Arakata Hisashi’s POV
The start of my spring was not good especially for my heart and now that the month of April has finally come where the peak of blooming of the cherry blossoms happen, another school year starts.
I forgot to set up an alarm for today and so I am driving a little bit faster so I won’t be late for the entrance ceremony of the students. As I drive closer, I noticed a boy who is not wearing the school uniform heading towards the gate. He looks like in a hurry and so I assume that he is one of the new students for the school year
My car passed by him as I continue to drive towards the school when I see him stumbling down the ground from my rear view mirror. I stop driving forward and starts to move backward to take a closer look. I stepped down my car and eventually help him up.
“Hey kid, are you not feeling alright? Are you a new student of Kogarashi High?”
“Why would I need to answer you? Just mind your own business.” I didn’t expect that this kid is acting so rude to a stranger who just wants to help him. Now I have another kid to add in my list of ‘Annoying Brats That will Ruin my day.’
“Look, I’m not trying to interfere in your business or something but please, if you’re not feeling well right now, you should just go home and skip the first day.”
“And who do you think you are to make decisions for me?”
“I’m a teaching there and possibly you will be one of my students so just listen to me.” I tried to keep my calm and continues to approach him gently.
“You -you -you are my teacher?” It seems that he becomes a little ashamed of acting rude just a few moments ago.
“Yes so please listen to me. I can drive you back to your home or…” He suddenly collapsed while he still holding his arms. “Hey! You should at least let me finish talking before collapsing like that.” I shake his shoulders but he is really unconscious and he is having a high fever.
I carried him in the car and decided to bring him to the school clinic instead of driving him to his house because I don’t even know where this kid lives and I’m still running late for my work.
Luckily, I found two students who are serving as our school nurse assistants walking in the school parking lot. I called for help and asked them to bring that kid to the clinic and so they immediately carried the boy out my car voluntarily.
When I grab my things on the back seat of the car, I saw a student card lying on the floor. I picked it up and saw that it belongs to that kid.
Odagiri Miyoshi
3rd Year
I shoved the card in my pocket and continued to walk towards the school building. Maybe I can just return the card to him later when I pass by to the clinic after my classes.
When lunch break arrived, I happily walked back to my office desk to eat the lunch I brought. Everything is going well for my first day in class, no problematic children to look after for in my homeroom and it seems that the students all like me to be their teacher because of the recent award and the rumor of me being a cool teacher spread and so I guess this year will be fun and peaceful.
“You seems to be in a good mood today Arakata-sensei.” Sakaguchi-san is already starting to eat her lunch next to me.
“Yes, it seems that I’m lucky in my students this school year.”
“Really? I wish I am just as lucky as you are.” She is starting to get gloomy again.
“Why? Did something happened?”
“Actually one of my students is a transferee and is one of the five students who were already absent for my class and when I checked their names, it appears that he was always involved in street fights during his time in Junior high.” She looked at me teary eyes and continues “Just imagining that I will have to handle an actual deliquent gives me a headache. “
“Don’t worry, just call me from the classroom next to yours and I’ll teach that punk a lesson.”
“Hahaha, you’re reliable as always Arakata-sensei.”
We continuously talk until she finally feel better. I left the office to get some fresh air before the afternoon classes begin when I suddenly remember to return the ID card of that kid that is still in my pocket. I take a detour towards the school clinic and when I am just one floor away, I saw the school nurse passing by and so I just asked him to give back the card to that kid so I don’t have to deal with it any longer.
I walked back to my original destination, the rooftop. I opened the pocket book I recently bought and started reading while feeling the cool breeze of spring. This place is still the best to have a quiet time for myself.
This reminds me of the time when we were in senior highschool, that time after the tragedy when we transferred to a school away from our home town. Nao was still in trauma that time and was too afraid to even make a little interaction with any of our new classmates except me so whenever it was time for lunch break, I will drag him out of the classroom and bring him in the school rooftop to eat together. That will be the only time he will speak again when I started a conversation and slowly, he started to talk more and smile a little whenever I tried to share the stories I wanted to write in the future.
I made a promise to him that time that someday, I will make a masterpiece out of a story that will move peoples heart and will free him from all his sadness and trauma.
I made that promise but I am still not sure of what to do and besides, I rejected a job offer from a publishing company to be an editor and writer because I am afraid that I will make a failure.
I am afraid that once I am already in the line of work I dreamed of, I may realize how much I can’t fit into it. What if I find out that I really have no talent for it? I’m sure it will just ruin my life and so I decided to take my time.
I closed the pocket book I am reading because I can no longer concentrate on it because of my train of thoughts and so I decided to just head back to the office to prepare for the afternoon classes.
