Suzuki Kazuya’s POV
Bombarded by all the dramas and tragedy lingering between Yuki and I, the seasons still continues to move forward as if it teases me until it drives me to desperation and insanity.
Summer season ended without a care and now it is autumn. The scenery of the falling red leaves should have been amazing and can be a perfect subject to my new video project but with all the depressing thoughts I am having for a long time, it only makes me more feel melancholic.
Watching the leaves fall slowly to the ground and realizing that the tree will end up without anything but empty branches makes me tear up. What if Yuki’s life slips out just like the falling leaf from the branch? Can I still catch it and put it back to the branch where it falls off?
After the incident that happened during the time we went from the amusement park, it was a great shock to see that his probability of dying went down drastically into 22% and since then, I always keep in check the percentages and whenever it goes up, I am ready to run at full speed to his side to save him from whatever danger that will try to take him away from me.
“Everyone listen up! Just like what happened last year, the university will be celebrating its annual autumn festival and it is expected that our department will go all out with our exhibit again.” Professor Asuma said as soon as he enters the room. “For this year’s exhibit there will be no video presentations because of the ongoing construction in our audio visual room so instead, our department will mainly focus on photography and paintings.”
“So are we exempted with the exhibit? We are major in cinematography so our video projects will not be in use right?” one of the students sitting in the front row asked.
“You are wrong with that. That is not an excuse for you to be exempted. You all have your own camera and skills so I am asking everyone to submit an entry of their set of photographs to me by tomorrow, Friday afternoon. You can choose whatever theme you will use as a subject so feel free. Anyone who fails to submit anything to me will be given a failing score on their project this semester and whoever’s photos gets picked up and become part of the exhibit will be granted a special exemption from their final exam so don’t take this lightly.”
The professor left us after the announcement to let us have the free time to start with his sudden project assignment. The people inside the lecture hall shows different reaction, those who are also interested in photography gets all excited and run off to start their photo shoot with their desired theme in mind. On the other hand, there are also students who are not really interested to join the exhibit but got all scared of the consequence that they will get if they fail.
“Ahhh! What should I do? I can’t even think of an interesting theme.” A girl sitting in front of me complains to her friend.
“Don’t worry, I am also in panic right now.”
“If only professor Goto is still our professor instead of that old professor then we don’t have to care about projects like this without even lifting a finger.”
*sigh* I forgot that there are still students like them who are trash and loves to follow a lowlife scum like that man. The professor Goto they are talking about was the professor who got fired by the university after discovering multiple videos of him having sex with students inside one of the empty lecture hall saved in the confiscated phone of Hayaguchi Tanuma\, a senior whom I beat up last time. It was a pretty nice coincidence to give our university the chance remove two assholes and save the other students from being corrupted. I stand up and decided to leave the room to avoid getting stressed out while listening to more chatters and useless complaints going around.
I went to the school field to get some inspiration but there are lot of other students who are already out taking photos of the surroundings, some are even taking photos of each other like models. I guess our exhibit will be filled with photos with the autumn theme.
I walked around the building to be alone and luckily, I found a perfect spot to sit down under the red tree. Pulling out my camera from my backpack, I decided to view all the photos I have taken since I bought it.
The very first photo I saw was a picture of Natsu, my precious dog welcoming me in the front door of our home. I was so excited that time to use my newly bought camera and so I didn’t hesitate to take that shot as soon as I step in my home that time. After a few more photos of Natsu and me together during my first college holiday, the photos I keep taking were the changing scenery around me.
The close up photos of the cold and sharp icicles left in the tree branches while reflecting the faint brightness of the sunrise after a cruel snowstorm back in winter.
The beautiful and romantic vibe of the cherry blossoms blooming reflected clearly by the lake that almost turned pink because it is filled with all the fallen petals during spring.
The blinding brightness of the sunflower in full bloom in the fields from the county side we passed by during one my summer camp.
And the most recent photo of the park with its ground beautifully painted in red after being field with the fallen red autumn leaves that have fallen overnight.
