Arakata Hisashi’s POV
“Sensei! I love you!” Miyoshi-kun’s voice echoed in my ears as I wake up from a long dream.
What a very strange dream to start the week. I stand up and prepare to go back to school after the short—lived summer vacation. I went to class as usual and welcomed back all the students and ask to pass all the assignments I gave them during the vacation.
During lunch break, I walk up to the school rooftop and sit on my favorite spot that I missed throughout the whole summer and eat the bento I bought from the convenience store on my way earlier.
I watch as the autumn leaves fall to ground and slowly turned the whole campus color red from all the leaves that fell. The air is also starting to turn cold and it is just a matter of time before the seasons change again and turn into a cruel cold winter.
*sigh*
I finished the bento and stand up and leaned towards the railings as I unconsciously light up a cigarette.
“Sensei-“ I almost burned my fingers when I hear the same voice I heard from my dream earlier.
Miyoshi-kun slowly approached me from behind and for the first time after not being able to see him after we went to the amusement park; I felt a strange sensation just by looking at him.
Maybe it was that dream’s fault for making me feel weird because as I look at Miyoshi-kun’s face, I can’t help but remember his voice from my dream.
“Sensei, did you uhm- have you eaten lunch already? I brought some cakes from the cafe.” Today is really a weird day because it looks like I am not the only one acting strange here.
Miyoshi-kun is blushing so hard that he can pass as a ripe tomato while stuttering with his words. On the other hand, I am trying to keep myself in check trying to act calm and collected as usual.
“What’s wrong Miyoshi-kun? Are you having a fever? Your face looks so red right now.”
“Ah no, no I am fine, just summer heat.”
Summer heat? Seriously with this cold breeze of autumn air blowing, you are saying that you are feeling hot?
“Oh I see.” That’s the only thing I manage to say because I am afraid to make him more flustered if I meddled to much in what he is feeling right now.
“Here, you can take this cakes and maybe share it the other teachers. Bye.” He suddenly shoved the bag full of cakes in my arms and run away while trying not to stumble down the floor.
I stared down the content of the bag he left me and found a small piece of paper with a note from him.
‘Thank you again for everything that happened last time.’ -Miyoshi
Damn it. It is just a short note but why do I feel so happy about receiving this from him?
Still flustered, I walk back to the office and carefully putting the bag of cake slices on my desk.
“Wow, are those cakes from the cafe at the 3rd street?” Sakaguchi-san said when she take a peek of what’s inside the bag.
“Ah, yes you are right.”
“I never thought that you are the type of guy who is fond of sweet things.”
“Well, actually I-“ I wanted to deny the fact that I generally like sweet things but she cut me off.
“Oh don’t tell me you actually bought it for your girlfriend?”
“Hey, what brings you to that idea that I have a girlfriend? Your train of thought is ridiculous.”
“Hahaha, I am just trying to tease you and besides it really looks cute to see such a serious looking man looking so in love while staring at a bag full of cute slices of cakes.”
“No I’m not. I am not cute and I am not in love.” I can feel the back of my ears heating up just by hearing her teasing me about being in love.
“Are you sure? You are turning red as the autumn leaves right now, hahaha.”
“Let’s pretend that this silly conversation didn’t happen. I will be going now for my afternoon class.”
“Are you sure to leave your precious cakes here exposed in your desk like this?” she is poking the top of the bag teasingly.
“Hey stop that. I will just leave it there and whatever happens to it, you will be my first suspect so watch it for me.”
“Hahaha yes sir. But wait, before that can I ask you a favor later?”
“Yes, sure just tell me later. I am seriously running late for my next class. See you later.”
I never thought that the Sakaguchi-san who is always stressed out every day will one day have enough energy to tease me like that. The world is definitely in the middle of its changing phase.
After all my afternoon class, I went back to the office and it is a perfect timing because Sakaguchi-san also just got back from her last class.
“Arakata-san, about the favor I wanted to ask earlier, can you help me tomorrow regarding career counselling of my students?”
“Sure, I am already done with my class so I can spare some time to handle some of your students.”
“You are such a good help. Thank you so much!”
“No problem. Can I have the career form of some of your students so that I can prepare for tomorrow?”
“Here.” Without hesitation, she handed me 15 forms of her students and it feels like she already picked it up beforehand.
I looked at the students name written in the forms until I saw Miyoshi-kun’s career form.
“Hey, why are all these forms from your male students? Are you still afraid of dealing with them?”
“No, it’s not about that. I just feel like they will take it more seriously if the advice will come from you.”
“It doesn’t matter where the advice will come from; what’s more important is how they will make a realization for themselves. Well nevermind, just leave these brats to me and focus on the rest of your students.” I tap her shoulders to reassure her more.
“Thank you so much.” She smiled at me and somehow, I end up imagining Miyoshi-kun smiling in front of me.
