
“No, it’s ok. You don’t have to apologize to me. I’m the one who should apologize to you. I’m sorr-“
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry for causing a scene yesterday! I didn’t mean to act so jealous without even listening to your side.” I cut him off before he can apologize because I am the one who should really say sorry. I kneeled and bowed formally in front of him.
“No it’s ok. I’m sorry too, if only I didn’t keep secrets with you and act so suspicious, maybe you will not misunderstand.” He kneels in front of me and hugged me tightly and somehow, I felt his tears falling down my shoulder.
“Sorry if I make you feel worry the whole night.” I hugged him tighter and wipe down his tears as he cried like a kid.
Somehow it always make me feel refreshed seeing him act like a child sometimes.
I prepared our food as he take a shower and then we eat our breakfast together.
“About the papers you throw out, aren’t you going to have trouble losing such important documents?” he stopped eating as soon as I asked that question.
“That was just a spare copy and it was an old document so I don’t need it anymore.”
But if I remember correctly, the date on the document was the the date yesterday, March 16 and I am sure that it was an official document but I am afraid that asking further will only make the atmosphere awkward so I didn’t ask anymore.
We made up and ended our first misunderstanding peacefully. I left his place and go to my work but something keeps bothering my mind…
Those words I saw in the document. I pull out my phone and started searching..
Dilated cardiomyopathy
A rare type of a heart condition. As I read further, I feel a little uneasy learning the seriousness of the content of that file. Is that another reason why he made a ruckus in his place? Is it about that patient he said that he will meet, or something more close like someone from his family?
I feel guilty for being an additional burden to him. I should be the one supporting him by being with him but I ended up being an addition to his stress and pushed him to the limit to drink until he get wasted and cause a ruckus in his own house.
After I finished my work shift, I decided to visit Naoyuki back to check if he is really doing fine after I left him and not drinking again.