All of these photos that I have taken out randomly every time I see something different seem to be more meaningful and worth keeping.
I continue browsing through my collections until I saw the most special photo I have taken and kept in a special folder, the scene of Yuki having fun in the sea side while collecting some shells and stones for me during our visit in our hometown. The surprised genuine smile on his face and the reflection of the sunset in his face were successfully captured by the photograph. A photo where the season is not clear and doesn’t even matter because all I can do is keep staring at him until I noticed the image of myself captured smiling like an idiot while holding a camera reflected into his eyes. I can never take any more photos better than this one; I wish I could print it on a large size and keep it to my room but it may be a little too much to really get a large photo of him printed from a store without asking Yuki’s permission first, well just forget it for now.
I selected the photos I decided to use as my impromptu project and decided to pass by a printing studio to get a hard copy in the afternoon on my home after the end of my last subject.
“Is this also one of the projects that you will submit as an entry for your department’s exhibit” the employee of the printing shop asked me while getting my files.
“Yes, but how did you know?”
“Actually, we have been busy printing photos from some students earlier before you arrived and I heard about their upcoming exhibit and so I assume that you are also one of them.”
“I see. Well, yes I am one of those students who need to submit some photos.”
“Then do you want to avail our envelope? You can just seal it and write down the title of your photos outside with your name.” She shows me a brown envelope with a white portion at the back which serves as a writing space.
Suddenly, I got a message from Yuki inviting me for a dinner date for tomorrow, Friday.
“Sure. Just put my printed photos and seal it already before giving it to me. I am actually in a hurry now.” I message back Yuki asking for the exact time and place so that I can prepare myself.
I keep exchanging messages while waiting for the printing and so I didn’t even have the time to check the photos before it got sealed inside the envelope. I just take it after paying and walk happily home.
The next day, I am too excited about my date that I almost forget some important things. I was daydreaming all day until I heard some students talking about their project when I am already on my way outside the gate.
Oh crap. I dig down through my bag to search for the envelope containing my project but it is nowhere to be found. I closed my eyes and tried to remember until I remember that I just put in my desk at home as soon as I get home yesterday. I looked at the time and realized that I only got 10 minutes before the deadline ends and so I take a deep breath before running at full speed going back to my place to get the envelope.
When I finally got the envelope and on my way back, there is only 4 minutes left and so I started praying while running at full speed back to the University.
*huff**huff**cough* No matter how fast I have ran\, I am still 3 minutes late when I reached the door of Professor Asuma. Oh God\, please at least grant me a little miracle. I closed my eyes and knock on the door wishing that the professor is still in there and is still willing to accept my late project.
*knock**knock*
“Come in” I heard the professor answers.
“Oh Suzuki-kun, why are you in a rush? There is still 1 hour left before the deadline, no need to run off like that.” Professor was inside his office already busy looking at the photos that the other students submitted.
“What? I thought the deadline is at five in the afternoon.”
“I think you didn’t see the announcement I posted in our class group chat earlier.”
I take out my phone and check if he is not joking but it was really posted in there earlier during, but because of my intense daydreaming, I didn’t even have a care of what is happening the whole day.
*sigh* Now I feel so embarrassed thinking how I run like a madman back and forth on the streets just a few minutes ago.
“Here.” I handed the envelope but he paused and shoves it back to me with a pen.
“I think you are forgetting something. Remember the two of the most important part of an artwork.”
“Oh, I’m sorry sir.” I realized that I didn’t even write the title or even my name and signature on it.
I write down the title I have thought of yesterday and then write down my name and signature because officially submitting it back to him.
“I am looking forward to see what you got here Suzuki-kun.” The professor smiles and put my envelope along with the other which is still sealed.
“Thank you sir. See you next week.” I finally got relaxed when I step out of the office and take another few breathes before collapsing down the floor.
I never thought that I am capable of running at that kind of speed in my whole life. *sigh* Well at least I discovered my limit when the day comes that I have to run to save Yuki.