“Arakata-san, what’s wrong?” I think I stared for too long and it is kind of embarrassing.
“Ah sorry, I am just thinking of something. I will be going home now. See you tomorrow.” I shoved the career forms inside my bag and awkwardly walk towards the school parking lot.
*sigh* I really need to clear my mind before I start acting weird around everyone.
That night, I scanned through the career forms of Sakaguchi-san’s homeroom students. Majority of them plans to attend local universities while the rest of them are planning to help their family in their business. The only problematic one among them all is Miyoshi-kun who all the questions unanswered. It is as if he has no plan with his life after graduation. He really needs to settle all his issues before ending up into a new trouble. I put his form to the very last place to have more time talking to him tomorrow.
The next day, Sakaguchi-san and I started counselling the students one by one during her homeroom time on the first period. She talks to her students inside the classroom while those students assigned to me are required to go to our office to talk to me privately. It caused a little nervousness to the students thinking that something unpleasant is up for those who are asked to go directly to me.
“Sensei, is there any reason why you are the one counselling me instead of Sakaguchi sensei?” this question keeps getting repeated every time a new brat walks in to the office.
“Nope, I am just helping out your homeroom teacher so relax.” My response is becoming more of a scripted answer as I repeat it multiple times with my involuntary smile.
There are no major issues regarding the students’ choice for their career and so it only took me the whole hour to finish talking with everyone except for Miyoshi-kun.
“Arakata-san, I’m very sorry for assigning too many students to you, I didn’t mean to take away all your time.” Sakaguchi-san immediately apologized when she saw that I still have one student to talk to during lunch break.
“It’s okay. It is just that the brats took so much time walking from their classroom towards our office, and besides Miyoshi-kun is the only one left for me to talk to compared to you who still have four students to talk to during lunch breaks.”
“I’m really thankful to have a colleague like you. I promise to treat you some good food next time.”
“Okay, I will be looking forward to that.”
“Sensei, I’m here for the counselling.” Miyoshi-kun came in the office during lunch break.
“Have you eaten your lunch before going here?”
“No, I am planning to just buy some bread after this.”
“I see. Then I think I have to finish this quickly. Come here and sit.” I pointed at Sakaguchi-san’s empty seat beside me.
He slowly sit down to the chair that is not facing me as if trying to avoid my face and so I lose a little of my patience letting myself to pull his chair closer while turning it towards me.
“Let me ask this straight to you. Miyoshi-kun please answer my questions honestly.”
“Y—es!” his face turns red just by answering it.
“First, what do you want to do after graduation?”
His expression shift so fast from being flustered to being irritated and gloomy.
“I actually—I actually don’t know.”
“Does your family have any business?”
“No, we don’t.”
“Then how about college? Are you having financial problems?”
“No. I have sufficient support from my grandpa.”
“Then why don’t you just give it a try and enter a University?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know? It is your life so why the hell you saying that you don’t know?”
“I never even thought that I will get through this far so I have no idea.”
“Seriously? Are you dumb? Ah shit, you are making my head ache.” I feel so irritated to the point that I wanted to take a smoke for a while. “Come with me, we have to talk more seriously.” I stand up and brought his empty career form and a pen before walking towards the school rooftop.
“Here. I am giving you five minutes to fill out everything there.” I throw the pen and paper to his face as soon as he steps in the rooftop.
I take a few steps away from him before lighting up a cigarette. I have no plan to talk to him until he is done but I can strongly feel his glances towards me.
“What do you want?” I asked him after actually catching him staring at me.
“Sensei, why do you choose to become a teacher?”
“It was never my intention to be a teacher from the very start, maybe it was just the fate that brought me here.”
“Then do you think, someday the fate will bring me towards the thing I am destined to do?”
“Yes, it may happen one day but before that, you have to do something to let the fate pull you through easily towards it.”
“What do you mean?”
“You have to work hard and keep moving forward until you realize what you really want.”
“I see. I think I know now what I wanted to do after graduation.”
“Really? That was fast coming from a brat like you.”
“I want to be a great teacher like you.” I was too distracted with his bright smiles so it took me a little time to realize what he have said.
“What?! Are you serious about that?”
“Yes! I want to be a cool teacher who will inspire, protect and teach students just like you.”
“Hahaha I don’t know if I should be proud of everything you have said but I think you have point. I am happy that you finally got something on your mind after graduation, I will always support you with that decision.”
“I am so glad to hear that sensei. Then can you tell me what University did you go back then?”
“It is PL University. But wait, are you planning to take an entrance exam next month to that school without even attending a cram school?”
“I will do my best!”
“Seriously?! You are kidding right?”
“No, I am not joking. I am absolutely serious. I will pass the entrance exam and attend the same university where you attended.”
“Fine, good luck with that but make sure to have two more alternate Universities as your backup in case you didn’t pass the exam.”
