Arakata Hisashi’s POV
After Kazuya suddenly appeared and drag Nao away from the cafe, I was left dumbfounded on my seat while still replaying our conversation in my mind.
“I am going to die before the snow stops to fall.” He said to me with a very serious face and upon hearing those words, my spine felt chill as if I was hit by a bucket of ice.
“Yuki is this something to do with the things I heard back in the hospital?” I tried to maintain my composure and asked everything that is lingering in my mind.
“Before I tell you everything, please promise me that you will never say it to anyone even after I die.” His eyes look deeply into mine as he grabbed my hands with his own trembling hands.
I took a deep breath to calm myself before making a promise with him. “Yes, I promise.”
“What you’ve heard back then is not about me. To make things clear, I do not have any kind of fatal health condition and I am not the one who will need an operation so stop over thinking about it.”
“Then who is it? Why does it feel like it has something to do with you?”
“It is Koharu.” He answered in a very straight forward manner without giving me time to prepare.
“What?!” My jaw dropped open after hearing his short answer.
“This is just between my family and Shinjiro so I have been keeping this matter private but after you have heard that conversation, I decided to disclose it with you and settle our misunderstanding back then.”
“’Then are you telling me that your brother is in a serious condition right now?”
“Well he is doing fine for now but his disease is quite dangerous if we do not make our move to treat is as soon as possible.”
“Then will you be part of the team that will do the operation of your brother? It appears that you have a great involvement with his case so I am assuming that you are part of the team.”
“No, it is not my expertise when it comes to cardiology. I am just trying my best to coordinate with Shinjiro about my brother’s condition.”
“I see.”
“….”
After the topic of our conversation ended, we are back to the more sensitive topic where we both started.
“So now that our misunderstandings are solved, please tell me the truth. How could you say that you will die before the snow stops to fall?” I asked with full conviction that took up all my courage.
“My probabilities have been showing this for a long time. I tried everything to solve this on my own but I still end up not being able to change anything. The only thing I can do now is accept it and die without regret.” My heart ached painfully after hearing him say it with a very calm voice while trying to fake a smile.
“Nao, no I can’t accept this. There is still a chance right?” I can hear my own voice trembling.
“No, I am already at the dead end.”
“But those probabilities you are seeing for a long time, it can be change right? Probabilities aren’t constant and can still be affected by whatever we do right?” This was the first time I found myself acting so desperate and scared for a very long time.
“No, this time it is different. Whatever I do, the only thing that changes is the rising probabilities for each day that passes.”
“But why?! Why are you acting so calm right now, why are you acting as if you already accepted your fate? Nao please don’t give up!” The tears I have badly holding out finally pour down with all my emotions that I tried to swallow down.
“I have no choice. This is the only thing I can do, to accept it and at least let someone survive. This is the best for all of us.”
“Best for us? Do you even know how we will feel if you die? Do you even imagine how painful it will be for us to just accept that? How about Kazuya? Did you even take that kid as a consideration when you give up all hope? Nao please stop acting so selfish!” I stop caring about our surroundings and didn’t even hold back my voice as lost all my reasons.
Silence wrapped the space between us and I did not care anymore about what will happen next but suddenly, someone slammed our table.
“Yuki, what is happening right now? What do you mean die? Please tell me that this is all a joke.” My vision was blurred with all the tears uncontrollably pouring out but I managed to make out who was the person who came.
And that is how I ended up sitting here all alone after the fuzz.
“Sir? Are you alright?” a familiar voice cautiously approached me and put a handkerchief in my hands.
I wiped my tears with the handkerchief before letting my head up to face the kid who is trying to console me.
“T–tthank you Miyoshi-kun-” My voice was still trembling and so I decided to stop talking and remain silent for a while.
“I’m sorry if I may sound a little out of line but if you need someone to comfort you, I am willing to stay here and listen.”
The atmosphere between us feels the same as the time when I tried to comfort this kid but how come that our roles are reversed right now? Why do I feel a sense of assurance and warmth from an innocent boy in front of me?
“Please stay by my side for a while if you don’t mind.” I grab his hand before he change his mind and retreat.
“I don’t mind, as long as it will make you feel better.” He smiled at me full of sincerity without a trace of faking it.
“…”
“…”
My mind eventually goes back into thinking about depressing things as silence creep around me.
“Arakata-sensei, I’m sorry for asking a sensitive question but I cannot stop myself asking, is your friend really going to die?” tears automatically flow down after hearing the word ‘die’ from his mouth. “Oh, I’m very sorry! I didn’t mean to make you go through the shock again. Please forget my question.” He panics when he sees me crying again.
“Yes… you are right. My friend…the most important person in my life is saying that he will die and asking me to accept it and be prepared when that day come.” I wipe the tears again before continuing. “How can I even accept that? You also know the pain of losing a friend right Miyoshi-kun?”
“Yes, I understand what you are trying to say more than anyone here. The pain of regret and helplessness of not being able to help a friend and the sense of loss and emptiness after seeing the aftermath, I can clearly remember those pains whenever I think of my friend.” He looked down with his fist clenched tightly.
“….” It was not my intention to open an old wound from Miyoshi-kun’s memories and it was an insensitive move on my part to mention his past. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-“
“It’s fine. This topic may be a little sensitive between us but I assure you that it will be fine with me. You don’t have to hold back. I am here to listen and support you.” His expression changes in a blink of an eye
“Thank you, I-”
“Miyoshi-kun can we talk here for a minute?” I was cut off when the manager of the cafe called out from a distance.