*ting**ting* I got a new message from Yuki.
‘Where are you? Already done with school?’ he asks.
‘I’m on my way out of the campus. How about you’ I stand up and started making my way out.
‘I just got back to my place to change to my casual clothes, don’t want to pressure you while wearing my working clothes.’
‘I am fine with whatever you are wearing, as long as you won’t bring to anything super fancy again.’ I can’t help but smile while remembering our first date at that fancy restaurant.
‘Hahaha ok whatever. I will bring my car so I can pick you up at the park, see you.’
I smiled like an idiot looking forward to the idea of being picked up by my boyfriend. Ahh! I have to fix my face first or Yuki will just make fun of me and call me cherry boy again.
After a waiting for a few minutes in the park, Yuki and I finally meet and he excitedly ask me to go inside the car.
“By the way, you haven’t really told me where are we going today so can you tell me now? I’ve been more curious since it is rare for you to bring your car for a date.” I asked as soon as I got in.
“We are going to the town nearby. Today is their autumn festival and I think it will be fun.”
“So that is the reason why you wanted to go wearing casual clothes?”
“Well a part of it I guess. Isn’t it quite uncomfortable going into a crowded place wearing my formal clothes?”
“Hahaha, I guess I can imagine that very well.”
The sun is almost down when we reached into the festival area and it is already crowded. I waited for Yuki at one of the entrance while he parks his car but after that, I am surprised when he came back wearing a fox mask.
“Why are you wearing that?” I try to snatch the mask away from his face but he suddenly cover my face with another mask he is holding.
“Hey ,stop teasing me.” I remove the mask from my face and look at the mask he gave me and carefully analyzed what animal is it.
“It is a dog.” Yuki said while still wearing his mask.
“Really? But why a funny looking dog?”
“Because it reminds me of you.”
“Do you mean, I look like a dog?”
“Well, you are kind of cute and sometimes you act like a spoiled puppy so maybe you are really a dog, and a cherry one.”
“Ahhh you are teasing me again.”
“Hahaha, don’t be mad, I just felt like it is cute to have matching mask like this a souvenir.”
“I will treasure this mask forever even if it is not cute.” I hold into it tightly before putting it on the half of my face.
“Let’s go now and eat before the fireworks starts.” He unexpectedly grabbed my hand and walks through the crowd. Maybe this is another reason for him to buy the mask, it is to let us enjoy without restriction and fear of being judged.
We happily roam around the boots and enjoyed the night like two young teenagers just being happy with life.
“By the way, you are already familiar with our university’s annual autumn festival right?” I asked him while we are eating.
“Yeah, but I don’t really enjoy that because our department is almost not participating with it. Oh right, you are from the Art department right? Are you participating with the exhibit?”
“I don’t know yet-“ I stopped when my phone vibrated continuously.
I open it to check for any messages until I saw a lot of messages coming in to our class group chat.
‘Congratulations!’
‘Woah, I thought professor is just joking about the prize.’
‘huhu, I should have try harder.’
I scrolled up to the older messages until I saw the professor’s recent message.
‘After evaluating everyone’s project a while ago, I am proud to announce that I have chosen 10 excellent entries that will be part of our prestigious department exhibit. Here are their names and Congratulations.’ I read through the list of names until I saw mine halfway.
“Ahhhhh!!” I can’t even stop myself from making a sound.
“What’s wrong Kazuya?”
“Please go to our University next week. I want to show you my photographs. My project luckily got picked by our professor.”
“Really? I’m so happy for you. Congratulations!” he hugs me tightly and it feels so good having Yuki becomes so proud of me.
The festival ended happily with a fireworks show and it is already 10 pm when we got back to the city. Yuki drive me back to my home safely and full of happiness.
“Kazuya, goodnight.” He said before I can open the door of his car.
“Yes, goodnight too.” I kissed him while he was off guard and I can see how surprised he is. “See you at the University festival next week.” I walk out of his car and wave at him before entering my front door.