“Then can you tell me your other university choices back then?”
“Hey, why do I feel like you are only copying all my career form answers? No cheating okay? Just search in your phone whatever the university that will take your interest.” I finish smoking the stick of cigarette at the same time. “Remember to pass that fully answered paper back to me before this day ends. Eat your lunch first then go back to your classroom.”
I walk back to the office and saw Sakaguchi-san finally back to her seat while eating her lunch.
“How’s your counselling sessions?” I asked her.
“Well I am finally done with everyone. How about you?”
“I am also done with my part.”
“Thanks again for helping me out. Here take this as advance treat to you.” She put a bento box on my table.
“Oh hey Sakaguchi-san, Arakata-san are you two dating?” One of our colleagues who happen to see us suddenly called out.
“Yeah, I’ve been wondering about that too. Yesterday I saw Arakata-san carrying a bag full of cakes and now Sakaguchi-san is giving him a special bento.” Another one added.
“Tell us now. How’s your relationship going?” Almost everyone in the office turn their heads towards us waiting for our response.
“Y-ou are all wrong! Ahh why would you all think about that?” Sakaguchi-san immediately stands up and denies everything about us.
“Really? But haven’t you told me the other day that you have a crush on-“
“No please stop! Everyone please stop making up assumptions.” She immediately cut off her friend from finishing what she has to say by almost screaming and telling everyone to stop.
Am I really not that attractive to be denied like this so harshly? *sigh* Well I am not also fond of having rumors about me going around like thisbso I also need to stand up and explain my side.
“Everyone listen up! I am just helping her out with her works and I am dating anybody right now. That’s all. Stop spreading fake rumors before it reach the students. Try to act as adults once and for all.” I sounded more annoyed than I actually plan to and so everyone turns so quite in a blink of an eye.
The atmosphere feels a little awkward and so I decided to leave the office for a while. I grabbed the bento that Sakaguchi-san gave and then walk down to the school cafeteria to eat my lunch. The place is not crowded anymore and the only people I can see roaming around are some brats who are buying extra snacks. The tables are also empty and that is when I spotted Miyoshi-kun sitting alone.
“Hey, can I join you here?” I asked him as he busily nibbled to his sandwich.
“Yes.”
“Are you done answering the career form?”
“Yes, I am actually planning to hand it over to you in the office after I eat here.”
“Then you can just give it to me now if you want.”
“No, I will just wait for you to finish first.”
“Okay, if that is what you want.” I started eating while he is finishing up his sandwich.
“By the way sensei, is it true that your birthday is coming soon? I heard from your class that they are planning a surprise for you.”
“A surprise? Aren’t you suppose to keep that as a secret from me? You have successfully ruined their plan.”
“Oh, I didn’t mean to spoil you about that. I just what to know if it is really your birthday soon.”
“My birthday is September 19, just a few days away from now. I never tell this to any of my students but maybe they asked another teacher about it so it got leaked.”
“Do you have anything planned for that day?” his voice gets softer and softer as if he is just whispering it to me.
“Why? Do you have another extra ticket to somewhere for that day?” I just wanted to tease him a little but it turns out that maybe I guess a little of what h is planning to ask because his face suddenly turns red.
“No, it is not like that. I just wanted to know if ¬¬— if you have anyone to celebrate that day with you.” His words keep stumbling down.
“I usually celebrate it with my friends or my brother but I think this year I will have to celebrate it on my own.”
“Then! Then can I?”
“What?”
“Can I celebrate it with you alone?” He looks at me with his glimmering eyes and it makes my heart skip a beat.
“I—I will think about it.” I avoided his pleading eyes to stop myself from making rash decision.
“Then can I get your answer tonight? I will be waiting for your call.”
“What?! You wanted me to call you just for that?”
“Then just answer me right now.”
“I actually have no plan to celebrate at all.”
“How about a drink?”
“Drink? Aren’t you underage to drink?”
“I am already 18 years old sensei.”
“But it will be bad if anyone see me drinking with one of my students.”
“Then let’s drink in your place.”
“Absolutely not going to happen.”
“Why? Nobody will see us even if we got drunk and make a mess inside your place.”
“I swear to myself never to get drunk because the last time I did it, I ruined my long term relationship with my bestfriend.”
“Then you don’t have to drink that much, I will drink most of it and don’t worry because I have a very high tolerance when it comes to alcohol.”
“That is not something to be proud of and besides, why the heck are we talking about that here in the school grounds? Please behave and hand me over your career form then go back to your classroom, it is almost time for the afternoon class.”
I push him away before he can speak any further. I always wonder why I keep getting carried away by the flow of the conversation every time we are together. I am not very good at dealing with the brats but whenever I am dealing with Miyoshi-kun, it feels so different. A warm and fuzzy feeling keeps tingling within me and I cannot even stop myself from remembering his smile.