“Yes!” Miyoshi was a little embarassed to be called in front of me and so he immediately stand up from his seat. “Uhhm sensei, I’m sorry for leaving you but I have to go back to my job for a while.”
“It’s alright, it was my fault for keeping you here during your work time.”
“But I am the one who insist to stay so it was not your fault. Sensei, if you don’t mind, can I have your contact information?” his face is turning red just by asking for my number and I find it kind of cute.
“Here.” I pulled out a calling card from my wallet and give it to his shaking hands. “But promise me that you will not let anyone know that you have it okay?”
“Yes, I promise!” he bowed down before running towards the cafe manager who is just watching us from the distance.
After a while, I managed to calm myself down and decided to leave the cafe. I wanted to let Miyoshi-kun see me leaving but unfortunately, I heard that he is asked to organize their storage so he will not be out in the cafe to serve the customers.
I fell asleep as soon as I go back to my house maybe because I was emotionally exhausted first thing in the morning. When I open my eyes again, it is already sun down. I really sleep the entire day without even realizing.
*ring**ring*
An unknown number is calling me.
“Hello? Who are you?” I answered without thinking twice.
“…”
“Hello?” I asked again when nobody speaks.
“—it it’s me sensei. I’m Odagiri Miyoshi.” He finally speaks in an awkward tone.
“Oh, I didn’t expect to receive a call from you.”
“I just got off from work and I— I just want to check if you are okay.”
“You don’t have to worry about me so much. Actually I just woke up after sleeping the whole time after I left the cafe so I feel a little refresh right now.”
“I am glad to hear that. By the way, do you want to come to an amusement park with me next week?”
“What?”
“Amusement park. Next week. Do you want to come?” He just repeats everything in a jumbled way.
“Yes, I heard that clearly but why all of a sudden?”
“Well, Mizuki-san, I mean our cafe manager gave me two tickets to an amusement park as a reward.”
“But why me? You can just go with someone else without asking me.”
“Because you are the first person that comes into my mind when I got the tickets, and besides, I don’t have any friends from school and all my co-workers from the cafe are not interested in going out during weekends.”
“Why does it sounds like I have no choice? Hahaha”
“Oh I didn’t mean to sound so desperate but sensei please, I want to hear your answer.”
“Okay, fine. I will go with you but don’t expect me to go along with all the rides there.”
“Yes, I understand. I will not force you to ride anything.”
“And one more thing, study hard for the upcoming exam.”
“Yes, I promise!” he answered all fired up.
“Good, you should start studying now so I will be ending the call now. Bye.”
“Bye sensei. I am looking forward next weekend.”
I sit up from the sofa where I laid down and started questioning myself while staring at the screen of my phone.
When did I become someone who gets easily persuaded? And more importantly, an amusement park? Really? I am getting too much out of my character whenever I am dealing with that kid.
The following week, students take their examination before the summer vacation come to date. It is expected to see how the students are all eager to finish their exams and go home and take the vacation.
After spending the whole week dealing with the examinations and its results, weekend finally arrived without any warning.
*ring**ring*
I was awaken by my phone ringing nonstop so early in the morning and when I open my eyes a little to see who is calling, it was Miyoshi-kun.
“Hey, why are you calling me so early? I thought that we are meeting at 1 p.m.?”
“I just want to make sure that you do not forget and check if you are already awake.”
“But it is early. I want to sleep more.”
“See, just like how I imagined. You are still asleep before I called you. Do you know what time is it sensei?” he sounded just like my mom when she is nagging me.
“Wait let me take a look first.” I looked at my phone and slowly opened my eyes to see the time.
“Sensei, it is already 12:30 p.m.”
“No, it is 12:28 p.m.”
“Well that is not my point here. You might be still sleeping at 1 p.m. if I did not wake you up with a call. Jeez you really like to sleep aren’t you sensei.”
“And you really like to nag me like my mom. I will be ready in a few minutes so stop nagging.”
“I’m not nagging. Just make sure to arrive at the entrance gate at exactly 1 p.m.”
“Okay mom. Bye mom.”
“Hey I told I am not-“I hang up before the kiddo can even complain.
The amusement park is just located nearby so it did not take much of my time driving towards it. I parked my near the entrance gate and I already spotted Miyoshi-kun standing in front of the gate looking at his wrist watch so intently while waiting for me. He is really taking our meeting time so seriously.
I sneaked in behind him without making any noise and peak at the time with his watch.
12:59 p.m.
1:00 p.m.
“I’m here mom- oh I mean Miyoshi-kun.” I speak behind me and he almost jumped out when he heard my voice.
“Sensei, you are really mean.”
“Why? I did not do anything wrong? I arrived at exactly 1 p.m. just like what I said.” I try to sound serious even though I am basically making fun of him.
“But why are you calling mom since earlier? Please stop calling me that, it is kind of embarrassing.”
“Then how about I call you dad?”
“Hey! Stop teasing me sensei.” His face is now all red.
“I am very sorry, I will not do it again dad- oops I mean mom, oh no Miyoshi-kun.”
“Jeez, you are really acting strange now. Well nevermind, we should get going now and have fun.”
“”Okay, let’s go in.”
And side by side, we walk in to the amusement park with the purpose of forgetting all our problems and worries in life.
