The most anticipated Autumn Festival of PL University finally arrived after a busy preparation during the whole weekend. The exhibit was off limits to all students despite already announcing the list of students whose photographs were chosen just to ensure the element of surprise once the exhibit officially opens for everyone. I don’t even know where will be the exact location of my photos so it is kind of thrilling to look for it while Yuki and I are walking together inside the exhibit hall.
There are booths set up everywhere around the campus just like how it is done back in high school festivals and the only difference is that ours is more organized and prepared according to the students’ department and major. And just like what Yuki has mentioned, the science and medicine department is the most inactive because they have nothing much to contribute as a booth and so the students from their department are always in charge for safety and first aid in case that somebody gets hurt so they are all in standby, and it is really such a big sacrifice for them instead of having fun during the whole festival.
It is during lunch time when Yuki informed me that he is on the way to the university after working half day in his clinic. I waited for him at the entrance gate and was in the middle of deciding what to eat for lunch when he finally came while carrying two small paper bags.
“I bought some lunch from a restaurant on the way here. I believe that you also haven’t eaten your lunch right?” he gives me one of the bags he is carrying.
“Yes, I was thinking of asking you out for lunch but I guess you already got something for us to eat. Come on; let’s go find a peaceful spot to eat inside the campus.”
“Sure, I am getting excited walking around the campus during autumn.”
The whole campus is still full of students and visitors swarming at the food booths around the area and going to the cafeteria is also not an option and so, decided to go back to the hidden spot I just found the other day at the back of our school.
“Are you fine sitting down under this tree?” I asked Yuki again before sitting down because I can’t imagine him just around anything.
“Yes, of course. I’m used to it just like when I was studying here.”
“Really? Then where do you usually eat lunch? Do you eat at the cafeteria?”
“I only ate at that cafeteria during those times that I am really desperate for food, you know how awful some foods they served out there right, but during those days that Hisashi and I got time, we cook for ourselves and bring it although our dormitory is just around the corner.”
“Yes, I know. They are still serving those crappy foods for students. So where did you eat your packed lunch back then?”
“To the rooftop of Building C.”
“Really? Rooftops are already off limits to students now.”
“Oh that’s sad to hear. I thought that I can still have a chance to climb up there and reminisce the past.”
“By the way, I just remember seeing Koharu last weekend during the preparations of our department. Is he also taking an art course?”
“Yes, he is. And he just moved in the dormitory so he sometimes drops off my place whenever he needs something.”
“But why didn’t he just live in your place? Why does he have to live in a cramped dormitory?”
“It is what he wanted and besides, it is more fun living together with the person he likes isn’t it?”
“The person he likes?” I paused for a while until I imagine something I should not even try to imagine.
“I already have a hunch from the moment I saw Koharu and his friend but pretended not notice.”
“What? So you mean, he and that guy… do you think they are dating?”
“Well I am not sure for now but I think Koharu will eventually open up about it when he is ready so all we need to do now is wait and support them in the background.”
“Yeah, you are right. And I hope that things work out well for him so he can stop being grumpy towards me.”
“Hahaha, but it is fun seeing you two together like that.”
“Well not for me.”
We finish up eating our lunch while talking about random things until my most awaited time arrives. I lead the way towards the exhibit hall where my photos are displayed within.
There are much more crowd walking inside compared earlier this morning when I took a short peak at the entrance. We walk together and look at the different set of photos displayed on the wall almost dominated by the Red Autumn theme but as we walk further inside I felt something strange, I can feel some people looking at our direction or rather, they are all looking at Yuki who is walking by my side.
“Hey Kazuya, is there something wrong on my face? I think people keep looking at me since we walked in here.” Yuki nervously take short glances to the left and to the right as whispers to me.
“No, you are looking good today as usual so you don’t have to worry.” I said to him although I am more nervous than him while still wondering if I did something that will make Yuki catch so much attention.
“Hey, isn’t that the guy? He is more handsome in person.” I suddenly overheard some girls talking to each other as we pass by their direction.
We walk faster trying to avoid everyone who is looking until we encountered a larger crowd gathered in front of one of the exhibit’s photos that I cannot see. I recognize one of my seatmates among the crowd and hesitantly ask him what is going on.
“Hey, uhhm can I ask what is happening here? Why do all of you so focused only on that spot?” I pointed at the front direction.
“Oh hey! You are that Suzuki Kazuya right?” he said after looking at my face for a second and I didn’t expect that anyone will even recognize me.
“Ah yes I am but why do you have to ask that?”
“Then you are the owner of those photographs right? Congratulations for winning the first place!”
“Huh? What? What do you mean?” I am really getting confused because I don’t even have the confidence to win any contest with just those photos of nature that I submitted and so I decided to go through the large crowd while letting Yuki stay at the corner first so that I can see what is really happening in the front.
“What the heck is this?!’’ I accidentally blurted out when I finally saw my photos on display.
Everyone was surprised by my sudden reaction and so the crowd slowly dispersed until Yuki can finally walk forward and stand beside me.
“Ah! Wait Yuki, let me explain.” My face is turning red as I watch Yuki stare at the set of 5 photos that are on display. “These photos were supposed to be only four photos but I think the printing shop staff accidentally printed that photo and it was my fault for being careless and didn’t check the contents of my envelope before submitting it. I am very sorry!” I am trying my best to block his view but it is possible considering how large the photo in the middle was.
“Now I know why they are staring at me.” He muttered as he still stares at the photo and I can’t even read what is going on inside his mind right now.
“I didn’t mean to do this without asking you first and I am very sorry.”
I look back again at the large photo of Yuki by the sunset with the four smaller photos of what is supposed to be my only photo entry placed around it.
“Kazuya-“ he called out to me and I nervously cut him off.
“Yes, what is it?” I slowly turn my head towards him to check if he is mad.
“It’s beautiful. No- I mean not my face but the whole photo. I didn’t look at it thoroughly when you have taken it that time but now that I have seen, I’m happy that I have become part of that beautiful moment.”
“No you’ve got something wrong, it won’t be considered a beautiful moment if you were not there. That photo will never be the same if I have taken it without you staring at back at me through the camera.”
“You are really making me embarrassed right now.” I watch as his face turns red at he looks at me.
“Do you want to know why I name that set of photos like that?” I can’t help but smile as I touch the metal nameplate attached below the display.
“Yes, I wonder why you use ‘My Undefined Season’ as the title of that piece.”
“Because no matter what season pass by in my life, nothing can replace those times when we are together. Every time that I am with you, the definition of seasons doesn’t concern me. The exceptional beauty of the cold winter, the lively sweetness of the blooming spring, the tender warmth of the youthful summer and the gentleness of the bright autumn, all of it reminds me of you ; my undefined season.” I cannot stop myself from talking while presenting him each of the photos before pointing back to his large portrait.
“Ah geez, there are really times that I thought you are really older than me when you started being sentimental like this, hahaha.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get so sentimental here.”
“It’s okay. By the way, where will be these photos going after the exhibit?”
“I don’t know.”
“Aren’t you going to get it and bring it to your place?”
“What?” I am still in daze until I realize what he is implying. “Is it really okay for me to display your photo at my place? Can I take your words just now as permission?”
“Well, I guess there is no problem with me. It is way better than not knowing where my photo be going after this event.”
“Then I will ask the professors later if I can take it as soon as the exhibit is over.”
“Hey, you are getting too excited with this, hahaha.”
We started walking through the hallway until we reached a spot where there are no other people roaming around.
“I kind of dreamed printing that photo and put it into my home as a display but I am too shy to go to a printing shop and print it myself so this is one in a million chance out of a fortunate mistake.”
“Good for you. I’m looking forward in visiting your place and seeing my photo on display, hahaha. On the other hand, why don’t you also give me a picture of yourself so that I can also put in on my place?”
“No, a photo with my face cannot even compare to yours and it will be somehow embarrassing if Koharu visits you and starts laughing at my photo. He might even jokingly light up an incense in front of it pretending that it is my memorial photo.” I can clearly imagine how his little brother will make fun of me if ever he sees a big photo of me on display in his brother’s place.
“Then how about a photo of us together?”
“You mean like a wedding photo?” I absentmindedly answered him while looking at a large photo of a little kid happily holding a bunch of blue flowers.
“No, I mean a simple photo of us standing together. Maybe we can take a good photo in your yard later with the autumn leaves as the background.”
“Oh I see hahaha.” I feel so embarrassed suddenly talking about a wedding photo.
“But maybe someday we can truly have our wedding photo somewhere in another country.” He winks at me and it caught me by surprise. The way he acts these days keeps provoking me to kiss him and devour him from bottom to top.
“Yuki, can we do it tonight?”
“Do what?”
“The thing we failed to do for so long as lovers.”
“No, we can’t. Today is the first day of a busy week.”
“Then can we do it on Friday? How about the weekend?”
“Still a NO for me.”
“But why? The summer vacation already passed by but you pretended to forget it the whole time.”
“Not until we decided who will be the bottom and the top.”
“But I already told you I am a top.”
“No, I have never seen any cute puppy being a top.”
“Then let me show you how I can transform into a wild dog.”
“Ahahaha lower your voice you dumb puppy. Have you forgotten that we are still in your school?”
“Don’t worry, everyone already left and no one can hear us. So please? Let’s do it soon, please?” I tried my best to make the most adorable face he can’t resist every time.
“Why are you being so pushy now? Are you in heat little puppy?” he squished my cheeks as I pout harder.
“Maybe~. Why don’t we test it in our probabilities?”
“No, such trivial things are-“I covered his mouth with my index finger as I close my eyes.
Probabilities of Yuki being a bottom….
…
..
.
92%
“Fuhahahaha.” I burst out laughing after actually seeing a shining 92% in front of his face.
“Hey! did you actually asked that kind of thing in the probabilities?”
“Ahahaha, I’m sorry… hahaha. I’m really sorry but the probabilities have finally spoken. “
“What? What did you see?”
“92% Hahahahaha.”
“92% of what?” I can see that he is starting to get annoyed with my endless laughter.
“92% that you are a bottom.” I answered while trying to act serious for a second because I’m afraid that if I laugh again, he will start to pinch my cheek harder.
“Ah! You damn brat!” he actually sounded like Hisashi-san we he said those words.
“Oww ouch! Ouch!” He started pinching my cheeks harder than I thought even though I already stop laughing earlier.
“Let me see it myself.” He stops pinching but his fingers stayed holding my cheeks.
He closed his eyes for a second and he resumes pinching my cheeks as he open his eyes again while blushing.
“Why? Why! This is unfair, Ahhh!”
“Hey, what did you see? “ I struggle to speak as he keeps pinching my cheeks.
“You- you why do you even got the same percentage. Ahh this is so unfair!”
“You mean 92% probabilities that I can top you?”
“Ahhh! Stop talking about it.” He finally let go and dash out of the exhibit hall.
I stay still standing where he left me and I can still feel my cheeks throbbing with the aftermath of the pain his intense pinching. “Ah why do you have to be so cute even when you are angry like that?” I rub my cheeks with my hands as I started to walk and follow Yuki outside the place.
